WELCOME
SECOND INTERNATIONAL PHYSICAL INTERNET CONFERENCE
This conference follows the first IPIC conference organized last year in Québec. It will be also a joint event with the
end of Modulushca project, to present the advances in the concept of Physical Internet and Logistics operations.
In addition, at least six other PI projects (France, Canada, Hong-Kong) will present their latest results. The Conference will be time to meet the highly dynamic environment of European projects, share views, build consistency
across continents, markets perspectives and problems to solve to make it append.
Keynotes from key stakeholders of supply chains (manufacturers, retailers, 3PL and academics) will stimulate the
discussions in several workshop sessions focusing on subjects such as norms and the handling of boxes vs. pallets.
New business models, enabling technologies and experimentations already underway will be presented, making this
meeting a unique opportunity to learn, network and discuss the latest results and challenges about interconnected
logistics. And, because logistics is global, participants will be from all over the world including researchers, industrial
and international institution members, local authorities and standardization committees.
Physical Internet Initiative
This new organization is based on the universal interconnection of logistics services, namely a Physical Internet (or
PI) where goods travel in modular containers for the sake of interconnection in open networks. It was first proposed
by Pr. B. Montreuil and developed with Pr. E. Ballot and Pr. R. D. Meller.
This approach aims to universally interconnect logistic networks as the Internet did with computer networks. The
concept involves generalizing the use of modular containers in inland logistics to give to shippers a private space in
open networks and routing them like ‘packets’ as done with information in the Digital Internet, yet in a manner
adapted to the needs of logistics that has to harness the distinct characteristics of information and goods flow.
After several national projects that demonstrated the stakes, the EU FP7 Modulushca project and its Canadian
mirror are contributions toward its development and experimentation at an international level.

the exploitation of mines was a high-technology industry. Quite naturally, the School followed the development of
industry and MINES ParisTech and nowadays, studies, develops and teaches all the techniques useful for engineers,
including economic and social sciences.

THE MODULUSCHA PROJECT- A NEW CONCEPT FOR LOGISTICS OPERATIONS
This initiative means the first genuine contribution to the development of interconnected logistics at the European
level, in close coordination with North American partners and the international Physical Internet Initiative.
OBJECTIVE
To enable operating with developed iso-modular logistics units of sizes adequate for real modal and comodal flows
of fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG), providing a basis for an interconnected logistics system by 2030.
SCOPE
Focusing on fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG) logistics, the scope of MODULUSHCA is:
· To set the landscape by elaborating on Physical Internet enabled interconnected logistics vision and by developing
and demonstrating core components of this vision.
· To achieve both a simulation-based and a field-based proof of concept by gradually implementing¡ and testing key
functions of interconnected logistics and involving key stakeholder groups through all development and
implementation phases.
· To ensure a global synchronization with concurrent projects in the USA and Canada within the international Physical
Internet initiative and to pave the way for a common and early market implementation at the intercontinental level.

THE BESTFACT PROJECT – TOWARDS A COMPETITIVE AND SUSTAINABLE EUROPEAN FREIGHT
TRANSPORT
OBJECTIVE
The objective of BESTFACT is to develop, disseminate and enhance the utilisation of best practices and innovations
in freight transport that contribute to meeting European transport policy objectives with regard to competitiveness
and environmental impact.
BESTFACT builds upon the work of the projects BESTUFS, PROMIT and BESTLOG and integrates four interrelated
areas of the key freight logistics challenges the European Union is confronted with. The resulting three main working
areas (clusters) are:
• Urban Freight
• Green Logistics & Co-modality
• eFreight
CLUSTER
Three clusters have been chosen as they represent the most pressing issues in freight transport and logistics in terms
of economic, social and environmental sustainability. They are:
• Gathering and processing information on best practices.

THE LOGICON PROJECT – SECURE AND RELIABLE LOGISTIC CONNECTIVITY FOR SMEs
Small forwarders, carriers and other logistic SMEs are in need of affordable, reliable and trusted data-interchange
solutions to take part in international trade and commerce flows. LogiCon aims at setting up, testing and facilitating
the adoption of low-cost, low-barrier data connectivity solutions.
OBJECTIVE
Project ambition is to develop targeted solutions for data exchange in trade and logistics that improve communication through digitisation of documents exchange. Logicon aims to enable SMEs collaboration with advanced
platforms by providing them with solutions (apps, communication platforms, market places), removing technological
barriers and establishing partnerships with existing logistic platforms.
Logicon provides to transport SMEs access to Logistic platforms, from the sophisticated
ones to simple ones:
• By developing secure lean data exchange replacing individual and manual solutions, such as faxes, emails or calls.
• By demonstrating the solution as simple, transparent, easy to use.
• By easing the adaptation by SMEs as bridge towards collaboration platforms.
