CORNITES PROCESSION: First Monday after Easter, on Mount

it that is traditionally eaten on that day.

SEAFRONT PROMENADE & MARINA
JULY
“BANDERA DE SANTURTZI” ROWING RACES
FEAST OF OUR LADY OF CARMEN: 16th July (10 days
of festivities).
The festivities commence with “sardine day”, when thousands of kilos
of sardines are grilled on the streets in the traditional manner and
distributed to onlookers. That night the people welcome "Mentxu",
the mascot of the festivities, which takes the form of a seagull in
commemoration of the town’s maritime traditions. On 16th July a
procession through the streets is held in honour of Our Lady of Carmen.
Local fishermen carry the image of Our Lady from the church of San
Jorge to the fishing port, where it is placed on a vessel decorated for
the occasion and taken out onto the waters of the El Abra bay. There,
a floral offering is made in memory of all fishermen lost at sea. Back
on land there is a traditional dance in honour of the town’s sardine
sellers as representatives of women as a whole.
The promenade runs from the fishing port to the famous
Puente Bizkaia transporter bridge in Portugalete (a UNESCO
Human Heritage Site), via the recently opened marina.
5
The construction of the breakwater and the commencement
of work on the outer harbour in the late 19th century
transformed Santurtzi. It was around that time that the town
park was built on land reclaimed from the sea. The Fishermen’s
Guild building, designed by E. Pagazaurtundua, dates form
1916. Just opposite it stands an image of Our Lady of Carmen,
who has been the patron saint of Santurtzi since 1907.

ACTIVITIES
6
On Paseo de Iparragirre, the promenade that overlooks the
harbour and the bay stands a monument erected in honour
of the fishwives who sold the sardines landed here. They would
walk up the riverbank all the way to Bilbao selling their wares
along the way. They carried the fish in a wicker basket on their
heads, and traditionally dressed in check skirts, aprons and
blue scarves. There is even a popular local song in celebration
of this tradition.

CHURCH OF SAN JORGE
All that remains of the original Romanesque building is the
tympanum over the door, which is now on display in the
Diocesan MUSEUM of Sacred Art in Bilbao. A replica is also
on show in the park in Santurtzi. The church tower was built
by Lorenzo Muñiz in 1844. The park in front of it, which stands
on land reclaimed from the sea, contains numerous unusual
species of trees including Californian giant sequoias, cedars
from the Himalayan and Atlas mountains, Japanese privet and
American and African palms.
