Chicanos fight on multiple fronts

because they refused to fight. The
year was 1968 and Martin Luther
King Jr. had just been assassinated in
Memphis.

Autobee enlisted out of a sense of civic pride and tradition with generations of family members having served in
the U.S. military. He anticipated doing his time and returning home to improve his lot with the aid of the GI bill. He
actually enjoyed bootcamp before deployment.
Autobee was the exception. Most young men were
drafted to serve; the vast majority coming from poor ethnic
neighborhoods across the country. Urban areas full of black
and brown young men were often called first along with
poor rural Americans. Because Latinos were not tracked
separately by the federal government but often considered,
“Caucasian” the statistics regarding Vietnam service vary
widely. All data however, points to over-representation
of Latinos in both service and casualties. One of the few
academics to study Latino involvement in Vietnam was Cal
State LA political scientist Ralph Guzman, who in 1969 cited
that Latinos comprised 11 percent of the troops, and over 19
percent of the war time deaths. [1]

The Chicano Movement: An Epilogue

Chicanos have been expected to straddle multiple worlds at once – the indigenous
and European roots making up mestizo heritage, learning and speaking the language of
successive colonizers, and being considered
immigrants in a country that was once
theirs. Through the Chicano Movement,
these worlds collided, laying bare the irony
of a loyal population in love with a country
that frequently didn’t love them back.
The Chicano Movement had many
branches that sometimes converged; The
Crusade for Justice supporting the United
Farm Workers with their grape strike,
Cesar Chavez and Dolores Huerta supporting the Coors boycott and New Mexico’s
Reies Lopez Tijerina, serving as a regional
organizer for the Poor People’s Campaign.
This 5-part series on the Chicano
Movement has been an attempt at providing a glimpse of the complexity that
comprised the era. The Crusade for Justice
gave voice and structure to a talented
population tired of institutionalized racism – “Ya, basta!” The West High walk-
outs inspired a new generation of Chicano
activists and exposed disparities in education. Reies Lopez Tijerina’s New Mexican
land battle exposed U.S. hypocrisy and
violations of treaties throughout history.
The Coors boycott epitomized the Chicano
movement in Colorado; homegrown and
centralized, the Colorado Chicano contingent brought national attention to discrimination in employment and helped to put
Denver on the activist map. The Vietnam
War was another case of social gymnastics
for Chicanos. Whether soldier, conscientious objector, or street protestor, Chicanos
had no easy choices during the Vietnam
War. Chicanos sacrificed and served in disproportionate numbers and always served
on the front lines abroad and at home.
The U.S. Chicano Movement solidified
in Colorado and the legacy of the movement is the foundation for our current
success in education, business and politics.
Though the work is not close to being done,
the prospects are much brighter because of
the men and women who sacrificed during
the 60’s and 70’s of the Chicano Movement.

died on the scene.
A service to honor and
remember Thyfault was held at Flatirons Community Church
in Lafayette on Friday, May 29. Thousands attended the
service where he was promoted posthumously to the rank
of trooper.

Fire Department (DFD).
The decision was made to merge with DFD after financial
constraints and operational realities became too much. The
merger was discussed for months before a decision was made.

upgrade the EFD and equipment would push upwards of $27
million, while the DFD will charge $7.8 million in the first
year and $5.4 million annually on a contract basis to provide
fire and emergency medical services.

Potter will depart the governor’s senior staff to co-author
Hickenlooper’s memoir, effective Friday, June 5. “I’m
told the traits of a great speechwriter are idealism, intelligence, and empathy,” said Hickenlooper. “Max is one of
those great speechwriters. He also has a knack for quickly
sizing up a situation and he’s not afraid to speak his mind,
which is what makes him an invaluable adviser. While
Max is leaving staff to work on the memoir, my hope is he
will continue to be a resource for the administration and
this state as we continue to write the story of Colorado.”
Hickenlooper’s memoir, “The Opposite of Woe: My Life in
Beer and Politics,” will be published in May 2016 by The
Penguin Press.

On May 1, 2003 President

only the beginning of a nightmare
as Americans and Iraqis.
The invasion that began on
March 20th of the same year was
deemed by many to be a great piece
of military strategy as Iraq was taken
by a coalition army on the ground of

less than half of the army gathered to fight the same enemy
and win the Gulf War in the previous decade. However, the
triumph of conventional arms in an asymmetrical military
reality produced only a false sense of hope and expectations
that freedom and democracy could be delivered by America
and its allies at the point of a gun.
As a combat air rescue pilot and commander, our son
has so far served two tours in Iraq and three in Afghanistan.
We as a family have suffered through his deployments and
found respite at his safe return.
Yet it is Iraq that has elicited a special type of anxiety that seems somewhat less apparent with regard to
Afghanistan. One cannot deny that both theaters of war are
equal in difficulty and danger, yet there is a sense of being
more in the right in Afghanistan than in Iraq.
We were so concerned during our son’s initial posting
to Iraq that we were always alert to news media reports concerning issues with American aircrafts especially the kind
flown by him. When things happened that might be in any
way connected to him, calls would go to my daughter-in-law
asking about his welfare.
Our inquiries got so blatant that one Saturday morning
I received an email from Ben in Iraq that basically told me
to stop calling his wife every time we got concerned as he
had left instructions that we would be the first to be notified
in case we needed to be informed. So Iraq has that special
negative affect on a personal level that our country and its
institutions seem to have been experiencing ever since victory was declared aboard an aircraft carrier off the coast of
San Diego.
The capture of Ramadi by ISIS in the last week is the latest chapter in the tragic story of a country that is not really a
country. It caused our Secretary of Defense to state that the
Iraqi army that greatly outnumbered the insurgents did not
have the will to fight.
Someone added that the Iraqi military did not have the
will to fight for Iraq. Other than the Peshmerga Kurds in the
north, for America, Iraq was never worth fighting for.
The invasion of Iraq by ISIS and the beheading of two
Americans put the United States on the road to intervention
again. The loss of Ramadi has now brought the hawks out
to insist that America put boots on the ground at least on a
limited basis.
I believe that there is some truth to those who say that
the Obama administration did not do all it could to negotiate
for a residual force to be left in Iraq after the withdrawal of
coalition troops. I think this is because the whole Iraqi situation does not pass the smell test.
The demons that torment Iraq are associated with sectarianism that divides the nation into at least three parts. On
top of that is a would be Sunni caliphate that threatens to
destroy those around them.

hemos sufrido a través de sus despliegues y encontramos un
respiro a su regreso seguro.
Sin embargo, es Iraq, que ha provocado un tipo especial
de ansiedad que parece ser menos aparente con respecto
a Afganistán. No se puede negar que ambos teatros de la
guerra son iguales en dificultad y peligro, y sin embargo hay
cierto sentido de estar más en lo correcto con Afganistán

después de la salida de las tropas de la coalición. Yo creo
que esto se debe a que la situación de Irak no pasa la prueba
del olor.
Los demonios que atormentan a Iraq están asociados al
sectarismo que divide a la nación en tres partes. Encima de
todo estos estaría el califato suni que amenaza con destruir
todo lo que le rodea.

In its current economic climate, Denver is
experiencing a bit of both.

United States. When comparing rates from the U.S. Bureau
of Labor Statistics, research professor Lee McPheters found
that Denver has increased by 3.9 percent for non-agricultural
job growth, putting the Mile High City just behind Riverside,
Calif. and San Francisco.
According to Silverstein, Denver expects a job growth
of 3 percent in 2015, which means an additional 45,000 jobs.

Pueblo’s diverse foods are reflected in
the number of different ethnic cultures that
settled in Pueblo in the late 1800’s. This was
due to the efforts of the steel mill to recruit
labor worldwide. This diverse background
gave Pueblo exposure to numerous cuisines.
One well known Italian restaurant in
Pueblo is the Pass Key restaurant, which
has been known for their homemade Italian
sausage sandwich called the Pass Key
Special. This sandwich is known statewide
and many people who grew up in Pueblo and
have since moved out of town, come back
just for the famous Pass Key Special. The
restaurant has grown over the years and has
several locations. The main one is at 518 E.
Abriendo Avenue, with a other outlets at 82
S. Radnor Drive in Pueblo West. The third
one is at 1901 W. Highway 50 and the fourth
one located at 3416 W. Northern Avenue, is
under reconstruction.
The Mexican culture has had a great
impact on Pueblo’s history. The green chili
that is grown in the Arkansas Valley is a
huge staple. The green chili in Pueblo is
special hybrid species called Mirasol. The
following Mexican restaurants have bragging rights to some of the best green chili
in Pueblo. They include Rojas Restaurant
located at 126 E. 4th St and is Pueblo’s eastside favorite. Another outstanding Mexican
restaurant is Nacho’s Restaurants, located at two locations, 409 North Santa Fe
Avenue, for the downtown crowd and at 3406
Thatcher Avenue.
President Obama visited two restaurants when he visited Pueblo during his
Presidential campaign in 2012. He visited
Romero’s Café and Catering, located at 1323
Santa Fe Drive in Blende, owned by Robert
and Carol Romero. They served President
Obama their famous award-winning chili.
Jorge’s Sombrero Restaurant and
Lounge located at 1319 E. Evans was the second place President Obama visited. Jorge’s
Sombrero Restaurant also has bragging
rights with its award-winning chili.
Mill Stop Café is located at 317 Bay
State Avenue located next to the steel mill in
Bessemer is owned by Dale and Mark Mares.
They provided the mill workers a fast lunch
during the heydays of the steel mill when
there were thousands of workers. Today
it provides some of the best green chili in
Pueblo.
There are also several Chinese restaurants in Pueblo and the Black Swan Café is
one of the oldest. Started in 1956 they have
been the recipient of the Best of Pueblo
Business Places in 2013, for Best Fried
Chicken. They are located at 209 W 7th St.
The Japanese cuisine in Pueblo also
includes Miyake Japanese Restaurant at
4104 Outlook Blvd, MOMO at 716. N Santa
Fe and MOMO West at 76 N. McCulloch Blvd
Pueblo West. These are but a few popular of
over 200 restaurants in Pueblo.

in 12,000.
But, despite the longshot odds of holding
the winning ticket, we just can’t help ourselves.
We continue to hope against hope and buy
‘Pick Six,’ ‘Powerball’ and ‘Mega Millions’ lottery tickets. Oh. And the scratch tickets, too.
Want proof? According to the North American
Association of State and Provincial Lotteries,
we spent more than $70 billion playing some
form of lottery game last year. In all, 43 states
now conduct their own lotteries.
Someone who knows these things is
native Puebloan Laura Solano. As Director
of the Colorado Lottery she can recite line
and verse about this game that has been
legal in the state since 1983.
How many places sell lottery or scratch
tickets? “We partner with more than three
thousand retailers throughout the state,”
Solano says. How do you keep people coming back for more? “We’re always tuned in
to what’s happening,” she says. “We want to
keep everything fresh and interesting.”
But, most importantly, where does lotto
money goes. “$2.7 billion has been returned
to (Colorado) citizens,” is her answer.
What’s not paid out, Solano says, goes to
Great Outdoors Colorado, the state agency
that oversees the preservation, protection
and enhancement of “Colorado’s wildlife,
park, river, trail and open space heritage.”
Visit any county in Colorado and you’ll
find projects where lottery funds have been
spent. In Costilla County, money was spent
on the Sangre de Christo Greenbelt Trail.
In Baca County, more than a million dollars went to land preservation and grant
awards. Denver got more than $22 million
for land preservation, grants, the Sun Valley
Riverfront Park and numerous other projects.
Solano has been in her job as Director
since January 2014. She succeeded fellow
Puebloan, former State Senator Abel Tapia.
Before the lottery, she was an IRS auditor,
State Fair Controller and college professor.
She says she was considering retirement
when the lottery job came along and the
challenge was too good to pass on.
One of the things the Director’s job
demands, says Solano, is to keep the games
new. Also, timely. The lottery’s newest game
commemorates the twentieth anniversary
of Denver International Airport. It’s a $2
scratch ticket that, as the lottery says, “has
a payload of prizes,” including eight $20,000
and twelve $2,000 instant prizes.
“It’s doing very well,” says Solano. So
far, the DIA scratch game has pulled in more
than $650,000 in sales.” The Director says
it’s a great way “to appeal to infrequent
players and people who travel through the
airport.” The DIA scratch ticket, like the other
two dozen lottery scratch games, appeals
to players who prefer instant gratification
rather than having to wait for Wednesday and
Saturday night drawings. The scratch variety
is sold in $1, $2, $5 and $20 denominations.
Scratch and win – or not win – tick-
ets are popular. But their payoffs aren’t
nearly as great as lottery tickets, they’re just
quicker. The combination, lotto and scratch,
equaled $362 million in sales last year.
Powerball sold another $84.5 million.
The state’s biggest lottery jackpot
occurred last year. A Powerball ticket purchased in Rifle brought one Colorado family
a $90 million windfall. Approximately thirty
percent of Powerball sales sold in Colorado,
a multi-state contest, stays in Colorado.
While lotto is big in Colorado, it’s nowhere
near New York in popularity. Empire State players invested $6.8 billion dollars buying tickets
in 2012. However you slice it, North Dakotans,
on the other hand, aren’t even close to New
Yorkers. Last year, lotto sales lag there were a
paltry $36 per person. But, looking south a few
miles, South Dakotans spent an average of $755
trying to hit it big. Only Rhode Islanders spent
more, tapping out at about $800 per person.
Despite the fact that all it takes is a
one-time stroke of luck to hit it big, a lot
of people are like Edgewater barista, ‘Sam,’
who says, “I just think there are better ways
to spend my money.” Or Joe Heguy, a print
company salesman, “I might spend a dollar
or two, now and then, if it’s convenient.”
Otherwise, he says, he’ll spend “about two
minutes fantasizing about what I’d do with
the money,” then move on to other things.
The Colorado Lottery website says chance
of winning are “1 in 35.” Of course, that could
mean walking away with only five or ten dollars on a lotto or scratch ticket. The chances

of winning ‘big’ – The Lotto – are considerably
longer. According to the state lotto office, those
chances are “1 in 5.3 million.”
But despite however fun the lottery is
painted, it’s still gambling and a regular
target of critics who say it simply preys on
those least able to afford it. A recent article
in The Atlantic cites a Duke University study
that says “the poorest third of households
buy half of all lotto tickets.” Another report
from North Carolina Policy Watch “found
that the people living in the poorest counties buy the most tickets.”
Solano defends the Colorado’s Lottery
from these criticisms. “Lotto has players from
varying economic backgrounds,” she says.
Solano also says it’s an individual’s “decision
on how they spend their money” and “based
on a person’s entertainment budget.”
But acknowledging the gambling element of the lottery, Solano says “there is a
link on our website” that warns buyers about
problem gambling. There is also an explicit
warning on its merchandise. “A responsible
gamer,” it warns, “understands the risks
associated with playing games of chance.”
It also features several links for people who
think they may have gambling problems.
But love it or hate it, the lottery is not
going anywhere. And any winner – or lotto
optimist, for that matter – will tell you the
same thing: ‘You can’t win if you don’t play.’

scandals are the
norm in professional
sports lately. A few
weeks ago the NFL
and the New England
Patriots were on the
front page of media
outlets all across the
country. This week’s
scandal comes from
BRANDON RIVERA
an international
organization, with FIFA front and center this
week. U.S. officials along with the help of
Swiss authorities raided FIFA’s headquarters
last week arresting seven top FIFA officials
in what the U.S. Department of Justice
described as racketeering, money laundering and wire fraud.
FIFA officials are accused of taking
nearly $150 Million in bribes which included
media marketing rights and FIFA World Cup
locations. FIFA hasn’t been immune to corruption; in fact FIFA is thought to be one of
the world’s biggest violators of corruption
among all sports organizations around the
world. Late last week Sepp Blatter was once
again elected as FIFA’s president however
in a surprising turn of events Blatter said
he will be stepping down as president as he
believes FIFA is in dire need of a “profound
overhaul.”
Blatter remains as president of FIFA
until the organizations executive committee
establishes a new vote for the election of his
successor. It’s likely that Blatter will remain
president through the month of June and
quite possibly until the end of summer.
In other news the Cleveland Cavaliers
will face the Golden State Warrior in the
National Basketball Association (NBA)
Championship series, which begins this
Thursday at 7:00 p.m. MST on ABC in
Oakland. Game two is on Saturday night
and game three will be played next Tuesday
in Cleveland.

won the 2015 Indy 500 Championship last
weekend beating out Will Power, who placed
second Charlie Kimball who placed third.

“Había un poco más de oportunidades
aquí para mí que en casa”, dijo el reciente
migrante de Ohio Alan Chávez quien fue
contratado recientemente por un contratista de la construcción. “Oí de mis amigos y
me vine aquí para probar suerte en este
mercado. No tenía idea de cuán rápido ha
crecido la industria de la vivienda, hasta
cuando lo vi yo mismo”.
A un 5 por ciento los recursos naturales y la construcción son las industrias
de más rápido crecimiento en el área
metropolitana, seguido por la educación y
los servicios de salud en un 4.1 por ciento,
servicios profesionales y de negocios en un
4 por ciento, y descanso y hospitalidad en
un 3.6 por ciento.

universitaria. Dice que estaba considerando la posibilidad
de la jubilación cuando el trabajo de la lotería llegó y el reto

era demasiado bueno para dejarlo pasar sucesivamente.
Una de las cosas que requiere el trabajo de Directora,
dice Solano, es mantener los juegos nuevos. Y también, a
tiempo. El Nuevo juego de la lotería conmemora el aniversario número veinte del Aeropuerto Internacional de Denver.
Es un boleto de raspar de 2 dólares, que como lo dice la
lotería, “tiene un conjunto de premios”, incluyendo ocho
premios instantáneos de 20 mil dólares y doce de dos mil
dólares.
“Está bastante bien”, dice Solano. Hasta ahora, el DIA
juego de raspar ha atraído más de 650 mil dólares en ventas”.
La directora dice que es una buena forma de “atraer a jugadores infrecuentes que pasan por el aeropuerto”. El boleto de
raspar DIA, como otras dos docenas de juego de raspar, atrae
a jugadores que prefieren una gratificación instantánea en
lugar de esperar al miércoles y sábado. La variedad de raspar

Los juegos con boletos de raspar y ganar – o no ganar –
son populares. Pero sus pagos no son tan grandes como los
de la lotería, solamente son más rápidos. La combinación,
lotto y boletos de raspar, significaron 362 millones de dólares
en ventas el año pasado. Powerball vendió otros 84.5 millones de dólares.
El premio mayor más grande de la lotería sucedió el año
pasado. Un boleto del Powerball comprador en Rifle trajo
a una familia de Colorado una bonanza de 90 millones de
dólares. Aproximadamente el treinta por ciento de las ventas
del Powerball que se venden en Colorado, una rifa de varios
estados, se queda en Colorado.
Aun cuando el lotto es algo grande en Colorado, no se
acerca en nada a Nueva York en popularidad. Los jugadores
del Empire State invirtieron 6.8 billones de dólares comprando boletos en el 2012. De cualquier forma en que se lo
mire, la gente de Dakota del Norte no se aproximan a los
neoyorquinos. El año pasado, las ventas del lotto se rebajaron a un escaso de36 dólares por persona. Pero viendo hacia
el sur a pocas millas, la gente de Dakota del Norte gastó un
promedio de 755 dólares tratando de logar algo grande. Sólo
los residentes de Rhode Island gastaron más, a un tope de
cerca de 800 dólares por persona.
A pesar de que todo lo que se necesita es un golpe de
suerte para conseguir algo grande, mucha gente es como
el barista de Edgewater, ‘Sam,’ que dice, “Yo simplemente
pienso que hay mejores formas de gastar mi dinero”. O Joe
Heguy, un vendedor de una compañía de imprenta, “Puedo
gastar uno o dos dólares, de vez en cuando, si es conveniente”. De otra manera, él dice, que pasara “dos minutos
creando fantasías acerca de lo que haría con el dinero”,
luego paso a otra cosa.
El sitio de la web de la Colorado Lottery dice que las
probabilidades de ganar son “1 en 35”. Por supuesto, eso
puede significar salir con cinco a diez dólares en un boleto
de lotto o de raspar. La oportunidad de ganar ‘en grande’ – El
Lotto – son mucho más grandes. Según la oficina del loto del
estado, esas oportunidades son “1 en 5.3 millones”.
Pero a pesar de la diversión sin embargo la lotería se
pinta, sigue siendo el juego y un blanco regular de los críticos que dicen que sólo se alimenta de los que menos pueden
permitírselo. Un reciente artículo en The Atlantic cita un
estudio de la Universidad de Duke que dice “el tercero
más pobre de los hogares compra la mitad de los billetes de
lotería”. Otro informe de Policy Watch Carolina del Norte “,
encontró que las personas que viven en los condados más
pobres compran más boletos”.
Solano también dice, “El Lotto tiene jugadores de diferentes estatus económicos”, dice ella. Y agrega, que es la
‘decisión de un individuo como gastan su dinero” y “se basa
en el presupuesto de entretenimiento de una persona”.
Pero reconociendo el elemento del juego en la lotería,
Solano dice “hay un enlace en nuestro local de la web” que
preavisa a los compradores sobre el juego. Hay también un
preaviso explícito en su mercadeo. “Un jugador responsable”, a diverte, “comprende el riesgo asociado a jugar los
juegos de azar”. Tiene también varios enlaces para gente
que piensa que pueden tener problemas de juego.
Pero quiéralo u ódielo, la lotería no va a ninguna parte.
Y según eso, cualquier ganador – u optimista del lotto – le
puede decir lo mismo: ‘No va a ganar si no juega’.
