11 OCTOBER 2015  28TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
“Good Teacher, what must I do?” (Mark 10:17) – a question from
today’s Gospel, Mark 16:17-30, essential to a Christian life well lived.
The alternative – drifting along without responsible reflection – is a
wasted life. The reply of Jesus to the young man who puts this question
to him is surprising. The community that gave us Mark’s Gospel certainly
believed that Jesus was God’s unique Son. The response given by
Jesus reflects a constant pattern in his teaching: he wanted to lead his
hearers to the Father. Like the young man, we will only find the answer
to the question of what direction our life should take in the presence of
the One Jesus called his God and Father.
The life of all who live in Christ is one and the same; there are, however,
different forms of discipleship. This paradox has given rise to some
confusion in the Church’s life when states of life have been compared.
The first response of Jesus in this incident is to urge fidelity to the
commandments – the pattern of life to which most of the Lord’s disciples
are called. However, this man was seeking a way that went beyond what
had been recommended. Jesus “looking at him, loved him” (Mark 10:21),
and he urged him to sell everything he owned and give the money to the
poor, and to join Jesus in the radical detachment that was Jesus’ own
way of life – for the sake of the Kingdom.
For many centuries, the comparison of the two ways of life indicated
by Jesus has been expressed in misleading terms. The radical following
has been spoken of as a higher form of Christian life. But life in Christ,
as has been said, is one. The life that is better for each person is the
life that they are called to by God – there they will find the way to the
greatness that is to be theirs in the designs of God. Since Vatican II this
confusion has been left behind. Today, however, it is being suggested
that as we have recovered an appreciation of the fact that no baptized
Christian is in an inferior state of life, we have obscured the fact that
the Lord’s call to individual disciples involved different means of living
discipleship.
The reaction of the young man leads Jesus to develop a theme
important for all forms of discipleship: earthly possessions can prove a
great obstacle to growth of life in Christ. The disciples were amazed,
because many texts of the Old Testament seemed to imply that material
wellbeing is a sign of God’s blessing on a good life. Our reading from
Wisdom 7:7-11shows that old Israel was already looking beyond this
point of view. The whole life of Jesus is a corrective of this superficial
interpretation of God’s ways. His final words have a lesson for disciples,
whatever the form of following to which they have been called – authentic
fidelity is a gift of God, “All things are possible for God” (Mark 10:27). Our
reading from Hebrews 4:12-13 can serve as a commentary on the call of
Jesus to make our life decisions in the presence of the Father. The “Word
of God” (Hebrews 4:12) is a theme of great importance in the Old Testament. It is a Word that confronts believers with the ways of God. In Jesus
we know the Word of God in person, a Word giving expression to the
boundless love and generosity of the Father who calls each one of us.
With my prayers in Christ,
Fr. Patrick

11 OCTOBER 2015  28TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
This weekend's Gospel is one of
those readings that strikes a chord of
fear in me - I possess so much that I
do not want to “give away.” While
pondering these thoughts and my
worries about the future, I am struck
by St. Mark’s observation, “Jesus,
looking at him, loved him.” I also just
read a reflection by St Ignatius of
Antioch where he confessed, "my
present need, then, is for that humility
by which the prince of this world
[satan] is overthrown." I am once
again reminded that my biggest
“treasure” is me, myself, and I. Not
so, for your parish office staff.
A short story: it seems that there
was a note, addressed to no one in
particular, that was found in the
Sunday collection by the counting
ministry. The staff person who read it
last discerned a plea for help that I
would have missed. Even better, the
author was researched, a phone
call was placed and it was quickly
discovered that the need was not for
money but for prayer. The author just
wanted a job commensurate with their
education and experience and wanted
“our” help.
A “longer” and “continuing” story:
Keeping office hours during times that
are convenient to our parishioners,
especially on weekends, is not easy.
Our limited staffing requires a lot of
personal sacrifice, by three ladies in
particular - they trade inconvenience
for their families for our “convenience.”
They regularly “give up” so that others
can “have.” Yet, you will never hear a
complaint; you will only see smiles.
A “glorious” story: We are
celebrating Margie Mendez’s 10th
anniversary as a member of the office
staff. Please stop by and thank her for
her faithful service, joyful attitude and
countless hours feeding our computer
with your generous donation data!
I / we are so blessed to be served
by humble, loving and giving followers
of Jesus. Please keep them in your
constant prayers and please pray for
our family member that wrote the note
seeking our help.
Deacon Steve
PS. This past weekend you “gave”
$33,850 to support our parish. Thank
you!

is prompting you to “give away” some
time, please contact Tony Kulassia.

REFLECTION
How many times a day do you stop to thank your parents
for something? Aside from birthdays, Christmas, or
another special holiday or event, parenting can be a
thankless job—but it’s one filled with great joy.
Everything that you are given is from the selfless love
of another human being. Would you want to have a job,
earn a decent amount of money, and then give up all
your money to your friends? The love of a parent is a lot
like the love of Jesus in today’s Gospel.
Jesus is approached by ten lepers. Lepers were considered outcasts. Their disease caused people to shut them
out of society. They had to beg for everything! But something in them made them call out to ask Jesus for help.
This is faith! Jesus had pity and healed them. Of the ten
lepers who were cleansed and healed, only one said
“thank you.” Think of your parents. Imagine that you and
your siblings were given an amazing gift and only one of
you says “thank you.” The thankful leper senses the
healing, immediately gives glory to God, and turns
around to fall at Jesus’ feet. By thanking God (or others),
you acknowledge the goodness inside another and allow
this same goodness to grow within you. This is why
parenting is such a joy, your parents get to watch your
goodness and love grow as they shower you with theirs.
ACTION
Write a thank you card to a different person each day
this week. Make sure one is to your parent(s) for all the
small things they do. Write one to a teacher who helps or
inspires you, another to a friend who always is there for
you, and maybe another to a grandparent. Whom else
can you thank?

11 OCTOBER 2015  28TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
Padre Patricio
