FESTIVAL MEETING
Please join us in our last festival Meeting on Wednesday, July 15 at
7:00 pm in the Serra Center!
A PRAYER FOR OUR EARTH
All-powerful God, you are present in the whole universe
and in the smallest of your creatures.
You embrace with your tenderness all that exists. Pour out upon us the
power of your love, that we may protect life and beauty. Fill us with
peace, that we may live as brothers and sisters, harming no one.
O God of the poor, help us to rescue the abandoned and forgotten of this
earth, so precious in your eyes. Bring healing to our lives, that we may
protect the world and not prey on it, that we may sow beauty,
not pollution and destruction. Touch the hearts of those who look only
for gain at the expense of the poor and the earth.
Teach us to discover the worth of each thing, to be filled with awe and
contemplation, to recognize that we are profoundly united with every
creature as we journey towards your infinite light.
We thank you for being with us each day.
Encourage us, we pray, in our struggle for justice, love and peace.
Amen ~By Pope Francis

Being Good Stewards of Our Common Home: The Pope’s Encyclical
Seldom has a papal encyclical been an cipated with so much noise and discussion
and even premature cri cism and fear as our Holy Father, Pope Francis’ Laudato si
(“Praise Be to You”); with a beau ful sub tle “On Care for Our Common Home.” This
is the pope’s encyclical on the environment – easily found on Google—but most of us
will admit encyclicals aren’t as engrossing as our favorite summer reading. Nevertheless, it deserves our prayerful a en on; not just the commentary that journalists,
pundits, radio hosts and television analysts provide. Each of us, as Chris an stewards,
will find something that inspires and challenges us from Pope Francis’ prescrip on for
a healthy planet. For many readers, the challenge might come par cularly in the
pope’s warnings about “extreme and selec ve consumerism.” In our culture, we’re
taught that more is be er – more produc on, more growth, more profits, more
spending. But can the earth sustain this kind of economic dogma? Pope Francis echoes the Catholic teaching tradi on that we should “replace consump on with sacrifice, greed with generosity, wastefulness with a spirit of sharing.” The le er urges us
to examine our lifestyles and invites us to prayerfully consider a significant shi in our
own prac ces and habits. For example, one ques on we should ask ourselves: Can
we live with less? A visit to our closets is a good place to start, and while commi ng
to buy less, we might ruminate on the mistaken values of our consumer economy and
culture. Our pon ff points out that one-third of food that is produced is discarded.
Again, our own kitchens present evidence of our complicity in this wastefulness. The
poor suffer the most from changes in the earth’s complex ecosystem, and that is
readily evidenced by their struggle simply to find clean water. The pope also reminds
us as Chris ans called to exercise good stewardship of the planet to consider what in
our own life comprises “need” and what is “greed.” Pope Francis urgently calls us to a
renewed commitment to the Eucharist as well – something many commentators fail
to men on – and asks us to rediscover our common bond within this “act of cosmic
love.” For the Chris an steward, improving the environment must be a topic of prayer, a chance to call our poli cians to ac on, and a me to renew our commitment to
that wonderful Catholic principle of the common good.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION
Many marriage customs stand in tension
with modern American attitudes and
values, notably “giving away the bride,”
which is no longer in the Catholic
liturgy, and reminds us of a time when
marriage was a contract between men
(the groom and the bride’s father). A
Mexican custom, now approved for use
in the United States, has a very different
message.
An ancient Roman custom called
for smashing pieces of gold and silver so
that bride and groom could each keep
half. This is the origin of today’s
Mexican practice of the groom giving
thirteen gold coins to the bride,
symbolically placing all his worldly
goods into her care, and a sign of his
unconditional trust. The coins are often
given in beautiful gift boxes and are
retained as an heirloom. Why thirteen?
The standard explanation is that they
represent Jesus and the apostles. The
priest blesses the coins and pours them
into the bride’s cupped hands. Then she
entrusts them to the groom, who later
pours them back into her hands. This
enduring ritual is in such harmony with
our tradition’s view of marriage that it is
now increasingly performed by
English speaking Hispanic Catholics at
weddings in the United States.

SALIDA
IGLESIA PEREGRINA
Emilio Vicente Mateo
Pescador, que al pasar por la
orilla del lago Me viste secando
mis redes al sol.
Tu mirar se cruzo con Mis ojos
cansados Y entraste en mi vida
Buscando mi amor.
Pescador, en mis manos
Has puesto otras redes
Que puedan ganarte la pesca
mejor, Y al llevarme
contigo en la barca,
Me nombraste, Señor,
pescador.
Pescador, entre tantos que había
en la playa, Tus ojos me vieron.
Tu boca me habló.
Y a pesar de sentirse Mi cuerpo
cansado, Mis pies en la arena
Siguieron tu voz.
Pescador, manejando mis
Artes de pesca en otras riberas
Mi vida quedo. Al querer que por
todos los mares del mundo
trabajen mis fuerzas
