Me
This week in my religion class at Brophy, a student was
reading a passage about obeying the Church; he
commented that it sounded to him too extreme. I asked
him what made it sound like that. He replied it was
because people like to enjoy their freedom and that
obeying someone else seems to go against that freedom.
I had to agree with him that many young people are given
the message that they need to develop responsibility for
themselves, to learn self-reliance, and to think for
themselves rather than blindly accept what others tell
them.
These are good practices to develop, and it caused me to
question how well we communicate the benefits of
obedience to young people. When I consider the feast of
Christ the King, I also wonder how well the term “King”
speaks to a culture where democracy has replaced royalty
as the method for choosing leaders.
I wish I had read over today’s readings before talking to
that student, because of the many references to Jesus as
the good shepherd. It is true that many of today’s urban
youth are unfamiliar with how a good shepherd gains the
trust of his sheep, how he cares for them and leads them
to “verdant pastures” and “restful waters,” as Psalm 23
assures us.
I could have told my student that the church is entrusted
by Jesus to continue his care. I could have tapped into his
life experience by presenting Jesus as the Good Teacher,
for he might have recalled how he has trusted his own
good teachers to challenge him to grow in knowledge
while supporting and affirming his efforts. One willingly
obeys someone who is trusted.
Rather than limiting one’s freedom, obedience to the One
who is the freest and most loving Being in the universe
cannot help but free those who obey him.
So whether we relate to Jesus as king, shepherd or
teacher, we can all depend on him to help us become our
best selves.
Happy Thanksgiving to all. You are invited to celebrate
Thanksgiving Mass with us at 9am on Thursday. And
bring the bread you will serve at your table to be blessed.

Happy Thanksgiving
Thanksgiving is more than a day. It is a verb – an action word. Amidst all the food and football, remember to thank God
for the blessings in your life.

those who will be traveling this week, safe journey.
What’s Your Line?
Wondering if you could have taken advantage of the Tuition Tax Credit last year? Look at Line 27 on your 2013 state
income taxes. This line shows the amount of taxes you paid last year and the amount you could have redirected to
Catholic Education Arizona (up to the 2013 credit limits). Before you finalize your 2014 return, look at your “Balance of
Tax” line and know that you can redirect those dollars to Catholic Education Arizona (up to $2,106 for a married couple;
$1,053 single). It’s money you’ll be paying to the state anyway and by redirecting it, you ensure your tax dollars are kept
in the Faith. For more information or to make your online donation, visit www.CatholicEducationArizona.org. You can
also call our school office if you have questions.

Stewardship
“For this reason I say to you, do not be worried about your life, as to what you will eat or what you will drink; nor for your
body, as to what you will put on. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothing? “Look at the birds of the air,
that they do not sow, nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not worth much
more than they? “And who of you by being worried can add a single hour to his life? “And why are you worried about
clothing? Observe how the lilies of the field grow; they do not toil nor do they spin, yet I say to you that not even
Solomon in all his glory clothed himself like one of these. “But if God so clothes the grass of the field, which is alive today
and tomorrow is thrown into the furnace, will He not much more clothe you? You of little faith! “Do not worry then, saying,
‘What will we eat?’ or ‘What will we drink?’ or ‘What will we wear for clothing?’ “For the Gentiles eagerly seek all these
things; for your heavenly Father knows that you need all these things. “But seek first His kingdom and His righteousness,
and all these things will be added to you. Matthew 6:25-33
O Christ Jesus, when all is darkness and we feel our weakness and helplessness, give us the sense of Your presence,
Your love, and Your strength. Help us to have perfect trust in Your protecting love and strengthening power, so that
nothing may frighten or worry us, for, living close to You, we shall see Your hand, Your purpose, Your will through all
things.
For Appreciation of Each Other
We thank you, Father, for the gift of Jesus your Son who
came to our earth and lived in a simple home. We have a
greater appreciation of the value and dignity of the human
family because he loved and was loved within its shelter.
Bless us this day; may we grow in love for each other in
our family and so give thanks to you who are the maker of
all human families and our abiding peace.

Y Traigan
