Parish Life & Ministries
When it comes to building the City of God there is
always room for more people to be involved. Here
are just some of the many ways you can get
involved in our mission of caring for our brothers
and sisters in need.
Parish Outreach:
668-1318
There are many needs that we respond to on a
regular basis. Volunteers offer specific services and
are scheduled to be “on call” a few days each month
in case those services are needed. Call the parish
office to volunteer. Gert Murphy will then contact
you to discuss how you can help.
Montauk Food Pantry: “When I was hungry you
gave me food.” Thank you to everyone who so
generously supports our Community Food Pantry!
We are always restocking our shelves.
Non
perishable foods such as rice and beans, baby
formula, and any size baby diapers are welcome!
Caring for the Sick: When you or someone you
love are not able to make it to mass for an extended
period of time, we would like to help you stay
connected with our parish life, especially by
bringing Communion to you in your home. Please
call the parish office. You will be contacted to
arrange to have someone bring you Communion.

As we bring our gifts to the altar at mass we also
bring our joy, pain, sorrow and love. We believe
that God accepts all of this from us and gives us
salvation through His Son in return.
If you would like to remember a loved one in
our Eucharistic celebrations, you can contact our
office to arrange a mass intention or to arrange a
memorial of the bread, wine, altar candles
or sanctuary lamp that we will use for a
given week. If you would like to arrange

Synod on the Family
This past fall there was a great deal of media
coverage regarding the preparations for the Bishops’
Synod on the Family. At this time, parishioners are
being invited to offer input to a series of questions in
the “Lineamenta” or final preparatory document.
Visit www.drvc.org and click on the “Synod of
Bishops” icon to access the questions and directions.

THE PATH TO FREEDOM
Most of us, if we were asked “Does the phrase ‘the
Ten Commandments’ appear in the Bible?” would likely
get it wrong, because the answer is “no.” “The Ten
Commandments” is a post‑biblical, phrase that
developed along with an image of God as police officer
that is not found in today’s passage from Exodus. The
first phrase is the key: God is the one who brings us out
of slavery; following God’s law or commands is our path
to freedom. The moneychangers whom Jesus drove from
the temple were not explicitly breaking any of the
commandments, but neither were they helping people to
find God’s path to freedom as they came to worship at
the temple. This is an important Lenten lesson for us. We
need to stop asking ourselves whether or not we are
breaking specific rules or regulations and instead
examine our lives to see if we are truly following a path
to God’s freedom through Christ.

experiences; often resulting in feelings of loneliness

St. Baldrick Head Shaving Event!
Sunday March 15th
After the 10:30 Mass
Getting your head shaved is a sign of solidarity with children who
are suffering from Cancer and the treatment they must undergo!
But solidarity is only the beginning. We also want to fight
childhood cancer, so every “shavee” is asked to get sponsors
to pay him or her to get their head shaved. The money raised
goes to St. Baldrick’s Foundation and is used
for research for cures of childhood cancer.
Make a difference in the life of a child.
Hair grows back & your heart will grow!
To register for this event, go to http://www.stbaldricks.org,
search our zip code 11954 and look up our event
on March 15, 2015.
Then follow the registration instructions!

CATHOLICS FOR FREEDOM OF
RELIGION
Since 1970, Open Doors (opendoors.org/2015world-watch-list) has been monitoring persecution
of Christians worldwide through the International
Institute of Religious Freedom with academics
dedicated to studying the religious liberty of
Christians.
China ranked #29 out of the 100 countries
where Christians face the most persecution. The
communist Chinese government aims to control all
religious activities. They have declared some
churches 'evil cults,’ the Roman Catholic Church is
illegal, and the state is actively fighting against it.
In Mexico, which ranked #38 with 120
million Christians out of a population of 125
million, Christians have been targeted because
churches are revenue centers (extortions) and
churches support programs for the rehabilitation of
drug addicts and alcoholics.
Anti-Semitism is on the rise in the Middle
East and Europe (www.wsj.com, 1/30/15) where
Jews are wondering if Europe will remain their
home forever with 26,500 people immigrating to
Israel in 2014 (theatlantic.com, 2/16/15; cnn.com,
2/16/15). FBI statistics on hate crimes committed in
America in 2012 reveal that 60% were against Jews
(wwwchristianpost.com,11/26/13).
On March 25, 2015 - 7 pm - at St. James
Church, 429 Rte 25A, Setauket - Catholics for
Freedom of Religion presents: Kelly Shackelford,
President and CEO of Liberty Institute, Plano,
Texas and Thomas Renker, General Counsel for
The Diocese of Rockville Centre. They will discuss
why there is a need to protect and restore religious
freedom in America and how it is under serious
attack in our schools and churches, military and
throughout the public arena.
Our next CFFR meeting,
Monday, March 16 at 7:00 pm in the Outreach
Center. Contact Pat Flynn 668-4545
All Are Welcome!
Lent
During the season of Lent - the season of reflection
and preparation for Easter- let us pray for the
renewal of our Church, fast from fear and anxiety
and give generously as an expression of our
gratitude for all that God has given to us!
Throughout these days, let us continue
to look forward to the joy that
Easter’s Resurrection will bring!
Good Friday is an obligatory day of fasting
(ages18-59) and abstinence from meat for
Catholics (ages 14 and older). In addition, all
Fridays during Lent are obligatory days
of abstinence from meat.

Thank You
Our Last Maureen’s Haven date is this weekend as
the winter season winds down. Thank you to
everyone who so compassionately and generously
volunteered, cooked and served, or donated food
and clothing to our homeless friends. We know they
truly appreciate all we do because they tell us so
every time we see them. Some have gotten jobs and
are looking forward to earning money this coming
summer season, and some have actually been
housed and don’t need our services anymore!
We have been called to this wonderful ministry
and we are making a difference in the lives of
these people who truly need us!
My Dear Family of St. Therese,
Remember me? It seems like so long
since I have written to you. So much has been
going on and despite the snow, I do not know
where the time has gone.
Since I last wrote we had a visit from my
dear friend, Fr. Mariusz, from Poland, who will
be returning this summer for his vacation. I
also had the opportunity to take a trip out west
to the desert for a few days (in anticipation of
joining Jesus in the desert during Lent! :)
We also had our “Upside Down Raffle”
which really brought a joy and warmth to a cold
Sunday afternoon in winter.
I would say the highlight of the past few
weeks was my formal installation as your
Pastor. Fr. Ed Sheridan from St. Rosalie’s in
Hampton Bays (our local Dean) came on
February 8th to the 10:30 Mass. It was a joy to
have my family here and several friends from
former parishes (and Fr. Mariusz, too). I would
like to say a word of thanks to the music
ministry for adding so much to the celebration.
It was great to see all the choirs together at
one Mass. I would also like to thank those who
made the reception a true celebration and gave
my family and friends a glimpse of what
wonderful, generous parishioners I have been
blessed with.
But the celebrations have not come to
an end! On March 15th we will have our
annual “St. Baldrick’s Shaving of the Heads”!
The St. Baldrick group raises money through
donations to fight childhood cancer. There are
shavers and shavees . This year I will be a
shavee! There will be more information in the
weeks ahead. Also in March we will have our
Montauk St. Patrick’s Day Parade on March
22nd. I understand that the day is truly one to
be experienced!!!! Just a heads up - On
MARCH 22nd SUNDAY MASS WILL BE AT
10:00 so as not to interfere with the parade (as
per Fr. Mike’s advise, the church will be locked
after the 10:00 Mass).
Spring is on its way!
Sincerely in Christ,
Fr. Tom & The Monsignor
March 8, 2015 - Third Sunday of Lent

Cuaresma, van a florecer, queridos hermanos.
vida personal. Como hombre y como pueblo, en su
encrucijada actual, no [estamos perdidos]. …Sabemos
