En muchos hogares las comidas comienzan con una oración y
terminan guardando lo que ha sobrado. Esas sobras se comerán en otro
momento por alguien que no pudo estar en la ceno o se añadirán a la comida
del día siguiente. La comida del Evangelio de hoy es un tanto similar. Antes de
la comida Jesús dio gracias y después que todos habían comido pidió que
recogieran lo que había sobrado. “Para que no se pierda nada” (Juan 6:11,1)
No es una exageración ver la semejanza con nuestra Liturgia de la
Eucaristía, la cual comienza con una oración de acción de gracias y termina
con la reserva del pan eucarístico para aquellos que no pudieron estar
presentes, y la “multitud” es enviada a compartir el amor y la entrega de
Cristo. Ya es bastante milagroso que todos los presentes puedan comer hasta
quedar satisfechos. Eso es algo por lo cual debemos estar verdaderamente agradecidos. No obstante,
el milagro se extiende más allá de la mesa. “La mano del Señor se abre para alimentarnos” (salmo
145:16) y sobra mucho amor para repartir. Las “sobras” abundantes no son para desperdiciarse, sino
para compartirlas con aquellos que necesitan el amor de Cristo.

In many homes, meals begin with grace and end with putting away the
leftover food. Those leftovers are either eaten later by someone who missed
dinner or added to tomorrow’s meals. The meal in today’s Gospel is somewhat
similar. Before the meal Jesus “gave thanks.” After all had eaten he asked that
the leftovers be gathered “so that nothing will be wasted” (John 6:11, 12).
It’s not a stretch to see the similarity to our Liturgy of the Eucharist,
which begins with a prayer of thanksgiving. It ends with the remaining
Eucharist being reserved for those who couldn’t be present and the “crowd”
being sent to share Christ’s sacrificial love. It’s miraculous enough that all who
are present can eat and have their fill. That is something to be truly grateful for.
Yet, the miracle extends beyond the table. “The hand of the Lord feeds
us” (Psalm 145:16) with leftover love to spare. The abundant “leftovers” are
meant not to be wasted, but to be shared with all those in need of Christ’s love.

DECIMOSÉPTIMO DOMINGO DEL TIEMPO ORDINARIO
Los ojos de todos de ti esperan que les des a su tiempo su alimento.
— Salmo 145 (144):15
ALIMENTANDO AL MUNDO
Al oír las narraciones de cómo Eliseo y Jesús multiplican los alimentos, y el salmo responsorial sobre
como la mano del Señor nos alimenta, es fácil caer en la tentación de pasar por alto el maravilloso himno de la
carta a los efesios en la Segunda lectura. El himno se centra en los números más potentes de la tradición bíblica: el
uno, el tres y el siete. La médula del himno es el número uno, repetido siete veces. Tres de ellas se refieren a la
Iglesia: un solo cuerpo, un solo Espíritu, como también una sola es la esperanza. Los próximas tres son los
fundamentos de la Iglesia: un solo Señor, una sola fe, un solo bautismo. Y todos estos se juntan en un solo Dios y
Padre de todos. La idea de repetir los milagros obrados por Eliseo y por Jesús al alimentar las multitudes nos
desalienta, claro está, pero la carta a los efesios nos ofrece un modo más realizable de vivir como Iglesia y de alimentar a los demás en
la Iglesia: ser siempre humildes y amables; ser comprensivos y soportarnos mutuamente con amor, y esforzarnos en mantenernos
unidos en el Espíritu con el vínculo de la paz. ¿Quién de nosotros no puede “alimentar” a la comunidad de la Iglesia viviendo de esta
manera? Es verdad que siempre estamos llamados a “alimentar” al mundo en el sentido literal de la palabra, pero nuestra misión como
Iglesia también nos dice que a los demás también hay que alimentarlos por la manera en que vivimos y actuamos cada momento de

Ayude a los niños a resolver problemas a
través de la comunicación
Muchas veces es más facil responder de manera general cuando se trata de conversaciones complicadas, pero estos momentos pueden ser oportunidades para ayudar a sus hijos a
crecer. Por ejemplo, si su hijo le dice que un amigo está siendo excluido de actividades sociales, puedes responder con una
pregunta cómo: “¿Crees que hay algo que puedas hacer para
ayudarlo a sentirse parte de la actividad?” O, cuando le pidan
ayuda para conseguir dinero o recaudar fondos para alguna
actividad, en vez de ofrecer una solución, ayúdenlos a pensar
y examinar diferentes maneras como ellos mismos pueden
hacerlo. De esta manera, no sólo estará ayudando al niño a
encontrar la solución para una situación concreta, sino que
también lo estará ayudando a crecer en sabiduría y prudencia.

terminado por este año después de ser sacada de la agenda de
la Asamblea por falta de apoyo. Gracias por todos sus

SEVENTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
FEEDING THE WORLD
With today’s two accounts of feeding miracles and the psalm response about the Lord’s hand feeding us, it
is easy to gloss over the marvelous hymn in Ephesians. It is built around the most potent biblical numbers: one,
three, and seven. The core of it is the word “one” expressed seven times. Three of these describe the church: one
body, one Spirit, one hope; the next three are the foundations of the church: one Lord [Jesus], one faith, one
baptism. All of these are bound up together in the one Father of all. While we might feel daunted by the prospect
of duplicating the wonders worked by Elisha and Jesus in the feeding of multitudes, Ephesians gives us a more
realistic way to live and “feed” others as the church: by living in humility and gentleness, by acting with patience, bearing with each
other in love, and always seeking and striving to preserve unity through peace. Who among us cannot increase the way we “feed” the
church and the world by living this way? We are always called upon to “feed” the world in the literal sense; but our mission as church
tells us that others are also fed by the way we live and act each moment of each day. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

Helping children problem solve
through communication
Often the earliest response to complicated
conversations is a generic one, but these moments can be
opportunities to help children grow. For example if a child
comes to you and tells you that a friend is being left out of
social activities, you might respond with a question: “Do you
think there is anything you can do help him/her feel more
included?” Or if your child comes to you for money for
social activities, instead of offering a solution, you might
prompt them to consider ways that they could earn money
or fundraise on their own. In this way, you are not only
helping a child find a solution to an immediate situation, but
also helping them to grow in wisdom and prudence. For
