STEWARDSHIP
“When they stood in ranks before God, Joshua addressed
all the people: ‘If it does not please you to serve the
LORD, decide today whom you will serve, the gods your
fathers served beyond the River or the gods of the Amorites in whose country you are now dwelling. As for me
and my household, we will serve the LORD.’ ”
Joshua 24:1b-2a,15
Many parishes have an annual stewardship renewal during which people are given the opportunity to “renew”
their involvements in prayer, in ministry, and in giving
through the offertory. These “renewals” may involve a
commitment or pledge card. This is what has occurred in
the Church for centuries. It is vital that we revisit our assurances to the Lord. As Joshua addresses the people in
today’s reading, he states, “As for me and my household,
we will serve the LORD.” This quote is relatively familiar
in the Christian world. Yet, this is exactly the kind of
pledge and covenant each of us needs to make. - See

WELCOMING MINISTRY We are looking to improve
our Parish Welcoming Ministry and could use your help!
We are building a team of parishioners that can help welcome our new parishioners by delivering a welcome basket to them. What an easy way to make our newest members truly feel like a part of our parish family! If you are
interested in helping with this ministry, contact Bridget
Hernandez, 816-979-3159 or [email protected].
UPLIFT THANKS A great big thank you to Ed Yeater
for all the time he has dedicated to cleaning the donated
bottles in which Uplift distributes water to our homeless
brothers and sisters this last couple of years. Your time
and hard work is greatly appreciated!
COLLECTION FOR ST REGIS SCHOOL-AUG 30
We will have a special collection on the weekend of August 29 and 30th for St. John Francis Regis School. The
school is located at 8941 James A Reed Rd in Kansas
City and offers Catholic education to children from Kindergarten through 8th grade. St. Sabina has several families
whose children attend St. Regis School.
CHRISTMAS IN OCTOBER - OCT 10
This year the Christmas in October workday will be held
on Saturday, October 10th. If you are interested in participating, please contact either John Ryan at [email protected] or Pete Muenks at [email protected]
or sign up in the gathering space. It is very helpful for
John and Pete to know in advance how many helpers we
will have so they can determine how many houses our
parish volunteers will be able to help with.

WHAT IS GRIEF? Grief is the normal response to loss.
Deep sorrow, especially that caused by someone’s death.
WHAT IS A “GRIEF RECOVERY GROUP”?
At St. Sabina our Adult Grief Recovery Group consists
of 6 sessions, 90 minutes in length. It is based on an adult
mutual self-help grief recovery model. It is a safe place to
recognize and acknowledge a painful loss. The participants are grievers that are courageous and have chosen
to be proactive rather than passive. It’s a place to give
your grief it’s voice. Your grief is important!
WHEN? WHERE? HOW? Sessions at St. Sabina
begin Tuesday, September 22, 2015 and continue for six
weeks. We will offer an afternoon group and an evening
group if we have enough participants. Group size is limited to 9 and we must have 5 to have the sessions. Advanced registration is important. To register or for more
information contact Marta Roper in the parish office at
816-979-3154 or [email protected].

PARISH HAPPENINGS
PARENTS LOOKING FOR A SUPPORT GROUP
SCHOLARSHIP STUDENT PROFILE
In response to our needs survey, the Love Thy Neighbor
team is hosting an informal gathering for the parents of
our parish to determine specific areas of support our families may need, such as, tutoring, parents night out, behavior issues, single parent issues, etc. If as a parent you've
ever needed information, advice or just another parent to
talk to, please plan on attending. We will meet in the Parish Hall on Sunday, September 27, during PSR (910:00). A light breakfast of fruit, pastries, coffee and juice
will be served. To help us plan for food and babysitting,
sign up slips are in the gathering space.
Tania Bellini Bernabé Alvarenga
Tania is in her 5th and final year of study at
the University of El Salvador. She began the
scholarship program in 2010 and is on track
to graduate in 2015, majoring in English.
Tania lives in Cinquera with her mother and her sister and
2 brothers. Her mother is a teacher and Tania has a sister
in 10th grade, a brother in elementary school and a sister
in Kindergarten. They live in a brick home with no indoor
bathroom, however they do have access to drinkable water and electricity.
Each student in the scholarship program is required to do
a community project each year. Each year Tania works
with the community of Cinquera helping to organize children’s activities.
Tania describes her greatest difficulties and challenges as
the distance that she has to travel to get to school and the
insecurity that she feels leaving Cinquera to go to school
in San Salvador. Tania has classes every Monday and
Wednesday. She leaves her home at 5am and her first
class begins at 9am. She gets home from school each
night at 7pm and the bus ride costs her $3.50.
Tania is grateful that “many young people are being supported by the scholarship program and that many of these
young people are working inside and out of the community.”
Please keep Tania in your prayers during her last year of
scholarship study. If you are interested in taking part in
our 2016 delegation to Cinquera, El Salvador, please contact Kris in the parish office at 816-979-3151 or
[email protected].
2016 DELEGATION TO EL SALVADOR
Our parish will be taking its second delegation to El Salvador to learn more about the scholarship program there
and to have the opportunity to meet and visit with our
scholarship students and their families. We will travel to
Cinquera and also to El Mozote. El Mozote was the site of
one of many massacres that occurred in El Salvador during their Civil War. As of now we are planning to travel to
El Salvador on January 5 and staying approximately 8
days. If you are interested or would like more information,
please contact Kris at 816-979-3151 or by email at
[email protected].
TUESDAY NIGHT CONFESSIONS
We now offer
confessions every Tuesday from 4:30-5:30pm. Confessions are also offered every Saturday from 3-3:30pm.
SMALL CHRISTIAN COMMUNITIES are groups of
Christians who gather on a regular basis to build community among themselves while at the same time reaching
out in concern and justice to others. Community building
and manifesting God’s love to others are the two feet that
keep small Christian communities grounded. At St.
Sabina we have 8 groups currently meeting. If you are
interested in joining one of our existing groups, please
contact the leader listed below. Many of our groups would
like to have additional members. We are also open to
forming new groups. For more information, please contact Biagio Mazza or Kris Larkey at 816-331-4713.

LIVING STONES: Foundations for Living Stones
A Faith Formation Program for interested Adults
“Come to him, a living stone...chosen and precious in the
sight of God, and, like living stones, let yourself be built
into a spiritual house...” (1 Peter 2:4-5)
St. Sabina is offering an adult faith formation program
titled, Foundations for Living Stones. The program explores in greater depth and knowledge the basics of our
faith. All the sessions focus on the ministry that we are
called to in and through our baptism. Communication
skills, group development, leadership skills, bible study,
church history, prayer and sacraments are some of the
many areas explored and examined in depth. Adult methods of learning and reflection are employed throughout.
The sessions are scheduled on Tuesday evenings, from 7
-9:30 PM, beginning in late August and ending in late
May. This is a 9-month commitment to deepen one’s skills
and knowledge so as to become a more effective and
engaging minister. We hope to work collaboratively with
our neighboring parishes, inviting them to be part of this
mutual learning process. For more information, please

This manner of relating demands that all relationships,
especially that of spouses, be modeled on how Christ
deals with the other, no matter who or when.
Relationships demand a choice that leads one to be
attuned to the needs of the other, and be willing to be
“bread of life” for the other. Christ is the model of the
one who came so that we all might have life. As
disciples of Christ, we too are called to be nourishment
for one another, so that all might have life.
The reading from John has some of Jesus’ own
disciples reject the “hard words” that he is saying,
and deciding to part ways with Jesus. Usually, this is
understood to be a rejection of Jesus’ affirmation that
they are to eat his flesh and drink his blood in order to
be united with God and have eternal life. While this is
partially true, the real reason that some of the disciples

These “Bread of Life discourse” readings invite us
to reflect on how we share our “bread” with others,
on how we respond to our baptismal call to reach out
and show care and concern for the other. Jesus came
down from heaven to model for us what true loving
relationships demand.
Do you believe in Jesus and what he demands? If,
like Peter, you can affirm that belief, then continually
challenge yourself to be “bread of life” for others, no
matter how demanding or costly. Such a “hard” saying
is the core of our baptismal commitment. How do you
affirm your baptismal commitment in your daily
encounters? Jesus is the model. So sing joyfully the
refrain of responsorial Psalm 34, “Taste and see the
goodness of the Lord,” and commit yourself to sharing
“bread” with others at all times.

siglos.
Amen.

Basado en la Biblia
Con Cristo como centro
Fuente de Vocaciones Apostólicas
Servicio excesivamente Laical
