Welcome to Sacred Heart Catholic Church
Our Site of Faith with Fr. Ben
August 2, 2015
Nuestro Enfoque de la Fe con Padre Ben
On the Spiritual Life (IV)
“All you who are thirsty come to the water” (Isaiah 55:1)
Beloved brothers and sisters, as we continue to exercise our
spiritual muscles through our daily prayers, celebration of the
Holy Mass, adoration of the Blessed Sacrament, spiritual and
corporal works of mercy as seen in our serving of the Lord
through helping our brothers and sisters, we are at the same time
satisfying our ultimate desire to experience the peace and joy of
the Lord. Thus, we, like the saints, thirst for ways to pray, ways
to hear and be heard by our loving God. This thirst
is satisfied by the Sacred Scripture as man
devoutly retains the desire for the one who calls
him into existence (Catechism of the Catholic
Church, 2560).
Reading the bible everyday and following the
spiritual life of the many men and women in the
Sacred Scriptures can uplift our spiritual profile
and offer us the basic rudiments we need for a
healthy prayer life: attitudes toward ourselves and
God that enable us to enter into relationship. In the
Sacred Scripture, a better image of God is revealed to us and we
can approach the living God with greater sense of humility as
seen in the lives of our beloved men and women of prayer who
wholeheartedly sought the Lord (Psalm 42). For example, in
Abraham, we learn to trust God as we call upon His holy name
(Genesis 12:1-4). In Jacob, we learn to ask God to bless us
irrespective of our shortcomings (Genesis 32:26), in David, we
are not afraid to ask God for forgiveness (Psalm 50), in Ruth, we
profess our fidelity and our willingness not to extricate ourselves
from God (Ruth 1: 16-18). In Isaiah, we recognize that our
limitations can be taken care of when we approach the throne of
grace (Isaiah 6: 1-3). In prophet Jeremiah, we become partakers
of the New Covenant (Jeremiah 31: 31-34).
Jesus is also thirsting for our holiness and wholeness as seen
when the Blessed Lord cried out from the cross “I thirst” (John
19: 28). To satisfy this thirst for God and for authentic spiritual
life, there are certain helps that could be effectively employed:
(i) Monthly Confession (ii) Weekly Eucharist (Sunday Mass)
(iii) A Morning Offering- St. Philip Neri as model “O God,
watch over your Philip today, because if you do not, your Philip
will betray you before the day is over” (iv) The recitation of the
Holy Rosary and the Chaplet of Divine Mercy (v) Fasting
according to the teachings of the Church on Friday (vi) The
daily examination of conscience (vii) Getting into the habit of
saying short aspiration prayers throughout the day: “Jesus I love
you,” Most Sacred Heart of Jesus, Have mercy on me,” Mary,
pray for me” (viii) Meditation on the daily Mass reading. (ix)
Using of Sacramentals: medals, scapulars, etc. (x) Living an
intensive spiritual life: going for a retreat, weekend spiritual
exercises, Cursillo of Christianity, Marriage Enrichment/
Encounter Weekends, Acts Retreat, Life in the Spirit Seminar,
Days of Prayer for ministries, Parish Mission, etc. (xi) Reading
the Bible, Lives of the Saints, Catechism of the Catholic Church,
Pope’s Encyclicals, Pastoral Letters from our Bishops, Reading
our Weekly Bulletin, and visiting the Church Website, etc.
Have a Graceful Week!!!
(i) Confesión mensual (ii) Eucaristía semanal (Misa dominical) (iii)
Sacramentales: medallas, escapularios, etc.

serve God’s people. He left his home, family and friends to

God has given to all of us.
Thank You Fr. Ben for saying “Yes” twenty years ago

Introducing the Neighborhood Communities
“I prefer a church which is bruised, hurting and dirty because it has been out on the streets, rather than a church which is
unhealthy from being confined and from clinging to its own security. I do not want a church concerned with being at the center and
then ends up by being caught up in a web of obsessions and procedures."
Pope Francis
I
n response to the spirit-filled sentiments of Pope Francis
and the vision of our Bishop to fill peoples lives with
hope (Diocesan Impact Statement) the prayerful decision was
made to take the Gospel message to the neighborhoods of
our parish and beyond the confines of our parish boundaries.
Our fourteen neighborhoods will be under the patronage of
two saints whose intercessions will be constantly invoked for
the well being of the people and the city. Our outreach in
the neighborhoods will begin Wednesday, August 5th. Every
Wednesday evening at 7:00 PM we will be celebrating a
Mass in one of the Neighborhood Communities.
Which Neighborhood Community do you belong to? Watch

Community hosts the weekly Wednesday Mass! Join us as we
