MISSION STATEMENT
The mission of our community is rooted in Jesus the Christ.
This mission is to hear, respond to and proclaim the word of God
as found in the Hebrew and Christian scriptures.
Through the Sunday Eucharist we are called to ongoing
conversion and personal spiritual formation. As a community, we
are challenged to provide mutual support for a Catholic Christian
lifestyle and are empowered to use our gifts to minister to the
needs of others. We commit ourselves to the beatitudes, to the
spiritual and corporal works of mercy, and to minister to the
larger communities in which we live and work. We respect the
dignity of every person, at all ages and stages of life. We hand
on our Catholic heritage through catechesis, worship, service and
witness.
In carrying out this mission we further the kingdom of God in
our midst.

Queridos hermanos y hermanas en Cristo,
The Gospel of John reveals the first of seven miracles or signs performed by Jesus; the first being the turning of water into a divine wine
at the wedding Feast of Cana. Perhaps, the most important aspect of
the Cana wedding story is that we witness the wisdom of Mary, who
calls Jesus to his ministry and gives us our ministry with her request of
the wine servers, “listen to him and do what he tells you.” These are
simple directions, full of love and grace, coming from the mother that
reveals the mercy of the Father through the son, Jesus. But, being who
we are, we tend to do the opposite given our particular use of our free
will. As a result we anguish in our misery and our exile from the love
and word of God. Yet, there is hope and mercy and this transforming
mercy has ALWAYS and is ALWAYS with us. In the First Reading from
Isaiah, God beautifully restores His Chosen People and call us his
“delight” and as a result “we are no longer forsaken.” What a truly
magnificent Savior that can transform us and who assures us that our
joy and hope are possible. What must we do? First we must love and
accept Jesus as our only saving grace, follow Mary’s direction, and live
a life recognizing the gifts given to each one of us by the Father. Also,
that we recognize our gifts, though different, are all equally important.
Finally, the readings speak to us of “signs,” signs one witnesses at a
wedding or in one of the many sacraments of the church. In these
signs we look for Jesus because of our belief in him. Let us therefore
dedicate ourselves toward sharing our gifts for the sake of his people
and his Kingdom and look for signs of the Savior in our midst.

El Evangelio según San Juan revela el primero de siete milagros realizados por Jesucristo; siendo el primero al convertir el agua en vino en
las bodas de Caná. Quizás el aspecto mas importante de la historia de
las bodas de Caná es que vemos la sabiduría de María en acción, quien
llama a Jesús a su ministerio y nos da al nuestro un llamado de servidores de vino, “escúchenlo y hagan lo que el les diga”. Estas son direcciones simples, llenas de amor y gracia, viniendo de la madre que revela la
misericordia del Padre a través del hijo, Jesucristo. Pero, siendo quien
somos, tendemos a hacer lo opuesto dado nuestro libre albedrío. Como
resultado de eso, nos angustiamos en nuestra miseria y en nuestro
exilio del amor y de la palabra de Dios. Aun así, hay esperanza y
misericordia y esta misericordia transformadora ha estado y estará
siempre con nosotros. En la Primera Lectura de Isaías, Dios restaura
maravillosamente a Su Pueblo Escogido y nos llama su “delicia” y como
resultado ya no somos mas olvidados. Que Salvador mas maravilloso
que viene a transformarnos y quien nos asegura que nuestra alegría y
esperanza son posibles. ¿Qué debemos hacer entonces? Primero debemos amar y aceptar a Jesús como nuestra única gracia salvadora,
siguiendo la dirección de María y viviendo una vida reconociendo los
regalos que el Padre nos han dado a cada uno. También, dándonos
cuenta que nuestros regalos aunque todos diferentes son iguales de
importantes. Finalmente, las lecturas nos hablan de “señales”, signos
que hemos visto en las bodas o en cualquier otro sacramento en la
Iglesia. Con estos signos buscamos a Jesús porque creemos en El.
Procuremos entonces, compartir nuestros regalos por el bien de su
gente y su reino y busquemos los signos del Salvador en medio de
nosotros.

In the Gospel today, at the wedding feast in Cana, Jesus reveals
himself to his disciples and they began to believe in him. Everyday,
God also gives us signs of his love and so we also can respond in
faith and trust.
Your gift to the Society of St. Vincent de Paul becomes a sign of
God’s love to those who are suffering and you can give them a reason to believe and to trust. May your love be a sign that the Mercy of
the Father is evident through the good works and generosity of his
faithful people. .

The Free E-Waste Collection is scheduled for February 13, 2016 from 9:00 am to
1:00 pm. The E-Waste drive is a good way to help clean up the environment
through proper disposal of electronic waste and at the same time to be able to help
with much needed funds that are used to help the needy of our community. For a

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION
Although our tradition carries a long memory of marriage as a
sacrament, it may surprise you to learn that for nearly eleven centuries, there was no single wedding ceremony approved for use in
the Church. While we have evidence of priests blessing marriages
as early as the second century, in the early period church leaders
relied on civil authorities to manage marriage for everyone in society. In most cases, society yielded its authority to sanction marriage to the male heads of households.
From ancient times, marriage had been a family affair, managed
by the father of the family, who acted as priest and guardian of
family tradition. Each head wanted to keep the family gods alive,
and so he would arrange for brides for his sons, paying a “bride
price” as compensation for the loss of a skilled household worker.
As creepy as that sounds, it was a step up from the kidnapping
practice of earlier years. Even after the kidnapping raids stopped,
the customs remained. Every wedding contained the ritualized
kidnapping of the bride, the husband abducting his bride from the
festivities, carrying her over the threshold to prevent her father’s
gods from following her into her new religion. There, he fed her a
piece of “sacred cake,” initiating her into a new way of life. It’s
fascinating to see how customs endure, long after we have completely rejected the values and attitudes they originally expressed!

TRADICIONES DE NUESTRA FE
En 1502 el fraile Nicolás de Ovando y doce franciscanos dieron
inicio a la evangelización de América en la República Dominicana.
Ellos fueron enviados por los reyes españoles con el mandato de
convertir a los nativos “sin les hacer fuerza alguna”.
Con los misioneros llegaron Alfonso y Antonio Trejo quienes
traían con ellos un cuadro de la Virgen María bajo la advocación
de Nuestra Señora de la Altagracia. Ellos la llevaron a Higuey,
donde en 1572 se le construyó su primer santuario. Poco a poco
esta pequeña imagen se convirtió en la Reina del corazón de los
dominicanos.
María observa dulcemente a su recién nacido quien yace sobres
las pajas. Está coronada y lleva puesto un manto azul rociado de
estrellas y un escapulario blanco. Lleva una aureola hecha de
doce estrellas. En una esquina de la imagen san José también
observa al niño por encima del hombro derecho de María.
El 25 de enero del 1979 Juan Pablo II la coronó por ser la primera evangelizadora del continente Americano. Con ella los doce
misioneros trajeron la Alta Gracia de Jesucristo a nuestras tierras.

TALLER DE ORACION Y VIDA
¿Sabes dialogar con Dios? Los talleres de
Oración y Vida son un servicio para aprender y
profundizar en el arte de orar. Se aprende a
orar de una manera ordenada, variada y progresiva a través de 15 sesiones donde la persona se sana y libera de angustias,
miedos, tristezas y ansiedades. Si no sabes
relacionarte con el Señor, ésta es la oportunidad para aprender. El talleres empezarán el

PRAYER & LIFE WORKSHOP
A NEW EVANGELIZATION
Come to a series of 15 workshops. By
means of a woven pattern of meditations
on the Word, intensive prayer, community
reflection and silencing exercises,
participants of the workshops will slowly
become filled with a peace that surpasses
all understanding. Result? Overcoming of
complexes, traumas, controlling your
nerves, emotion stability and joy of living.
We can become more like Jesus—
sensitive and merciful, unconcerned with
self and concerned about others. The
workshops also offers a limited and humble service—teaching you how to pray and to
live a Christian life.
Each workshop runs for two hours each
Wednesday beginning on January 27,
2016—one in the morning from 9:30-11:30
am and one in the evening from 7:00-9:00
pm in St. Lawrence classroom #1. For
