previsiones fueron anunciadas en la World Travel Market de
Londres donde la isla estuvo bien representada. Los funcionarios de Fuerteventura
aprovecharon la oportunidad para reunirse con los principales responsables de
la industria del turismo británico. Con incrementos confirmados en el número de
conexiones y una mayor frecuencia de vuelos, no sólo desde el Reino Unido,
sino también desde Irlanda, ello es una importante noticia para las perspectivas
económicas de Fuerteventura. En el interior nos fijamos con más detalle en las

uerteventura´s tourism industry has received a
major boost for the year ahead, with news that the
British market is expected to grow by 28%. This
announcement was made in conjunction with the
island’s representation at the annual World Travel Market in London. Here
Fuerteventura’s officials took the opportunity to meet with major players
from the British tourism industry. With confirmed increases in the number
of connections and frequency of flights, not only from the UK but Ireland
as well, this is stunning news for Fuerteventura´s economic prospects.
Inside we look in more detail at the key meetings to take place and how
this core market is expected to grow in 2015.

ienvenidos a nuestra penúltima edición de 2014! Con el final del

año casi aquí, pronto llegará Navidad una vez más. Ciertamente
parece que el año ha pasado volando y no es casualidad que este
sentimiento coincida con un año muy ocupado para Fuerteventura.
Aún así en el blanco de romper todas las cifras turísticas de la historia,
el número de personas llegadas a la isla es bastante notable. Noticias
de la World Travel Market de Londres sugieren que esta tendencia continuará en 2015,
previéndose un aumento del 28% en los visitantes procedentes desde el Reino Unido.
La estrategia de marketing en el último par de años ha mejorado mucho y estamos
empezando a ver los resultados de estos esfuerzos. Con el tiempo ello se manifestará
en forma de un aumento en los ingresos para las empresas locales, beneficiando así a
toda la economía ya que las empresas reinvierten y contratan personal adicional.

limitaciones de tiempo, ha sido el festival de música Womad celebrado en Gran Tarajal.
Esta es una gran atracción en las Canarias y fue gratificante que Fuerteventura fuese
invitada como sede del evento. Fue un gran éxito, donde tanto los artistas como los
espectadores pudieron disfrutar de un ambiente especial. Con suerte ello motiva a los
organizadores a optar por celebrar el evento del próximo año aquí, con la esperanza de
que pueda convertirse en un evento del calendario cultural de la isla.

preocupación es la profundidad de los agujeros a perforar y, si hubiese un derrame, los
efectos que esto tendría en nuestra industria turística. Incluso, el tema se planteó en la
World Travel Market, lo que sugiere que el ministro de Energía para España haría bien
en escuchar. Tal vez, también el Gobierno tan lejano en Madrid debería reflexionar
sobre la próxima fiesta nacional, que conmemora la aprobación de la Constitución
Española. Al negar a los residentes un referéndum en relación con el tema, se podría
argumentar que está negando a los isleños los mismos consagrados derechos de la

2014. With the end of the
year drawing ever closer,
it won´t be long before Christmas is upon us once
again. Certainly it seems to have flown by and it is no coincidence that this feeling
has coincided with a very busy year for the Fuerteventura. Still on target to break
all time tourist figures, the number of people out and about is definitely noticeable.
News from the World Travel Market in London suggests this trend will continue into
2015, with an expected 28% increase in visitors from the UK alone. The island´s
marketing strategy over the last couple of years has vastly improved and we are
beginning to see the results of these efforts. In time this will manifest itself in the
form of increased revenues for local businesses, benefitting the entire economy as
companies reinvest and employ additional staff.
ll in all, it is fair to say there has been a lot happening around the island during A
the last month. One event of particular note, which did not receive its own
feature due to time constraints, was the Womad music festival held in Gran Tarajal.
This is a big draw within the Canaries and it was gratifying to see Fuerteventura
invited to host the event. By all accounts it was a huge success, with performers
and spectators alike enjoying what was a special atmosphere. With luck this will
motivate the organisers to choose us to host next year’s event, with the hope it can
become a regular part of the island’s cultural calendar.

tradition every year. With many children (and adults!) dressing up for the occasion,
it made for quite a night! In what has become a Fuertextra tradition, we’ve a sample
of the fun in our photo round-up, to give a glimpse of the ghoulish action.
lsewhere in this edition, we take a detailed look at the latest Repsol situation, as

the company move ever closer to commencing their exploration project in our
coastal waters. It is without doubt an extremely emotive subject, with most people
holding a view on the issue. Of particular concern is the depths of the holes to be
drilled and, should there be a spill, the effects this will have on our tourism industry.
The subject was even raised at the World Travel Market, suggesting that Spain´s
energy minister would do well to listen. Perhaps also the Government sitting afar in
Madrid should reflect on the forthcoming national holiday, due to mark the adoption
of the Spanish Constitution. In denying residents a referendum in relation to this
issue, it could be argued they are denying islanders the very rights enshrined within
the Constitution itself. Enjoy the read!

oportunidad única en el comercio mundial de viajes para
reuniones, establecer contactos, y realizar negociaciones. Ciertamente
parece que la delegación de Fuerteventura aprovechó el evento de tres días,
acordando una serie de convenios. El resultado neto de la actividad ha sido el
anuncio que predice una expansión del 28% en el mercado británico de cara
al próximo año.

he recent World Travel Market held in London at the
beginning of November is one of the most important fairs
within the industry. Marketing itself as the “leading global event
for the travel industry”, it provides a unique opportunity for the
global travel trade to meet, network, negotiate and conduct
business. It would certainly seem that Fuerteventura’s delegation took full
advantage of the three day event, with a number of deals agreed. The net
result of this activity is the bullish announcement predicting a 28% expansion
in the British market next year.
O
ne key meeting that was to take place
was with Jet2, which only started
operations with the island this year. They
have been so delighted with the uptake on
their existing routes, that they were able to
announce 66,300 seats to the island will
be offered in 2015. This is meteoric growth
in such a small timescale and equates
to an increase of 18% on their current
level. The airline has published their 2015
summer catalogue, listing 41 hotels across
the island, enabling the company to offer
package holidays and flight only deals.

Director for Jet2, to discuss
marketing initiatives and strategies,
taking the opportunity to present her
with a goat´s cheese!

na reunión importante que tendría lugar era con Jet2,
que ha comenzado a operar con la isla este año. Están
tan encantados con la incorporación de sus rutas, que han
anunciado ofrecer 66.300 plazas a la isla a lo largo del
2015. Este es un crecimiento meteórico a pequeña escala
de tiempo y equivale a un aumento del 18% en su nivel
actual. La aerolínea ha publicado su catálogo de verano
2015, y cuenta con 41 hoteles en toda la isla, lo que permite
a la compañía promover ofertas de vacaciones junto con la
venta de sólo asientos. Representantes de Fuerteventura
se reunieron con Janice Mather, directora de Marketing de
Jet2, para discutir las iniciativas de marketing y estrategias,
y además, ¡aprovechar la oportunidad de presentarle un

on British Airways a punto de empezar a volar
a la isla desde Londres Gatwick en diciembre,
los representantes se reunieron con ejecutivos de la
aerolínea. El vuelo inaugural a la isla será el día 13 de
diciembre, dicha aerolínea tendrá una frecuencia de
dos veces por semana. Los delegados aprovecharon
la ocasión para seguir adelante con los detalles de
promoción destinados a apoyar el lanzamiento, que
verá la línea de bandera nacional del Reino Unido
volar a Fuerteventura por primera vez.

visitors are expected to have travelled to Fuerteventura by the end of
the year. The summer was a huge success as the season finished with an
average occupation of 96%, the best for several years. With continued growth

DISPUTA DE PRESUPUESTO

l Partido Popular (PP) ha cuestionado la cantidad de dinero
que Fuerteventura va a recibir en los presupuestos
Canarios de 2015. La cantidad se ha
fijado en 36 millones de euros, lo que
el PP considera insuficiente. Águeda
Montelongo, diputada regional por el partido en
Fuerteventura, estaba decepcionada como,
en
su opinión, una vez más, “las necesidades
de
los majoreros no están en la agenda
del
Gobierno de Canarias y en Fuerteventura el
Cabildo
adopta una posición sumisa”. Ella puso
en duda
la cantidad de 38€ millones destinados a
Televisión
Canaria, son 2 millones más que lo asignado
en su conjunto
a Fuerteventura. La Señora Montelongo,
declaró: “Esta
es la verdadera prioridad de CC y PSOE: la
propaganda y el
autobombo.”

budgets. The amount has been
set at 36 million euros, which the PP party have
claimed is insufficient. Águeda Montelongo the
regional deputy for the party in Fuerteventura was
disappointed that in her opinion once again, “the
needs of the Fuerteventura population are not on
the agenda of the Canarian Government and the
Fuerteventura Cabildo has adopted a submissive
position.” She called into question the amount of
38 million euros set aside for Televisión Canaria,
the local television company, which is 2 million
more than the whole of Fuerteventura has been
allocated. Señora Montelongo, stated, “This is the
real priority of the CC and PSOE: (ruling Canarian
Government coalition parties) propaganda and
self-promotion.”

pérdida de 32 camas, parte de la nueva
urgencias y laboratorios. Una vez más,
la señora Montelongo fue muy franca en
sus opiniones, y agregó que ello es otra
decepción para los residentes que han
estado esperando 11 años para que el
hospital sea terminado. Cuando éste se
haya completado no dispondrá de los
servicios prometidos inicialmente y ello se
traducirá en una sola cama más que cuando
comenzaron las obras.

la playa del pueblo impracticable
durante todo el día debido a los
daños. Los bomberos tuvieron que
achicar agua y limpiar las zonas más
afectadas, como el paseo marítimo.
La gente en Lanzarote también
informó de una caída de granizo y fuertes lluvias, mientras que más al sur
de Fuerteventura, el sol brillaba evidenciando que el clima realmente es
imprevisible en Fuerteventura.

CHANGING
WEATHER
hilst it was a hot and sunny October, few would have predicted the

hail stones that were to fall at the beginning of November in the
north of the island! But hail stone it did, along with a torrential downpour!
Whilst it´s not the first time this type of weather has been experienced in
Fuerteventura, it is still a particularly rare sight, that left residents rushing
for their cameras to record the event. The stormy weather occurred on the
first Sunday in November and left the town´s beach unusable all day due
to damage. Fireman worked quickly to pump water out of flooded buildings
and clean up the
most affected areas,
such as the seafront
walkway. People
in Lanzarote also
reported hail stones
and heavy rains,
whilst further south in
Fuerteventura, the sun
was shining evidencing
the truly unpredictable

CAMPAÑA DE RECICLAJE
S
e ha puesto en marcha una campaña para tratar de educar a
la gente a reciclar correctamente sus residuos. La campaña,
bajo el lema, “Yo reciclo, Fuerteventura Sonríe” está diseñada
específicamente para educar a los escolares. En ella se describe
el valor del reciclaje y cómo deshacerse correctamente de
los residuos domésticos. Se dará una serie de charlas en centros
educativos de toda la isla, asimismo se harán visitas guiadas a la
planta de reciclaje principal en la isla, el Complejo Ambiental de
Zurita. Un monitor visitará las escuelas proporcionando información
y haciendo hincapié en la importancia de separar la basura a fin
de reciclar correctamente. Ello continuará con una visita a la planta
de reciclaje para ver el proceso posterior de primera mano. Los
estudiantes aprenderán en términos lo que ocurre con los residuos,
después de ser depositados adecuadamente en el contenedor de
reciclaje correspondiente.

campaign has been launched to try and help educate people to correctly recycle their waste. The campaign
using the slogan, “Yo reciclo! Fuerteventura sonríe” (I recycle!
Fuerteventura smiles) is specifically designed to educate school
children over the age of 10. It describes the value of recycling
and how to correctly dispose
of domestic waste. A series of
talks will be given in educational
centres across the island, as
well as guided trips to the main
recycling plant on the island, the
Complejo Ambiental de Zurita.
Officials will visit schools providing
information and stressing the
importance of separating rubbish
correctly for recycling. This will
then be followed up by a visit to
the recycling plant to view the
subsequent process at first hand.
This will educate the students into terms of what happens to
the waste, after it is correctly deposited in the right recycling
bin.

papel y cartón deben colocarse en los
contenedores de reciclaje azul; los envases
ligeros, como todo tipos de plástico, latas

en los contenedores de reciclaje amarillo;
todos los tipos de vidrio van en los
contenedores verdes. El año pasado los
residentes de Fuerteventura reciclaron 683
toneladas de residuos de plástico, 4.414
toneladas de papel y cartón y 3.180 toneladas de vidrio. Hubo un aumento en
el reciclaje llevado a cabo respecto a 2012, aunque las cifras de papel y cartón
mostraron una ligera disminución. Los interesados en organizar una excursión/

separated and what colour bins recycled goods can be
deposited in, here is a quick break down. Paper and card
should be placed in the blue recycle containers. Plastic, tetra
bricks, and cans should be placed in yellow recycle containers
and all types glass in the green bottle banks. Last year
residents in Fuerteventura recycled 683 tonnes of plastic waste, 4,414 tonnes
of paper and card and 3,180 tonnes of glass. This was an increase on the
recycling conducted in 2012, although the figures for paper and card showed

POSTAL STRIKE
os trabajadores de correos están planeando una huelga en la isla para el
27 de noviembre. La razón es su insatisfacción con respecto a los recortes
salariales y de personal en los últimos tres años,
así como las propuestas que la empresa planea
introducir. En total, más de 500 trabajadores han
perdido sus puestos de trabajo dentro de las
Islas Canarias y casi 8.000 en toda España en
los últimos años. Se cree que habrá protestas
regionales y nacionales, ya que los trabajadores
saldrán a las calles para expresar su descontento.
Bajo las nuevas medidas Correos quiere recortar
el número de empleados a 14.000 en los
próximos cinco años. Los sindicalistas reclaman
que los servicios estarán gravemente afectados si ello sucede. Y afirman que
los recortes ya implementados han dejado algunas zonas de las Islas Canarias
mal atendidas. Esto ha dado lugar a retrasos en los plazos de entrega, ya que
los trabajadores luchan para hacer frente a la demanda en los servicios.

Fuerteventura. Este mes hay noticias de una nueva conexión con Varsovia
en Polonia, con Smartwings operando la ruta todos los martes. Polonia es el
quinto mercado turístico más grande de la isla y está creciendo de manera
constante alrededor de un 11,5% anual. El vuelo sale de Varsovia a las 09.00
y llega a Fuerteventura a las 13.40. Después de una rápida
parada, sale de la isla a las 14.30 horas, llegando de nuevo a
Varsovia a las 21.00 horas.

NEW FLIGHTS
I
t seems that hardly a month goes by without the announcement of more
flights to Fuerteventura. This month there is news of a new connection with
Warsaw in Poland, with Smartwings operating the route every Tuesday. Poland
is the island’s fifth biggest tourist market and is growing steadily at around
11.5% annually. The flight leaves Warsaw at 09.00, arriving into Fuerteventura
at 13.40. After a swift turn around, it departs the
island at 14.30, arriving back in Warsaw at 21.00.

or otra parte, Bruselas y Paris han añadido conexiones
adicionales a la isla gracias a Jetair Fly. Esta aerolínea es
parte del Grupo TUI y operará un vuelo desde el aeropuerto
de París Orly todos los domingos. Hará una salida temprana
en la mañana desde Francia, ya que el vuelo está programado para
salir a las 06:30, llegando a Fuerteventura a 09.20. A continuación,
comenzará su viaje de regreso a las 10.15, llegando a París a
las 15.15 horas. Los vuelos están disponibles a través de www.
marmara.com y los precios de ida y vuelta se sitúan sobre los
300 euros. El vuelo desde Bruselas operará los miércoles y complementará el
vuelo existente de la línea aérea de los sábados. Saliendo de Bruselas a las

and will operate a flight from Paris Orly airport
every Sunday. It´s an early morning departure
from France, as the flight is scheduled to leave at
06.30, arriving into Fuerteventura at 09.20. It will
then commence its return journey at 10.15 and arrive
into Paris at 15.15. Flights are available via www.
marmara.com and return prices are around 300
euros. The Brussels flight will operate on Wednesdays and will supplement the
airline’s existing flight on Saturdays. Departing Brussels at 06.10, passengers
will arrive in Fuerteventura at 11.55, with the return flight departing at 12.15 and

FÓSIL DE UNA SERPIENTE
A
lguna vez en la historia, las serpientes
vagaron por el campo de Fuerteventura,
ya que se ha hallado un fósil de serpiente en
Caleta de Fuste. El descubrimiento se hizo hace
varios años, aunque sólo recientemente se ha
podido identificar como el fósil de una serpiente,
después de haber sido analizado por el Museo
Nacional de Historia en Londres. Ello ha llevado
a los expertos a cuestionarse qué hacía una
serpiente en Fuerteventura y si podría haber
sido parte del hábitat natural. Está generalmente
reconocido que muy pocas islas oceánicas
tienen serpientes en sus faunas naturales, pero
los expertos creen que hubo un tiempo en el que
podrían haber existido en la isla. La otra explicación
presentada ante el hallazgo, es que un ave la hubiese
cazado en otro lugar y transportado hasta aquí.

or otro lado, hace varios años se encontró un tubo
volcánico en la misma zona turística mientras se
realizaban trabajos de construcción, consistente en
una galería de unos 72 metros de largo y entre 0,8
a 2,50 metros de altura. Se encontraron restos de
aproximadamente 40 vértebras en el sedimento en el
suelo del tubo. Más tarde, éstas fueron identificadas
por los expertos como ratones, musarañas y especies
de pardela. Sin embargo, el fósil serpiente ha sido
más difícil de analizar y, en consecuencia, fue enviado
a Londres para realizar las pruebas científicas. Aquí,
Susan Evans, especialista en fósiles de reptiles, utiliza
un escáner TAC. De los resultados se pudo determinar
que el fósil realmente pertenece a una serpiente. La única
otra evidencia hasta ahora de que las serpientes pudiesen
deslizarse por los campos canarios se halla en Famara,
Lanzarote. Aquí se descubrió una familia de serpientes boas,
a pesar de que vivían en la isla hace más de seis millones de
años.

tra historia sobre la naturaleza que ha llamado la
atención este mes ha sido el primer avistamiento
de un Rodillo abisinio en las Islas Canarias. Este
pájaro pertenece a la familia rodillos de las aves, que
se reproducen en África tropical, en un cinturón al sur
del Sahara conocido como el Sahel. El avistamiento
ocurrió en el barranco de La Torre en Fuerteventura.
Este barranco se encuentra a las afueras de Las
Salinas, cerca de la localidad turística de Caleta
de Fuste, y es un refugio bien conocido para los
amantes de las aves. Este avistamiento ha dejado
a los expertos desconcertados, ya que esta ave en
particular no migra fuera de África. En general, se
sabe que son migrantes de corta distancia, que se
mueven más hacia el sur después de la temporada
de lluvias. Mide unos 28-30cm de altura y su espalda
es de color marrón, siendo el resto de su plumaje
principalmente azul. Los adultos tienen colas largas
en serpentinas que pueden medir hasta 12 cm. Está
pensado que el ave debe haber perdido el rumbo,
mientras migraba, llegando aquí gracias a los fuertes
vientos.

FUERTE SNAKES
S
nakes may well have once roamed
the Fuerteventura countryside, as the
fossilised remains of a snake have been
found in Caleta de Fuste. The discovery
was made several years ago, but the fossil
has only recently been identified as a
snake, having been tested by the National
History Museum in London. This has led
experts to question what a snake was
doing in Fuerteventura in the first place and
whether they could have been part of the
natural habitat. It´s generally recognised
that very few ocean islands have snakes
in their natural faunas, but experts believe
once upon a time they could have existed on the
island. The other explanation put forward for the
find, is that a bird of prey may have caught the
snake elsewhere and transported it here.
A
volcanic tube was found during building works in the tourist resort several years ago,
consisting of a gallery roughly 72 metres long and
between 0.8 to 2.50 metres high. The remains
of approximately 40 vertebrae were found in
sediment on the floor of the tube. They were
later identified by experts to be mice, shrews and
shearwater species. However, the snake fossil was
more difficult to analyse and was consequently
sent to London for scientific testing. Here, Susan
Evans, a specialist in reptile fossils, used a TAC
scanner. From the results she was able to determine the
fossil was indeed a snake. The only other evidence until
now that snakes may once have slithered through the
Canarian countryside was found at Famara in Lanzarote.
Here a family of boa snakes were discovered, although
they lived on the island more than six million years ago.
FIRST EVER SIGHTING
A
nother nature story which caught the eye
this month was the first ever sighting of an
Abyssinian roller in the Canary Islands. This
particular bird is a member of the roller family
of birds, which breeds across tropical Africa in
a belt south of the Sahara known as the Sahel.
The sighting was made at the La Torre Barranco
in Fuerteventura. This particular ravine is
located on the outskirts of Las Salinas, near the
touristic resort of Caleta de Fuste, and is a well
known haven for bird enthusiasts. It´s sighting
has left experts bemused, as this particular bird
does not migrate outside of Africa. Generally,
they are known to be short distance migrants,
which move further south after the wet season.
Measuring 28-30cm in height, the bird has
a distinctive brown back with the rest of its
plumage mainly blue. Adults have long tail
streamers which can measure up to 12cm. It´s
thought the bird must have lost its way whilst
migrating and arrived here on the back of strong
winds.

en febrero. Mientras deseaban poder utilizar las carreteras de las islas para
practicar de forma similar a sus entrenamientos en Mallorca, no tenían permiso
para ello. Esto aseguró que los conductores se salvasen de tener que conducir
evitándolos. Sin embargo, a menudo pudieron verse por el carril bici entre Las
Playitas y Gran Tarajal.

SKIING IN THE SUN
A
rare phenomenon has been seen in Fuerteventura in recent weeks. Swedish skiers have been spotted practicing their sport up and down hills
in the south of the island! But these are not traditional piste skiers, who require
snow, but rather those practicing roller-ski. Sixteen youngsters, all under-23
and part of the Olympic Swedish team, spent eight days practicing for the
upcoming season. The main focus of this is to be the world championships,
due to be held in Sweden in February. Whilst keen to use the island´s roads
in similar fashion to when training in Mallorca, skiers were prohibited from
so doing. This ensured drivers were spared from having to slalom their way
around them! However, they could often be seen using the cycle track from Las
Playitas to Gran Tarajal.
or those unsure as to what roller skiing is, it can best be defined as a nonsnow equivalent to cross country skiing. Roller skis are used on tarmac
to emulate winter skis, with wheels at the end of the ski. The techniques are
very similar to those used in cross country skiing on snow. The sport has
grown steadily in popularity since the 1930s. It was first created as a summer
training alternative in Italy, but grew into a competitive sport in its own right. The
majority of national cross country ski teams around the world engage in roller
ski during the off season, for specific physical training simulating winter skiing.

l 27º Festival Internacional de
Cometas fue un gran éxito, contando
con la asistencia de entusiastas de la
cometa procedentes de lugares tan
lejanos como Rusia. El evento comenzó
en El Cotillo con una exhibición de
cometas estáticas y acrobáticas en
la Playa del Burro. Posteriormente,
se trasladó a su ubicación tradicional
durante el fin de semana en las dunas de
Corralejo. La atracción atrajo a cientos
de visitantes y el cielo se transformó en
una multitud de cometas de diferentes
colores, formas y tamaños. El evento se
celebra anualmente desde 1987, cuando
un dedicado grupo de aficionados
de las cometas decidió celebrar una
fiesta dedicada a su pasatiempo.
Desde entonces, ha crecido de manera
constante hasta convertirse en el
increíble espectáculo de hoy en día.

n telescopio recién instalado en Tenerife ha comenzado una búsqueda
internacional de planetas cercanos que puedan albergar vida. El Observatorio
del Teide en Tenerife ha puesto en marcha el primer telescopio destinado a formar
parte del programa de astronomía danés SONG. El objetivo de ello es buscar en
la Vía Láctea planetas similares a la Tierra. El plan a largo plazo es la existencia
de ocho telescopios en todo el mundo que formen una red diseñada para
mejorar la comprensión de las estrellas y los sistemas planetarios. A un metro
de diámetro, el telescopio es más pequeño que muchos de sus compañeros.
También lo es su costo, invirtiéndose 4 millones de euros en su construcción, una
cantidad relativamente pequeña en términos astronómicos.

Festival was a huge success,
as kite enthusiasts from as far
afield as Russia attended the
event. The event started in El
Cotillo with an exhibition of static
and acrobatic kites on the Playa

by a multitude of kites in different
colours, shapes and sizes. The

newly installed telescope, located in Tenerife, has started an international search for nearby planets which may support life. The Teide Observatory
in Tenerife launched the first telescope to be used as part of the Danish led
SONG astronomy programme. The objective of this is to scour the Milky Way
in search of earth-like planets. The long term plan is for eight telescopes to
be located around the world, which will form a network designed to improve
understanding of stars and planetary systems. At one metre in diameter, the
telescope is smaller than many of its peers. So too is its cost, which at 4 million
euros to build, is a relatively small amount in astronomic terms.

ébola. Los inmigrantes llegaron durante la mañana,
al entrar la patera en una playa de Maspalomas. Allí
permanecieron durante el resto del día, bajo el sol,
mientras se decidía qué hacer con ellos. Las apuestas
se suscitaron cuando las autoridades se enteraron de
que algunos del grupo de 23 personas procedían de
Sierra Leona y Guinea. Cuando afirmaron haber padecido síntomas asociados
con el ébola, dado que sus países de origen se encuentran entre las naciones
más afectadas, saltó la alarma.

boat to a beach in Gran Canaria has received
international media condemnation. Widespread
Criticism has been levied at the way in which the
situation was handled by authorities,
amid fears members of the group
may have had Ebola. The immigrants
arrived during the morning, their
vessel landing at a busy Maspalomas
beach. There they remained for the
rest of the day, under the baking sun,
whilst it was decided what to do with
them. The stakes were raised when
officials learned that some of the 23
people were citizens of Sierra Leone
and Guinea. When they claimed to be experiencing symptoms associated with
Ebola, which given their home countries are among the worst affected nations,
the alarm was raised.

and a quarantine area established. When Red Cross workers reached the
scene they took temperatures, whilst wearing protective breathing masks and
gloves to avoid infection. These shocking scenes were witnessed by a host
of tourists, who had no doubt planned to spend a relaxing day at the beach.
After being detained for seven hours in the sun with no shade, the Africans
were herded onto a truck to transport them to a holding camp. Apparently, a
dump truck was utilised for this purpose, as the beach was so remote that if
ambulances had been used, multiple trips would have been required. It was
later confirmed that none had tested positive for Ebola.

he disturbing pictures of the Africans’ treatment circulated via news
agencies from around the world. This in turn attracted the attention and
scorn of civil rights and humanitarian organisations. Pressed for a reaction,
the regional Canarian and Spanish governments blamed each other for the
episode. Arguments arose over the length of time the people on the beach, the
five hour delay for the medical team to examine them and the manner in which
they were transported. The Canarian President Mr Rivero called the situation
a “shameful” spectacle, whilst the President of the Gran Canaria Cabildo
defended the authorities, by claiming the immigrants’ rights were not abused.

on the British market. Many industry experts have
called for authorities to try and reduce this so
called “excessive” dependence on tourism from

Monarch has confirmed they will continue flying
to the island, despite a restructuring which has seen many short haul charter
destinations cancelled. These measures have been necessary as the airline

which will be held in October 2015. The event is the world´s premier
meeting for the golf travel industry and each year brings together over 1,000
delegates and hundreds of media. The epicentre of the event will be the
Magma Arte & Congresos conference centre, located in Costa Adeje. This will
boost Tenerife´s reputation as a leading European golfing destination, which
is already popular with enthusiasts of the sport. With the event to run from
October 5-8, it will provide a unique opportunity for the island to showcase itself
as a winter and summer destination to the industry. Over recent years, Tenerife
has increasingly aimed to position itself as an all-year round golf destination,
as it enjoys annual average temperatures of 23 degrees. Tenerife currently
boasts eight golf courses, all of which provide players with different tests and
experiences, with fairways flanked by breathtaking mountain and coastal vistas.

certainly a special experience. Bars and restaurants go to town
decorating their venues, with their staff decked out in ghoulish garments to

a decima edición del Open de Golf de Caleta de Fuste fue ganada por Ryan
Townsend y Álvaro Boga Boga en sus respectivas categorías. El torneo de dos
días se divide en dos categorías, en función de la capacidad. Con un centenar de
competidores había representantes de nueve nacionalidades. La primera categoría
fue para aquellos con un handicap entre 0 a 14.4, formándose el segundo grupo
con los golfistas con un handicap de 14,5 a 36. El juego se desarrolló en la
modalidad Stableford Individual.

he 10th edition of the Caleta Golf Open was won by Ryan Townsend and
Álvaro Boga Boga in their respective categories. The two day tournament
was divided into two categories, dependent on ability. With a hundred
competitors representing nine nationalities, the first category was for those with
a handicap of 0 to 14.4, with the second group comprising golfers with a 14.5
to 36 handicap. The tournament was scored in accordance with the Stableford
scoring system.

A FAB DAY!

lease forgive the pun, but Sunday October 26 was a truly special day, as
residents and holiday makers descended upon the Fabs Bar and Bistro in aid
of a local animal charity. Therein the attendees were treated to hours of fun as the
quest to find the “Fabs Fabulous Mr & Mrs” for 2014 unfolded. As can be seen
from our photo, proprietors Bill and Anne were in the thick of the action, albeit
the victorious couple were Carol and Ray. As the afternoon turned to evening,
the crowd were royally entertained by the efforts of Jan Arnott, together with Paul
and Wendy Ivis. This peaked as “Playing Away” went through their repertoire, at
which point many took to the dance floor. With the raffle and auction, plus DJ Jan
rounding off the night with karaoke, it was an all action programme from start to
finish.
side from the enjoyment, the event was a tremendous success in terms of the
funds it raised, with a total of €710 donated to the El Capitan Animal Project.

ucho ha sucedido en el
último mes, así Repsol
está cada vez más cerca
de comenzar su búsqueda
de petróleo frente a las costas de
Fuerteventura y Lanzarote. La
exploración se pondrá en marcha
seriamente en un par de semanas,
y Repsol esta animado después de
que Genel Energía anunciara que
ha encontrado petróleo en aguas
marroquíes, a tan sólo 200 kilómetros
de las Islas Canarias. Encontrado
a una profundidad de 2.825 metros
en el Sidi Musa-1, Genel Energía
se mostró cauto al opinar sobre
el hallazgo. Afirmaron que era
“prematuro” determinar su importancia
antes de realizar más pruebas. Sin
embargo, este es un duro golpe para
las Islas Canarias, ya que hasta este
momento, las compañías petroleras
han tenido poco éxito en numerosas
perforaciones en aguas marroquíes.
Repsol ha estado esperando que
el “Rowan Renasissance”, el buque
que se va a utilizar para perforar,
termine su trabajo en Angola. Ya
habiendo completado este, el
barco se encaminará hacia las
Islas Canarias. Repsol no ha hecho
ninguna declaración en cuanto a si el
barco recalará en su base logística de
Puerto de la Luz, en Gran Canaria, o
irá directamente a uno de los lugares
elegidos para empezar a trabajar.
Posiblemente, algo del secreto que
rodea esta decisión tenga relación
con la actividad de Greenpeace
en la zona. Recientemente, el
grupo ecologista ha estado activo
en las islas visitando Lanzarote,
Fuerteventura y Gran Canaria. La
organización utiliza su buque “Artic
Sunrise” para prestar apoyo a las
iniciativas locales para mantener
presión sobre el Gobierno español a
fin de acabar con las controvertidas
perforaciones. Durante su visita,
los activistas erigieron una réplica
de 6 metros de una plataforma
de perforación a poca distancia
de la costa de Lanzarote, éste es
el sitio elegido como el que más
probabilidades tiene de sufrir una
mancha de aceite. Ahí también se
simuló una mancha colocando un
material negro sobre la superficie
del agua. El objetivo era dar a
los residentes y turistas una idea
de cómo se vería si se produjese
una fuga. Greenpeace utiliza la
publicidad generada en los medios
de comunicación para criticar a las
empresas de energía por ignorar
las fuentes de energías limpias y
renovables. En Canarias hay gran
cantidad de alternativas, incluyendo el
sol, las olas y el viento.
Mientras tanto, el Gobierno de
Canarias se ha mostrado frustrado
ante sus intentos de celebrar un
referéndum sobre si los ciudadanos
están a favor de la perforación. Éste

(ABTA), cuyos miembros
expresaron sus temores
sobre los planes de Repsol
para perforar a tan sólo 60 metros de
Fuerteventura y Lanzarote. ABTA ha
escrito al ministro español de Energía
expresando sus preocupaciones,
pues las Canarias atraen a millones
de visitantes desde el Reino Unido
cada año. Al describir los planes para
tratar de bloquear la perforación, el
presidente canario afirmó que un
apoyo como el de ABTA podría ser
vital para detener las exploraciones.
El tiempo se detendrá, sin duda, si
esto ha de lograrse, pero parece
cada vez más probable que Repsol
comience la exploración en las
próximas semanas.

uch has happened within the
last month, as Repsol draw
ever closer to starting their
search for oil off the coasts
of Fuerteventura and Lanzarote. With
the exploration set to get underway
in earnest within the next couple of
weeks, Respol have been boosted
by news of a nearby discovery. This
follows the announcement that Genel
Energy has struck oil in Moroccan
waters, a mere 200 kilometres from
the Canary Islands. Found at a depth
of 2,825 metres at the Sidi Musa1 well, Genel Energy was quick to
downplay the find. They stated it
was “premature” to determine its
significance before more tests could
take place. However, this is a major
blow to all in the Canary Islands,
as up until this point, oil companies
had encountered little success at
numerous bore holes in Moroccan
waters.
Repsol has been waiting for the
“Rowan Renasissance”, the vessel
which is to be used to drill the bore
hills, to complete work in Angola.
Having now completed its work,
the boat is on its way to the Canary
Islands. Repsol has made no
statement as to whether the ship will
call into their logistical base in the
Puerto de la Luz harbour in Gran
Canaria, or proceed directly to one of
the targeted sites to start work.
Possibly some of the secrecy
surrounding that decision relates
to Greenpeace activity within the
area. Recently the environmental
group has been active in the region,
visiting Lanzarote, Fuerteventura
and Gran Canaria. The organisation
used their “Artic Sunrise” vessel to
lend support to local initiatives to
keep the pressure up on the Spanish
government to halt the controversial
drillings. During their visit, the
activists erected a 6 metre replica of
a drilling rig a short distance from the
Lanzarote coast, which was chosen
as the most likely site to suffer an
oil slick. A slick was then simulated
using giant black sheets of material
laid out on the water’s surface. The
objective was to give residents and
tourists an idea of how it would look
should a leak occur. Greenpeace
used the media publicity the event
generated to criticise energy
corporations for ignoring clean,
renewable energy sources. Within
the Canaries there are an abundance
of alternatives, including solar, wave
and wind related options.
Meanwhile the Canarian Government
has been thwarted in their attempts
to hold a referendum on whether
residents are in favour of the drilling.
They believe residents wishes are
being completely overlooked by the
Spanish government and vowed to
hold a referendum to put pressure
on Madrid. However, the Spanish
government successfully challenged
the decision, which judges at
the Constitutional Court upheld,
effectively acting as an injunction
against any such vote. Whilst the
Canarian Government accepted the
decision, they have now decided
there will a poll conducted, to
navigate the legalities of a popular
consultation.
Finally, UK travel agents have
voiced their concern and used the
prestigious World Travel Market
in London to do so. The Canarian
Government met with senior officials
from the Association of British Travel
Agents (ABTA), who expressed
members fears at plans by Repsol
to drill a mere 60 metres off both
Fuerteventura and Lanzarote. ABTA
has written to the Spanish energy
minister regarding their concerns,
as the Canaries attract millions of
visitors from the UK every year.
Outlining plans to try and block the
drilling, the Canarian President stated
that support such as that of ABTA
could be vital to halting explorations.
Time is certainly ticking by if this is
to be achieved and it seems more
and more likely that Repsol will
commence exploration in the next
few weeks.

El Día de la Constitución
Española se refiere, obviamente,
a la Constitución Española y cae
el 6 de diciembre. Es un día para
conmemorar la aprobación de la
Constitución, tal como existe hoy en
día, después de haber sido adoptada
hace relativamente unos años.
Después de años de dictadura, la
muerte de Franco marcó el inicio
de la transición a una monarquía
parlamentaria. El 6 de diciembre 1978
los españoles fueron a las urnas para
votar en un referéndum, donde la
mayoría mostró estar a favor de la
adopción formal de la Constitución.
Después de décadas de represión
y años de inestabilidad política,
esto representó un cambio hacia la
libertad y la democracia. Entre los
puntos clave que fueron incorporados,
destacan la proclamación de los
derechos fundamentales y las
libertades públicas, la división de
poderes, la soberanía nacional y la

reconocimiento a su vida,
la que vivió sin pecado.
A través del tiempo se
ha reconocido que María
nunca pecó, una convicción
de los primeros siglos del
cristianismo. La fiesta fue
introducida por los Reyes
de España como una
fiesta nacional en 1644.
Más tarde, en 1708, fue
la Iglesia quien adoptó el
día. La fecha en la que se
celebra la virtualidad de
María se estableció en gran
medida porque la iglesia
conmemora su nacimiento

been adopted comparatively recently.
After years of Dictatorship, the death
of Franco marked the beginning of the
transition to a parliamentary monarchy.
On December 6, 1978 Spanish
citizens went to the polls to vote in a
referendum, with a majority in favour
of formally adopting the Constitution.
After decades of repression and
years of political instability, this
represented a shift towards freedom
and democracy. Key points which were
incorporated included a proclamation
of fundamental rights and civil liberties,
division of power, national sovereignty
and decentralisation.
This hugely historic event set out
fundamental laws on how the country
would be governed and laid the
foundations for Spain as we know it
today. For example, under point 27
of the Constitution it was deemed
every citizen had the right to receive
education. Furthermore, this education
should help with human development
by way of respecting democratic and
civil rights. It also set out the right
for everybody to have access to a
health service, with public authorities
responsible for its organisation and
upkeep.

The second of these early
December fiestas is Día de la
Inmaculada Concepción (Immaculate
Conception). This is a religious
national bank holiday, celebrated on
the 8th of December. The Immaculate
Conception does not refer to Mary´s
virginity, but rather the date she
was conceived and in recognition
of her life, which was lived without
sin. Throughout time it has been
acknowledged that Mary never sinned,
with this conviction dating back to the
first centuries of Christianity. The fiesta
was introduced by the Kings of Spain
as a national bank holiday in 1644.
Only later, in 1708, was it adopted
by the church. The date on which
Mary´s virtuousness is celebrated
was set largely because the church
commemorates her birth on September
8. Consequently, subtracting 9 months
from this leads to December 8,
which represents the date Mary was
conceived.

ince the outbreak of Ebola, there has been a great deal of press coverage
highlighting the gulf between life in the Western world and that in Africa. On
this theme, a photograph that has gone
viral on social networking sites and the
internet depicts this discrepancy perfectly.

t first glance, the image appears to portray an idyllic morning round of
golf: a player in crisp white swings at
a ball as palm trees cast shade over
the fairway. But look beyond the rolling
greens (and upwards) and you’ll see the
line of men seated on a seven metre high
fence in the background. These men are
African migrants perched on the border
fence between Morocco and the Spanish
city of Melilla.

a Unión Europea ha expresado su preocupación por el tratamiento de los
migrantes que cruzan hacia el territorio español Melilla, en el norte de África.
A pesar de la presión de Amnistía Internacional y otros grupos de derechos
humanos, es poco probable que España modifique su postura y empiece a
aceptar solicitantes de asilo. De hecho, el gobierno Español ha dicho que va a
aprobar una enmienda legal que autorice a la policía a expulsar a los migrantes
que saltan la valla de los dos territorios españoles (Melilla y Ceuta), las únicas
fronteras terrestres entre Europa y África. Autoridades españolas dicen que
miles de africanos han tratado de pasar por encima de las vallas de siete metros
de altura en Melilla y Ceuta este año, causando numerosos inmigrantes y
policías heridos.

he European Union have expressed concern about Madrid’s treatment
of migrants crossing to Spain’s north African territory of Melilla. Despite
pressure from Amnesty International and other human rights groups, Spain is
unlikely to alter their stance and start to accept asylum seekers. Indeed, Spain’s
conservative government has said it will pass a legal amendment authorising
police to expel migrants who climb over the fences to the two Spanish-governed
territories (Melilla and Ceuta) which have Europe’s only land borders with Africa.
Spanish authorities say thousands of Africans have tried to climb over the seven
metre high fences into Melilla and Ceuta this year, with numerous migrants and
police officers injured.

electrónicos ha bajado un 90% en
España durante los últimos 12 meses. Hace
un año había 3.000 tiendas vendiendo
cigarrillos electrónicos en toda
España, sin embargo esa
cifra ha disminuido a sólo
300, según la asociación
de cigarrillos electrónicos
del país (ANCE).

ay dos razones principales para esta
bajada. En primer lugar, igual que
cualquier otra moda que emerge de manera
tan explosiva, hay una tendencia de que expande por encima y supera la
demanda. Esto se debe a que la gente ve una oportunidad de ganar dinero y
quiere entrar en un mercado que parece ser una oportunidad de crecimiento
ilimitado. Por supuesto, en realidad no hay ningún mercado que crezca
exponencialmente y existe una corrección inevitable cuando se aclara que hay

he number of shops selling e-cigarettes has plummeted by 90% in Spain in the
last 12 months. A year ago there were 3,000 shops selling e-cigarettes in Spain
but now that number is closer to just 300, according to the country’s national
e-cigarettes association (ANCE).
T
he reasons for the decline are twofold. Firstly, as with any fad that emerges
in such an explosive fashion, there is a tendency for it to over expand and
exceed demand. This is because people see an opportunity to make money
and rush into what appears to be an unlimited growth opportunity. Of course, in
reality no market grows exponentially and there is an inevitable correction when
it becomes clear there is over supply of the product. Market research suggests
many who tried e-cigarettes have now returned to conventional smoking, which
cuts demand still further. In addition, there have been many high profile concerns
regarding e-cigarettes, raised by pharmaceutical companies. This industry is
particularly rich and as such, wields great influence with politicians and decision
makers. Recently leaked emails from GlaxoSmithKline evidence the strength of
feeling against e-cigarettes. The communications detailed the belief that tougher
regulation was required, to put them on the same level as other aids to quit
smoking, such as nicotine gum.

pain has yet to introduce any regulation, but has banned the use of electronic
cigarettes in public places like hospitals and schools, because of their
possible health risks. Governments around the world have
struggled with how to regulate e-cigarettes. Supporters claim
they are a less dangerous alternative to regular cigarettes and a
valuable tool in helping smokers to quit. However, the World Health
Organisation has advised against them, saying their potential health
risk “remains undetermined”.
I
n October 2013, European lawmakers rejected a bid to classify
e-cigarettes as medicinal products, which would have restricted
their sale to pharmacies, although the UK then went on to introduce such
legislation.
A
NCE claim some 900,000 Spaniards use e-cigarettes regularly but no official
statistics are available. Under Spain’s anti-tobacco law, one of the strictest in
Europe, smoking is banned in bars, restaurants, discotheques, casinos, airports
as well as in outside places such as outside hospitals and children’s playgrounds.

Premio de Brasil, posiblemente sea Lewis Hamilton o Nico
Rosberg. Que la temporada culmine con un enfrentamiento
en el Gran Premio de Abu Dhabi resulta increíble, ya que
Rosberg tenía una ventaja inalcanzable tras su polémica
victoria en Bélgica. A partir de entonces, y sin duda un
resultado directo de la conducta antideportiva de
su compañero de equipo, Hamilton ha sido
motivada como nunca y desgranó una
racha de victorias. El final tiene lugar el
23 de noviembre a las 15.30, este
promete ser una carrera para no
perderse.

el ATP World Tour Finals
en Londres estará muy
avanzado. Este evento ve
a los ocho mejores tenistas
de 2014, de acuerdo con los puntos de ranking acumulado,
enfrentándose en el último torneo de 2014. Se dividen en dos grupos
de cuatro, seguidos por semifinales, disputándose la final el 16 de
noviembre. El evento es muy prestigioso, creciendo hasta el punto de
ser considerado casi tan digno como otro “Grand Slam”. A partir de entonces,
el tenis entrará en su temporada baja, aunque falta por jugarse la pequeña
final de la Copa Davis. Este año verá Suiza visitando Francia, con un partido
programado durante 3 días, entre el 21 y 23 de noviembre. Jugar en casa
será crucial para los franceses, como Jo-Wilfried Tsonga y Richard Gasquet
tienen que mejorar su juego si quieren prevalecer contra Stanislas Wawrinka
y el gran Roger Federer.
En golf, el US Tour ha terminado, aunque muchos de los jugadores

elcome to the penultimate extrasport of 2014! This is a
particularly exciting time to be a sports fan, as it sees the
conclusion of several sporting seasons. Arguably the most
exciting issue to be resolved is the identity of the F1 champion
driver. Following the result of the Brazilian Grand Prix, this is certain to be
either Lewis Hamilton or Nico Rosberg. That the season will climax
with a showdown in the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix is incredible,
given that Rosberg had seemed to have built an
unassailable lead following his controversial win in
Belgium. Thereafter, and no doubt a direct result
of his team mate’s unsporting behaviour, Hamilton
was motivated like never before and reeled off a
streak of wins. The finale takes place on November
23 at 3.30 pm and promises to be a race not to be
missed!
As you read this column, the ATP World Tour Finals in
London will be well underway. This event sees the eight
best tennis players of 2014, according to ranking points
amassed, face off in the last tournament of 2014. They
are divided into 2 groups of four, followed by semifinals, with the final taking place on November 16.
The event is extremely prestigious and has grown to
be considered almost worthy of grand slam status.
Thereafter, tennis enters its off season, albeit
there is the little matter of the Davis Cup Final
to be contested. This year will see Switzerland
visiting France, with the match scheduled over 3
days from November 21-23. Home advantage will
be crucial for the French, as Jo-Wilfried Tsonga
and Richard Gasquet will have to raise their game
if they are to prevail against Stan Wawrinka and the
great Roger Federer.
In golf the US Tour is over, although many of the
American players are still playing, having elected to
chase the money available in the final events of the
European season. For the European Tour is yet to
conclude as the Turkish Airlines Open and DP World
Tour Championship are still to be contested. The
former, is already underway with the final days play
on November 16. Thereafter, the action will swing to
Dubai from November 20-23, after which the bonus
cheques will be distributed. The name on the biggest
cheque of all will surely be that of Rory McIlroy after
what has been a stellar year.
As if this were not enough excitement, there
is also a packed programme of football in the
month ahead. In the English Premier League,
Southampton and West Ham are currently
exceeding expectations, whilst Liverpool and
Manchester United do exactly the opposite.
Whether this state of affairs will continue
remains to be seen, but for sure the fixtures of
these and every other team, can be found in our centre page spread.

two rounds of fixtures, the
identity of the sixteen clubs who
will progress to the knock-out
stages in February will be
determined. In addition,
those clubs that finish
in third position will
receive the consolation
prize of a place in the
Europa League. As
such, twenty-four
of the thirty-two
teams will remain
in European
competition come
2015. Whilst many
criticise a system which
allows under performers
to accumulate undeserved
money via the Europa League,
it does at least ensure most
matches in the coming weeks
will be meaningful. Without
this, several of the groups
would already be “dead”, as
the qualifiers to the premier
competition’s round of 16 have
already been decided.
A is not such a group, as every
team still harbours hopes of
progression.
More likely is that
Atlético Madrid
will prevail, as their
next engagement is
a home fixture against
Olympiacos. However,
there are many exciting
permutations thereafter, as
the Greek side could easily
qualify, as indeed could Italian
giants Juventus or even outsiders
Malmo.
Defending champions Real Madrid
has already secured their qualification
from B. Quite who will join Los Blancos
remains up for grabs. Liverpool will be
hoping the Spaniards do not relax when
they travel to Basel in match day 5, as
a Swiss win would make it very difficult
for them. Meanwhile, the English team
faces a sudden death encounter with
Ludogorets, where any loser will be
definitely eliminated. This group is set
for a thrilling finale on December 9 when
Basel visit Anfield, in all probability to
decide who goes through with Madrid.
C is another tight affair with Monaco,
Zenit and Benfica battling to keep pace
with leaders Leverkusen. One feels it
likely Zenit will defeat Benfica in Russia
on November 26, meaning the French
will have to beat Zenit in match day

also has a perfect 12
points in E. Roma, CSKA
Moscow and Manchester
City could yet finish
behind them, given two
victories in their final
fixtures. The English
champions have once
again been abysmal
in continental
competition, but do possess the
quality to beat Bayern at home
and follow it up by winning in
Rome. They will be hoping
CSKA and Roma draw on
November 25 in the early
match, as this would
give them more room for
manoeuvre against the
German champions.
PSG and Barcelona have

only two questions to be answered,
neither of which is likely to be settled
prior to the final moments on December
10. For on this day PSG travel to the
Nou Camp and Ajax host Apoel. Both
fixtures will affectively be sudden death
play-offs to determine group leadership
and third position respectively.
Group G promises another thriller as
an unconvincing Chelsea continues
to stumble their way to qualification.
Match day 5 sees them play Roberto di
Matteo’s Schalke in Germany, where a
draw would in all likelihood be enough
for the Londoners. However, Sporting
could yet spring a surprise, provided
they can overcome minnows
Maribor in Portugal on the
same day. This would put
pressure on Chelsea,
as a Sporting win at
Stamford Bridge on
December 10 could
see them crash out
completely.
The final group
is led by Porto, holding a two
point advantage over Shakhtar.
Looking at the remaining
fixtures, these two clubs
are almost certain to be
in action come February,
although there is a
chance the Ukrainians
could yet overhaul the
Portuguese. For this
to happen, Shakhtar
will either require a
favour from Bulgarian’s
Bate or more likely, triumph in
Portugal when they face Porto on
December 10.

1. Ponche caliente
de vino y especias es una
combinación de vino tinto,
un chorrito de brandy, clavo,
canela, nuez moscada, azúcar
y mezcla de frutas rojas. Los
ingredientes se calientan y
agitan para crear este clásico
de Navidad.
2. Eggnog (Ponche de
huevo) es un clásico por
la siguiente razón: es igual
de sabroso, con o sin alcohol,

local restaurants are
starting to publish their
Christmas day menus.
Indeed, many can be
found within the pages of
this edition. To get you in
the mood, this month’s focus for
our culinary readers takes on
a seasonal flavour. It is
fair to say Christmas is a
time for indulgence and
in this regard, a highlight
for many is partaking of
the many different liqueurs
and beverages available at
this special time. For those
connoisseurs amongst us,
we have produced a menu
featuring a delectable
dozen seasonal drinks for
you to savour.
1. Mulled Wine is a
combination of red wine, a
splash of brandy, cloves,
cinnamon, nutmeg, sugar
and mixed berries. The
ingredients are gently
warmed and stirred to
create this Christmas
classic.
2. Eggnog is a classic for
a reason - it is
equally tasty with
or without alcohol,
making it perfect
for any gathering.
The alcoholic
version contains
brandy, dark rum,
vanilla, nutmeg,
cream, sugar, milk
and eggs.
3. Hot Buttered Rum is another
winter warmer with dark rum mixed
with butter, lemon peel, boiled water

Finalmente, los científicos han
resuelto el misterio que ha mantenido
a la población durante décadas. Un
reportaje publicado por la prestigiosa
Royal Society en Gran Bretaña revela
los secretos de los perros pastores.
Se explica cómo un único perro
es capaz de motivar a un grupo de
ovejas a moverse de una manera tan
eficiente, y en una sola dirección.
Los investigadores han colocado un
dispositivo localizador GPS de alta
precisión en una mochila llevada
sobre un perro pastor australiano
Kelpie, éste cuidaba de un rebaño de
46 ovejas femeninas merinas en un
campo de cinco hectáreas. Los datos
del GPS permitieron el desarrollo de
un modelo informático, mostrándose
lo que impulsó al perro a moverse
y responder a las mociones de las
ovejas.
La primera tarea del perro era
agrupar a las ovejas tejiendo de
lado a lado a sus espaldas. Una vez
logrado, debía impulsar al conjunto
hacia adelante. A partir de entonces,
el perro empezó a reaccionar ante
las brechas tratando de cerrarlas, sin
dejar de impulsar a las ovejas hacia
el destino objetivo. En cada etapa
el perro monitoriza esas brechas y
evita que crezca, manteniendo a las
ovejas bajo una apretada formación.
Un solo perro pastor puede rebañar
con éxito una manada de 80 o más

Secrets
Scientists have
finally cracked a
mystery that has
puzzled people for
decades. A journal
published
by Britain’s
prestigious
Royal Society
reveals the
secrets of the
sheep dogs.
This explains
just how a single
dog is able to
motivate a group
of sheep to move
so efficiently in a
single direction.
Researchers fitted
highly accurate GPS
tracking devices
into backpacks
that were then
placed on a trained
Australian Kelpie
sheepdog and on a
flock of 46 female
merino sheep in a
five-hectare (12acre) field. The
GPS data enabled
a computer model
to be developed,
which showed what
prompted the dog to move
and respond to the motion
of the sheep.
The dog’s first rule is to
bind the sheep together
by weaving around
side-to-side at their
backs. Once this
has been achieved,
it drives the group
forward. Thereafter,
the dog reacts to
any widening of the
gaps and
acts to close
these before
once again,
continuing
to push
forward to the target destination. At
every stage, the dog is monitoring
these gaps and preventing them from
growing larger, keeping the sheep in a
tight formation.
Single sheep dogs can successfully
herd flocks of 80 or more sheep
in their everyday work and in
competitive herding trials. But the
model suggests that, in theory, a
dog could herd more than 100 by
following the simple rules.
In the past, attempts to analyse
the behaviour of sheepdogs have
suggested a maximum of 50 sheep
would be controllable. Beyond this,
either a second dog or human would
be required to prevent the spaces
from growing too great and the group
dispersing. This latest data dispels
this myth and may have numerous
practical applications, such as in
crowd control situations.

se publicará sobre el estado del
mercado inmobiliario español es
de la empresa de investigación
especializada DBK. Están de
acuerdo en que todos los principales
indicadores son mucho más positivos
este año que en años anteriores,
y en algunos casos muestran una
gran mejora. Su conclusión es que
anticipan una próxima reactivación de
promotores. Esto se está convirtiendo
en una opinión cada vez más
atractiva, pues las viviendas de un
determinado tipo vuelven a ser cada
vez más escasas. Este es sin duda
el caso de Fuerteventura, donde los
residentes esperan ver la reiniciación
de la construcción de viviendas en
2015.
El informe de DBK llegó a afirmar que
las ventas de casas nuevas subieron
un 15% en el primer semestre de
2014, después de haber caído un
52% el año pasado. Se considera
que el signo más prometedor es la
afluencia de inversores extranjeros.
Se pronostica que en curso del
sobre-endeudamiento de los
promotores españoles, y la falta
de dinero en efectivo a disposición
de los compradores españoles,
mantendrá a muchos residentes fuera
del mercado. Como tal, DBK cree que
el crecimiento del mercado vendrá
de los compradores internacionales,

went on to state that new home
sales rose by 15% in the first half

They forecast that ongoing overindebtedness of Spanish developers,
and the lack of cash available to
Spanish buyers, will keep many
locals out of the market. As such,
DBK believe the market growth
will come from international buyers
attracted by the low property prices
available. Foreign investment has
gone from around €3.5 billion in
2009, to €6.5 billion in 2013, and
they forecast it will top €7 billion
this year, up 16% on last year and
double the level of 2009.
Examining the international buying
patterns in more detail shows the
majority of this spending was on
resale property with 88% of the

un sueño, una empresa eslovaca
puede haber hecho que esto sea una
realidad.
Su vehículo AeroMobil puede volar
a 692 kilómetros usando un único
tanque de gasolina y, una vez en
tierra, sus alas se doblan hacia abajo
para que pueda aparcar como un
coche normal. El AeroMobil combina
la tecnología existente en coches
y aviones para crear un vehículo
ideal para el viajero que trabaja a
diario. En su configuración como
coche, cabe en un espacio de
estacionamiento estándar y está
propulsado por gasolina normal
disponible en todas las estaciones.
La última versión es la tercera
generación del prototipo que ha
estado en desarrollo desde 1990.
El primer modelo parecía bastante
extraño y no era práctico para el
uso diario. Desde entonces, se ha
trabajado incansablemente en la
mejora de éste, con la integración
de los componentes de aviónica.
Ha sido integral para resolver el
problema de la transformación de
la versión aerotransportada a algo
que se ajustase a los requisitos de la
carretera. Bajo este aspecto, se está
cerca de una solución, pero aún no
se ha perfeccionado el diseño, ya que

motor show, Kia’s third-generation
Sorrento sports utility vehicle was
an unexpected highlight. Designed
for families on the move who need
space, the seven-seater promises an
improved ride, handling and crash
safety. This is coupled with a higher
quality interior and design, as Kia look
to move upmarket. This strategy has
been instigated by Kia’s European
design team, based in Frankfurt.
Safety technologies, including a lane
departure warning system, which
audibly alerts drivers who stray
from the chosen lane without using
indicators, are to be included as
optional extras. Another is a blindspot detection system, which flashes
a warning in the door mirror when
another car is in the driver’s blind
spot. Also, rear cross-traffic alerts
warn against other cars driving behind
the vehicle in a car park.
The new Sorrento will cost around
€48,000. The Korean company hope
it will help to continue the phenomenal
sales growth enjoyed so far in 2014.

a standard Ferrari, if there is such
a thing, then what does a limited
edition say about its’ owner? The
manufacturer has over the years
produced a variety of models that

These one-off vehicles are offered
by invitation only, as a reward to

are just 499 LaFerraris being made, a

Learning to drive can be a
daunting prospect, whether it’s your
first time behind the wheel, or a driver
returning to lessons after a break. To
try and help learners in Puerto del
Rosario, driving school Carmelo has
incorporated a number of brand new
Kia cars to its fleet. These are the
latest Rio model´s available from the
Korean manufacturer, offering the
latest in safety and comfort. These
traits make them the ideal cars in
which to learn. Provided by Fránquiz
Automoción, the official agent for
Kia in Fuerteventura, the eight Rio´s
were specially adapted to meet legal
requirements in Las Palmas, Gran
Canaria. The official presentation of the
vehicles took place at the Fair Ground
in Puerto del Rosario as can be seen
in our photo.
Driving instructors were eager to
get their hands on the new cars, for
lessons were already booked, with
students waiting patiently by for their
classes. So literally within minutes
of receiving the keys, the cars were
being put to use! This gave these lucky
learners quite an opportunity, as they
were able to drive a brand new car on
its maiden journey. Indeed, that very
evening Fuertextra saw one of the
vehicles from the fleet in use.
