July 2015
Dear Bobcat Parents/Guardians,
The 2014/2015 school year was a great year for Central High School as we continued to
demonstrate progress in the areas of student achievement. For instance, our graduation
rate for the 2015 cohort (seniors) surpassed the 90% mark. Additionally, the class of 2015
led the District in our college application campaign with over 900 completed college applications for a 94% rate! Furthermore, the class of 2015 earned $3.5 million dollars in scholarship
monies and awards. Other noteworthy achievements include the following: Central teachers
earn National Board Certification (Mr. Jeff Chmielewski and Mrs. Theresa Harfmann); Phoenix
Union earns AdvancEd accreditation; Central’s boys’ basketball team earns state playoff
berth; last but not least, Central hosts President Obama. These are a few of the amazing
accomplishments our students and teachers have garnered with the support of our parents
and community. We thank you for your continued support of our learning community.
As we prepare to open our doors for the 2015-2016 school year, we are anticipating a great
year for Central High. Our time during the summer has been utilized in preparing for the
upcoming school year with the hiring of new teachers and support staff; expanding our
mission of Preparing Every Student for Success in College, Career, and Life and examining
areas where opportunities for student achievement will continue to thrive.

Our priority is to be fully staffed with highly qualified teachers in all content and elective
areas in order to meet the needs of our student body. We understand and are aware of the
impact teachers have on student achievement and college readiness. We expect to meet our
objective by mid-July or sooner. Central’s students will continue to forge the path in our
college campaign efforts by becoming active participants and preparing for the next phase of
their high school careers. Last but not least, we will continue to explore and create learning
opportunities for student achievement by offering relevant and rigorous coursework such as
honors, AP (Advance Placement), and DE (Dual Enrollment). Whether a student’s desire is
college, career, and/or military, we, as a staff, are poised and ready to engage, educate, and
empower each student every day.
In closing, I encourage each of you to take an active role in supporting our mission for
success. With quality staff, parental support, and relevant, rigorous coursework, I can assure
you of creating a learning environment embodied by the following statements: Learning for
all; All means “all”; and Excellence in all that we do! I am proud to be at the helm and look
forward to working collaboratively with each of you. Remember, we are making a difference!
Sincerely,
Mr. John Biera

Deliveries/Other Disruptive Items
In accordance with district policy and the Sate of
Arizona, after 10 consecutive days of absences, students
may be dropped from school. Every effort will be made
to contact the parent/guardian so it is crucial that the
school be kept informed of address or phone number
changes. Central High School practice is NOT to drop
students from a single class for non-attendance. The
student will remain in the class but may not earn credit,
resulting in an “F’ on the transcript.
Central High School is committed to academic
excellence and desires to limit interruptions to the
learning environment. Therefore these items are
not permitted at school:
 Laser Pointers
 Deliveries of Balloons/Flower Bouquets
 No Outside Food or Drinks
 Party Poppers
 Whistles
 Selling of Non-School Sponsored Items
 Student Deliveries
When a student is absent, the parent/guardian must call
the Absence Hotline/Registration Office to inform the
school of the absence before 3:00pm on the day of the
absence.
Visitors
Tardiness
In order to maximize the amount of instructional time
and to reduce the amount of classroom disruptions, it is
imperative that students be on time for each class.
Students should be in their assigned seat ready to begin
once the final bell finishes. If you arrive after the final
bell rings you will be considered tardy. If a student is
tardy for more than half of any period they will be
marked as an unexcused absence for the class.
Closed Campus
Students are not allowed to leave the campus during
the school day.
School policy is to accept only those visitors who
have legitimate business to attend to at the school.
Visitors must register in the administration office
immediately upon entering the campus. Alumni
may visit after school hours by registering in the
Administration Office. Parents are always welcome
to visit. We do ask, however, that all parents check
in with security at the front of the school and then
register in the Administration Office when they
enter. It is recommended to make an appointment
with the administrator, teacher, or counselor with
whom you want to meet.
Electronic Devices
Electronics are a part of everyday life, but interfere with the educational environment. Student electronic devices shall not be visible or used when in the classrooms. Should any device be visible or used at any time in the
classroom IT WILL BE CONFISCATED!!! Use of electronics will only be permitted in the classroom under the
supervision of the classroom instructor for educational purposes.
The school will not be responsible for lost or stolen items. It is recommended these items be left at home.
All confiscated items must be picked up by a parent/guardian located in the Assistant Principal of Student
Success Office during normal business hours.
STUDENT SERVICES OFFICE HOURS: 7:30 am - 4:00 pm
Campus Policies and Procedures
Student ID Cards
Student safety is a top priority at school. To help
provide a safe and secure campus, ALL students and
staff are required to wear a VISIBLE ID at all times. The
following procedures must be followed in order to
identify our students and keep our campus safe:
 Every student is given one FREE ID at the time of
registration
 ID’s shall be VISIBLE and worn above the waist at
all times
 Student ID is required to receive school services
* Please note that Student ID’s remain the property of the
school and shall not be defaced or mutilated.
Replacement ID’s or 1 Day Temporary ID may be
purchased in the Bookstore.
 Replacement ID - $5.00
 1 Day Temporary ID - $1.00 (available until 10am)
Discipline
Disciplinary measures include administrative
counseling, probation, detention, suspension, and
expulsion. Probation requires a student to exhibit absolute good behavior for a period of time and may include the limitation of student privileges. After-School
Detention confines a student to a designated area
for a period of time after the normal school day. InSchool Suspension confines a student to a designated area for the regular school day. Suspension from
school refers to the exclusion of students from the
educational process at Central High School or the
District for a limited period of time. Expulsion refers to
the permanent exclusion of students from the
educational process of the Phoenix Union High School
District.
Dress Code
It is our belief at Central High School that high
school is a place of learning, college, and career
readiness. Student dress and appearance should
reflect this philosophy. Students shall use good

No Pass, No Play
No Pass, No Play regulations require that students earn
passing grades in all classes in which they are enrolled.
Students in grades 9-11 must be enrolled in at least five
classes. Seniors on track to graduate may receive permission to be enrolled only in classes needed to graduate.
Grade checks are conducted at designated intervals. Any
students who have a cumulative failing grade (59% or
below) at the time of the grade check will be ineligible to
participate in games/contests during the designated in
eligibility period. Grades of Incomplete also result in in
eligibility. The No Pass/No Play policy should not be used
by teachers as a punitive measure. For example, if a
student misses or fails an assignment, quiz, test, etc. but
has a cumulative grade of 60% or higher the student shall
not be marked ineligible. Students may improve grades
and maintain eligibility by seeking help from their
teachers and utilizing tutoring services.
