Dear Parishioners;
Well the rectory at St. Michaels’ is getting quite full. In
the next week or so we will be welcoming Fr. Mario
Genaro Isla Chavez, CSSR, from Bolivia. He will be
ministering to our Latino Community as well as studying
English and working on his doctoral dissertation (he’ll be
a busy man!). Fr. Mario will be sharing the Spanish Mass
with Fr. Haig who has been so very faithful to us these
past few months. Fr. Mario will also be able to help with
other needs of our Spanish-speaking community.
Fr. Daniel Varayoud is still receiving treatments for his
cancer. His latest scans are very positive, but he is not
yet ready to resume ministry duties. He will continue to
live at the rectory until he is strong enough to do so, and
then will probably be transferred to another parish that
needs help with its Latino community.
Meanwhile, I have adopted a cat. She’s a 2-year old
Russian Blue who was dropped off at a Humane Society
shelter when she was pregnant with 5 kittens. Her
kittens have been weaned and adopted, and she was
looking for a loving home for herself. We met at the
shelter, and she just captured my heart. She is a petite,
loving and energetic little girl. She has taken over my
rooms at the rectory and made herself right at home. I
am smitten.
Meanwhile, we move into the month of October which is
the Month of the Holy Rosary, Respect Life Month and
Breast Cancer Awareness Month. All of which are very
important for us to keep in mind. So perhaps we could
consider offering the prayers of our rosaries this month
and ask the Blessed Mother to intercede for our world to
bring healing to so many who struggle with cancer and
so many who have been hurt by the tragedy of abortion,
or whose lives are threatened by hunger, poverty and
violence. Mary, Queen of the Rosary, pray for us!
Peace,
Fr. Chuck

PASTORAL COUNCIL CORNER
St. Michael’s Hall of Honor
Last year at the Centennial celebration, we inducted five individuals
into the newly formed Hall of Honor. They were honored at the
Centennial Banquet and their names were placed on a plaque which
hangs in the vestibule of the church. Once again this year, the
Pastoral Council will accepting nominations for those you feel are
deserving of the honor. They will be recognized in some way as well
as having their names added to the plaque. There is a nomination
form included in the bulletin and describes the criteria. Please
complete the form for your nominee and return it to the parish
office in an envelope marked Hall of Honor / Pastoral Council. Or, email your nomination to Jeff Breighner, the Pastoral Council Chair
(jbreighner@simpl;exgrinnell.com). Nominations are due by
November 15th. The announcement of this year’s inductees will take
place in the first week of December.
Community Life
Welcome to St. Michael’s! If you are visiting with us this
weekend, or have been away from the Church for a while, we invite
you to become an active part of our parish community. Registration
forms may be found in the bulletin racks. Please fill one out and
return it to the Parish Office or drop it in the collection basket. We
encourage all to share fully in the life of the parish by being actively
involved in our ministries and being faithful stewards of time, talent
and treasure. Please prayerfully consider how God is calling you to
proclaim the Good News in our parish community. If you have a
change of address or phone number or are moving out of the
parish, please notify the Parish Office as soon as possible. Also,
when adult children turn 18, they should register under their own
names as soon as possible. If you are not Roman Catholic, please
know that you are most welcome. While we are unable to extend an
invitation to our non-Catholic brothers and sisters to receive Holy
Communion, please feel free to come forward at Communion time
and ask for a blessing.
Bienvenidos a San Miguel!
