The Heart of Thanksgiving
Recently we celebrated the Memorial of St. Martin of Tours
(Nov. 11th). Though you may not remember his name you
probably know the most famous anecdote associated with
his life. St. Martin, while still a soldier in the Roman army,
encountered a naked beggar as he approached the gates of
the city of Amiens in ancient Gaul. Moved by love St. Martin impulsively cleaved his outer military cloak in two with
his sword and gave half of it to the man. Later that night in
his dreams St. Martin saw Jesus wearing the piece of cloak
he had given to the beggar. Jesus said to the angels: “Martin,
who is still but a catechumen, clothed me with his robe.”

off his back: He took off the coat that he was wearing and
gave it to one of the families who came after all the kids’
jackets were gone. Did I mention that he’s only 11? We like
to complicate the Gospel with rationalizations, fears, and
self-righteousness, but it’s really very simple: Do onto others
as you would have done onto you.
This week most of you will be involved in putting on one of
the greatest, most joyful acts of charity we do as a parish.
The Thanksgiving Dinner that you prepare and serve won’t
solve poverty or hunger, nor will it cure addictions or reconcile broken relationships, but for a moment it will flip the
world on its head and reveal the truth that the impoverished
people we serve are not “beneath us.” They are our kings
and queens. Thank you for unleashing grace into the world.

Thanksgiving Day Mass & Blessing of Food
All are invited to give thanks to God in the
celebration of the Holy Mass at a special
time, 10 a.m., on Thanksgiving Day, Nov.
27th, and to bring any foods that will be
served at their family celebrations; all
foods will be blessed at the end of Mass.
There will be a Mass in Vietnamese at
11:15 a.m. on Thanksgiving Day. No other
Masses or services will be conducted this day.
Office Closed
In honor of Thanksgiving the parish office will be closed on
both Nov. 27 & 28. Moreover, all-day Eucharistic Exposition is canceled on Friday, Nov. 28. We regret any inconvenience.
Why do I tell you this story? For me it sums up the meaning
of Thanksgiving. Our Savior is perfectly clear throughout
the Gospels that we will be judged by our treatment of the
poor and the lowly in this world. Simply not hurting people
is insufficient to enter the Kingdom of God; we must be
actively seeking out the lost, vulnerable, and alone in our
midst. Moreover, when we serve the poor, clothe the naked,
feed the hungry, and embrace the lonely, we do it onto
Christ Himself.
Allow me to tell you the story of a modern-day St. Martin of
Tours and he’s only 11 years old. During our St. Vincent de
Paul Winter Coat Give Away on Saturday, Nov. 8, a young
member of our parish, Mark Anderson, was so disappointed
that we ran out of kids’ coats that he literally gave the coat
Thanksgiving Day Meal
The homeless, the impoverished, those missing family and
the lonely in our area and in our parish are invited to attend
the annual Thanksgiving Dinner for those in need in our
school gymnasium from 11:30 a.m. until 1 p.m. on Nov.
27th. Many volunteers are also needed to feed the hundreds
of people who participate: servers the day of, cooks, greeters, and a cleanup crew. Sign up for just a 2 hour shift or
more. Those interested in helping should contact our St.
Vincent de Paul Society members, Kevin or Cindy
Engelkamp.
Thanksgiving Dinner Second Collection
On Nov. 22 & 23 we will take up our special second collection to provide our annual Thanksgiving Dinner for the
hungry, homeless and disenfranchised. Around 500 people
attend the dinner that’s held on Thanksgiving Day and it
takes a lot food to feed so many. You’ll find special envelopes in the ends of your pews. Please insert your donation
into them and place them in the second collection baskets.
Your gift today will go directly and immediately to the relief
of the poor in our city. Please be generous.

El Corazón de Acción de Gracias
Recientemente hemos celebrado el Memorial de San Martín
de Tours (11 de noviembre). Aunque ustedes no recuerden
su nombre, ustedes saben probablemente la más anécdota
famosa asociada con su vida. San Martín, cuando aún era un
soldado en el ejército romano, se encontró con un mendigo
desnudo mientras se acercaba a las puertas de la ciudad de
Amiens en la antigua Galia. Conmovido por amor, San Martín impulsivamente escindido su capa militar exterior en dos
con su espada y le dio la mitad de la misma al hombre. Más
tarde esa noche en sus sueños, San Martín vio a Jesús que
llevaba la pieza de capa que le había dado al mendigo. Jesús
le dijo a los ángeles: “Martin, que es aún un catecúmeno, me
vistió con la túnica.”
¿Por qué les cuento esta historia? Para mí, resume el significado de la Acción de Gracias. Nuestro Salvador es perfectamente claro a lo largo de los Evangelios que seremos juzgados por nuestro tratamiento de los pobres y los humildes de
este mundo. Simplemente no lastimar a la gente no es suficiente para entrar en el Reino de Dios; necesitamos buscando
activamente a los perdidos, vulnerables, y los que están solos
en medio de nosotros. Por otra parte, cuando servimos a los
pobres, vestimos al desnudo, alimentamos al hambriento, y
abrazamos a los que están solos, lo hacemos a Cristo mismo.
Permítanme contarles la historia de un San Martín de Tours
de hoy en día y sólo tiene 11 años de edad. Durante nuestra
Regalada de Abrigos de San Vicente de Paúl el sábado 8 de
noviembre, un joven miembro de nuestra parroquia, Mark

Gracias por desatar la gracia en el mundo a sus alrededores.

nuestro gimnasio de la escuela de 11:30 a.m. hasta la 1 p.m.
Se necesitan muchos voluntarios para alimentar a los cientos de personas quienes participan; personas para servir,

para proveer para nuestra Cena Anual de Acción de Gracias

Sacramental Preparation and Devotions
Baptism and Godparent Requirements
Parents of children who are six years of age or
younger and in need of Baptism must be registered, active parishioners of St. Peter for at least
two months. Godparents take on serious obligations when they sponsor a person for Baptism
and they should be virtuous and faithful Catholics. Godparents must be 16 years old or more,
fully initiated, practicing Catholics; if married,
godparents must be married in the Catholic
Church. Baptisms may be scheduled only after
the parents and godparents have completed the
requisite classes and the parish office receives a
letter from the parish at which the godparents
belong stating that the godparents are in good
standing with the Catholic Church and are eligible to be sponsors. Parents and sponsors must
attend a Baptismal class before the Baptism.
Classes in English usually are offered on the
fourth Sundays of March, June, September and
December from 3:00-5:00 p.m. Pre-registration
is required. Baptisms in English are usually offered on the second Sunday of the month at
2:30 p.m. and on the fourth Saturday of the
month at 9:00 a.m. For more information, please

Catechism Sacramental Preparation
for Children
The catechism school year goes from September
through May of each year. Registrations began in
May for the next school year. Classes are held on
Saturdays from 10:30 a.m. to 12 noon, or
Wednesdays from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. If the
child is Baptized, a Baptism certificate must be
given to the parish office. Children should be
registered and attend classes for at least two
years before receiving sacraments. For more

Home School Sacramental Preparation
Families who are preparing their children at
home to receive a sacrament this year should
register at the catechism office by September 6,
2014. If your child will be receiving a sacrament
this school year or the following year, please
register during Catechism and Homeschool registration times posted in the bulletin. A Baptism
certificate must be submitted. Please see the
parish website for requirements and important
dates for First Reconciliation, First Communion
or Confirmation: www.stpeterchurch.net/infosacraments.html.
Adult Catechesis, RCIA
Those over the age of seven who desire to become Catholic and/or receive the sacraments of
Baptism, Confirmation or Communion should
contact Fr. Ofalsa for classes in English, or
Sister Clara for classes in Spanish. Classes on
Catholic doctrine in English are offered weekly
from September through May on Tuesdays from
7:15 p.m. to 8:45 p.m. Classes in Spanish are
offered on Mondays at 7:15 p.m. or at 10:30 a.m.
All are welcome to attend.
Marriage
Parishioners who are registered for a minimum
of three months are eligible to begin marriage
preparation at St. Peter. In addition, the Archdiocese requires a minimum of six months of
preparation prior to your wedding date. To
begin marriage preparation in English or Spanish, please contact Fr. Cook or Fr. Ofalsa.
Hall Rentals
Parishioners registered in St. Peter Parish for at
least three months may rent the parish halls for
receptions and events. For more information
please contact Mary Ramm in the parish office.
Omaha Catholic School Consortium
St. Peter Parish is a contributing parish to
the Omaha Catholic School Consortium.
Consortium Schools are: Saints Peter and
Paul, Holy Cross, Our Lady of Lourdes,
Saint Thomas More, and St. Bernadette.

Requisitos para Bautismo y Padrinos
El Cursillo Pre-Bautismal para Padres y Padrinos es requerido para Bautismos. El cursillo es
valido por tres años. Padres de niños que serán
Bautizados deberán de registrarse, feligreses
registrados y activos de la Parroquia de San
Pedro por lo menos de dos meses. Los padrinos deberán de ser iniciados completamente,
practicando el Catolicismo, asisten en Misa por
lo menos de los domingos y días de guardar, y
si están casados, deberán ser casados por la
Iglesia Católica, y tienen 16 años o más. Los
padrinos toman sobre sí unas obligaciones muy
serias cuando apadrinan una persona para el
bautismo y deben ser virtuosos y fieles católicos. Les queremos animar a seleccionar muy
cuidadosamente los padrinos. Podrán fijar y
pedir el día para los bautismos solamente después de que los papás y los padrinos hayan
completado tres clases de requisito y después
de que la oficina de la parroquia haya recibido
de los padrinos una carta de la parroquia a donde pertenecen los padrinos, en la cual constatan
que ellos están en el buen favor de la Iglesia
Católica y que son aprobados para ser padrinos.
Para padrinos casados, por favor llevar copia de
la acta de Matrimonio por la Iglesia Católica. El
cusillo Bautismal se ofrecen cada dos meses en
tres domingos. Bautismos en español son ofrecidos usualmente el primer, segundo y tercer

Primera Comunión y Confirmación Inscripciones están de mayo a agosto de 2014 para el
