B EATING THE O D D S :
Eating to Prevent
Type 2 Diabetes
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recently
announced that two in five adults in the U.S. will develop
diabetes in their lifetime. Scary odds!
The good news is, research shows you can use delicious
food to decrease your odds of becoming diabetic. As always,
check with your healthcare provider before changing
your diet. Here are some foods to enjoy:

Blueberries. Every 3 servings per week reduced the risk of type 2 diabetes by 26 percent.
Drinking fruit juice, however, increased the risk. Stick to water for healthy hydration.
Tree nuts. Natural, unsalted tree nuts, including pistachios, almonds, Brazil nuts, and
cashews have been shown to increase insulin sensitivity and are heart healthy.
Low-fat yogurt. Replacing high-sugar or high fat snacks with low-fat yogurt is associated
with almost cutting the risk of type 2 diabetes in half.

Med Watch –
Heart Medications
A pharmacist is an important part of your healthcare team, and a great resource about medications.
Here, the pharmacists at IU Health La Porte Hospital help you understand heart disease medications.
This is informational only; please be sure to follow your doctor’s orders with all your medications, and
don’t make changes until you speak with your healthcare provider.
Blood Pressure
Blood pressure medications are well
tolerated overall but may cause frequent
urination, dizziness, and fatigue. Over time,
side effects should diminish. Your doctor
or nurse practitioner may prescribe more
than one drug to treat blood pressure; most
are affordable and cost as low as $4 per
month. At-home testing and journaling of
blood pressure readings can help assure the
medications are working as intended.
Cholesterol
Cholesterol medications target the bad
cholesterol in our bodies, also known as
LDL. The most commonly prescribed drugs
are statins. They are generally most
effective if taken at bedtime, and you
should discontinue and call your doctor
right away if you experience muscle pain in
your legs or extremities. A monthly supply
can cost as low as $4 depending on the
medication and pharmacy.
Carrie Loeffler, PharmD, RPh, BS, BA,
Director of Pharmacy Services
Diet & Exercise
The American Heart Association
recommends at least 150 minutes of
moderate exercise per week to prevent
heart disease and stroke. Eating foods
high in omega-3 fatty acids like fish, nuts,
and cooking with olive oil can help reduce
blood pressure and cholesterol while
keeping vessels healthy.

Physical therapist Behdad Tahayori with IU Health La Porte
Hospital has developed a human-computer interface that
enables him to study movements in stroke survivors at The
Crossing’s new motor control lab. One goal of the research
is to transfer basic science to clinical practice right here in
La Porte, giving patients access to a type of treatment
never before available here. The research provides
information on the spine’s ability to compensate for the
part of the brain that controls balance, which is often
affected after a person has a stroke. The lab is a division of
Koceja’s Motor Control Lab (renowned research on spinal
control of motion), which Tahayori has been researching
with a grant from the Academy of Sports Medicine and a
fellowship from the American Heart Association. Tahayori
was able to bring the lab to La Porte thanks to receiving the

Llame hoy mismo a nuestro
Centro de bienestar y
rehabilitación para empezar un
programa de ejercicios saludables

Control de medicamentos:
Medicamentos
orinar) frecuentes, mareos y fatiga. Con el
tiempo, los efectos secundarios tienden
a disminuir. Su médico o enfermera
practicante pueden recetarle más de un
medicamento para tratar la presión arterial;

What does it mean to discover how to live younger, longer?
That’s up to you. But if you’re dreaming big, it means being
around to spend time with your grandkids. Planning your best
friend’s 50th birthday bash. Finally getting that pain
addressed so you can golf again. Making memories.
Really – it means just feeling good – all across the board.
Welcome to Youngerlife.org – your portal to feeling great,
whatever that may look like.
