Preliminary program
Core of this event
Endoscopic ultrasound (EUS) has evolved in recent years into a technique with a major
clinical impact in digestive and mediastinal diseases. In fact, EUS has represented a major
advance in the diagnosis and staging of several tumors, and can determine a change in
diagnosis and management in 25% to 50% of cases. However, EUS is not only useful
providing excellent images for detection and staging of several malignancies, it also
provides guidance for fine-needle aspiration of almost all lesions detected during a
standard procedure. However, several new techniques associated to EUS have being
developed over the last year, both diagnostic and therapeutic. Among them, EUS guided
elastography and contrast enhancement, and EUS-guided biopsy. These techniques are
becoming essential in clinical routine. EUS-guided therapy is also increasing in terms of
new indications, mainly related to the new devices available. In this setting there is a need
for increasing the knowledge in these fields.
The Department of Gastroenterology and Hepatology of the University Hospital of
Santiago de Compostela, Spain, is a reference center for diagnostic and therapeutic
endoscopic ultrasound. In addition, this Department is an international reference center for
research and teaching in this technique.
In this setting, we have taken the opportunity to organize this EUS Live @ Santiago de
Compostela. Together with our excellent and distinguished faculty, consisting of some of
the world leading experts in the field of endoscopic ultrasound, we intend to bring those
latest developments and technologies related to EUS, defining the role of this technique in
several indications. The core elements of this course are the live demonstrations. We will
show the pivotal and practical role of EUS in the management of several diseases. During
the course we will also have the opportunity to evaluate and discuss from a more
theoretical point of view (based on different states of the art lectures and round tables for
discussion), the advances and actual position of EUS.
