Select 6th Grade – Journey Team Journey Homework Policy We all know that homework is an essential part of the middle school experience. The Journey teachers strive to give meaningful homework assignments that provide students an opportunity to practice what is learned during the school day. Students should expect daily homework including independent reading. It is expected in 6th grade that students complete and turn in their assignments on time. Each teacher on the Journey team has communicated their homework policy to the students. Journey Tardy Policy Teachers expect that students arrive on time to class with the proper materials. If a student is late to class or needs to leave class to get supplies, they will be required to sign out. The Journey teachers will be keeping track of when students are tardy or come unprepared to class. If we see a pattern and it becomes a problem, we will address it with the child, and perhaps the parent. Office Hours Teachers are available to help students outside of regular school hours when needed. Students in need of support should speak with the teacher where assistance is required to schedule a time that is mutually agreed upon. Journey Curriculum Language Arts – Mrs. Lindner, Ms. Biller, Ms. Chow, Ms. Ikhnana Language Arts class is comprised of two main sections: reading and writing. While each topic deserves special attention and instruction, we will be learning through the integration of skills and the importance of the reading and writing process. Reading: Our reading instruction focuses on helping the students develop the strategies to analyze and interpret various forms of text. We will begin the year by reviewing and refining our basic reading strategies that the students can employ before, during, and after they encounter new text. Throughout the year and across the content areas, these strategies will be encouraged and reinforced so that students begin to look at reading as an active, engaging process. Our first unit of study will focus on fiction and nonfiction. We will reinforce active reading skills and discuss the elements of a story. As the year progresses, we will encounter texts in both shared reading and guided reading formats. These selections will provide the students with ample opportunity to examine and critically discuss the various ideas presented. In addition to the in class selections, students will be expected to read independently and keep track of their progress. They choose selections from different genres in order to have a well-rounded understanding of literature. Writing: The writing program puts great emphasis on the process of writing. Generally, writing projects will be constructed around a workshop approach. Students will learn that each step in the writing process is integral to the final product. Students will become very familiar with prewriting, drafting, revising, editing, and publishing works they can be proud of. There will be a strong emphasis placed on proofreading and self-reflection throughout the year. Students will work to incorporate these six-traits of writing: content, organization, voice, word choice, sentence fluency, and conventions. Writing assignments will often provide students with a great deal of choice so they can develop their personal style and voice at this important time in their development. This year, students will have the opportunity to become familiar with writing memoirs, journal entries, informative research-based papers, argumentative pieces, and creative essays, along with poetry. Ideally, students will begin to view writing as a creative outlet this year and for the remainder of their lives. Grammar: Students will study grammar throughout the year. The grammar instruction will be reinforced through both individual and collective group exercises in proofreading. We will work on mastering the sixth grade common core language standards. A solid foundation in grammar will greatly benefit the students for the remainder of their educational years. Social Studies – Mr. Leinbach This year the social studies curriculum focuses on United States History from Westward Expansion through the Civil War and beyond. The topics we will explore are the following: Westward Expansion Pre-Civil War The Civil War Reconstruction (Post-Civil War) Industrialization The Progressive Era: 1876-1914 As we study these topics, we will focus on traditional learning skills, such as note-taking, close reading from a textbook, writing for a purpose, vocabulary, tests/quizzes, and research skills. Nontraditional learning skills will allow students to enhance their learning in a creative manner along with hands-on activities. We will also study and discuss Current Events through a variety of media as we examine the relationships of current news to the past, present, and future. We’ll also practice basic geography skills and work on various projects in cooperative groups. The social studies textbook, Creating America, has been checked out to each student for use at home. Please make sure your child keeps his/her textbook at home in a safe place so it can be returned in great condition in June. Also, students are expected to bring their binder, iPad, pen/pencil, and their assignment notebook to class everyday. Social Studies is a great way to learn about the world around us as we prepare our students for the future. I look forward to an exciting JOURNEY in sixth grade with a terrific group of talented and curious students! Math – Mrs. Stern/ Mrs. Arnett-Overton DIGITS MATH: We have adopted a new math program this year called Digits, which is aligned to the Common Core State Standards for sixth grade mathematics. All students will have a softcover book that remains at school and used during class lessons. Homework can be done on the iPad or any computer because it is a web based program, not an application. Some of the exciting topics we will be learning this year are expressions and equations, fractions and decimals, integers, rational numbers, ratios and proportions, geometry and statistics. We are very excited about all the resources you will have available to you with this new program! Please don’t ever hesitate to contact me with any questions or concerns. I am looking forward to a challenging and successful year with your family! Digits Parent Nights Our Pearson representatives will provide information on our newly adopted digital resource for math. All 6th grade parents will receive an invitation via email in mid-September. Dates: September 30 at Attea from 7-8 PM October 1 at Springman from 7-8 PM The presentation will be the same at both schools. Parents can attend either presentation regardless of which school your child attends. Science – Ms. McDonald The 6th grade science curriculum includes three units; Inside Earth, Astronomy, and Environmental Science. The students will be using a series of textbooks from the McDougal Littell Publishing Company. Each unit has its own textbook, so your child will change textbooks about every trimester. In addition to the units covered, this year’s science curriculum will include an emphasis on science process and inquiry skills through hands-on investigations. Omni students will learn to use lab equipment safely and properly. They will be encouraged to observe, question, hypothesize, experiment and discover! In addition, students will have opportunities to practice communicating their scientific knowledge both orally and written. Written information will be recorded in a science journal. Please review your child’s science journal periodically with him/her as it will give you a clear view of what their experiences are in science this year. Ultimately, students will increase their scientific literacy and understanding of science, as well as its impact on their everyday lives. Student Services – Ms. Ikhnana As a student services teacher, I see my role as two-fold. First, I am responsible for designing instruction that meets the IEP goals of students who receive special education, as well as accommodating their academic and social needs. Second, I want to support students in their general education classroom. This means providing instruction that ensures school success. I hope to blend these two instructional areas and present an integrated instructional program. It is also my intention to support learning to positively affect each student’s beliefs about themselves as learners. Please feel free to contact me if you have any comments, questions, or concerns. I am looking forward to a wonderful year! English Language Learners Attea Middle School is a diverse community of learners. The English Language Learners staff assists students whose home language is other than English and benefit from support in the content areas. Most English Language Learners (ELLs) receive instruction within the content area classroom; this is called the push-in model of instruction. Non-English speakers who have recently arrived in the United States receive more intensive services in order to help them become familiar with their new language and culture. The ELL teacher for the Omni team is:
