III. The common good and peace in society
III. El bien común y la paz social
217. We have spoken at length about joy and love, but the
word of God also speaks about the fruit of peace (cf. Gal 5:22).
217. Hemos hablado mucho de la alegría y del amor, pero la
Palabra de Dios habla también el fruto de la paz (cf. Ga 5,22).
218. Peace in society cannot be understood as pacification or
the mere absence of violence resulting from the domination
of one part of society over others. Nor does true peace act as
a pretext for justifying a social structure which silences or
appeases the poor, so that the more affluent can placidly
support their lifestyle while others have to make do as they
can. Demands involving the distribution of wealth, concern for
the poor and human rights cannot be suppressed under the
guise of creating a consensus on paper or a transient peace for
a contented minority. The dignity of the human person and
the common good rank higher than the comfort of those who
refuse to renounce their privileges. When these values are
threatened, a prophetic voice must be raised.
218. La paz social no puede entenderse como pacificación o
ausencia de violencia lograda por la imposición de un sector
sobre otros. Tampoco la paz verdadera excusa una estructura
social que silencia o pacifica a los más pobres para que los más
afluentes puedan mantener su estilo de vida sin sobresaltos,
mientras los demás sobreviven como pueden. Las
reivindicaciones sociales que buscan la distribución de las
riquezas, la inclusión social de los pobres y los derechos
humanos, no pueden sofocarse con el pretexto de construir un
consenso burocrático o una efímera paz para una minoría
satisfecha. La dignidad de la persona humana y el bien común
están por encima de la comodidad de algunos que no quieren
renunciar a sus privilegios. Cuando estos valores se ven
amenazados, es necesaria una voz profética.
219. Nor is peace “simply the absence of warfare, based on a
precarious balance of power; it is fashioned by efforts directed
day after day towards the establishment of the ordered
universe willed by God, with a more perfect justice among
men”. In the end, a peace which is not the result of integral
development will be doomed; it will always spawn new
conflicts and various forms of violence.
220. People in every nation enhance the social dimension of
their lives by acting as committed and responsible citizens, not
as a mob swayed by the powers that be. Let us not forget that
“responsible citizenship is a virtue, and participation in
political life is a moral obligation”. Yet becoming a people
demands something more. It is an ongoing process in which
every new generation must take part: a slow and arduous effort calling for a desire for integration and a willingness to
achieve this through the growth of a peaceful and
multifaceted culture of encounter.
221. Progress in building a people in peace, justice and
fraternity depends on four principles related to constant
tensions present in every social reality. These derive from the
pillars of the Church’s social doctrine, which serve as “primary
and fundamental parameters of reference for interpreting and
evaluating social phenomena”.181 In their light I would now
like to set forth these four specific principles which can guide
the development of life in society and the building of a people
where differences are harmonized within a shared pursuit. I
do so out of the conviction that their application can be a
genuine path to peace within each nation and in the entire
world.

219. La paz tampoco «se reduce a una ausencia de guerra, fruto
del equilibrio siempre precario de las fuerzas. La paz se
construye día a día, en la instauración de un orden querido por
Dios, que comporta una justicia más perfecta entre los
hombres». En definitiva, una paz que no surja como fruto del
desarrollo integral de todos, fracasará y siempre será semilla de
nuevos conflictos y de variadas formas de violencia.
220. En cada nación, los habitantes mejoran la dimensión social
de sus vidas actuando como ciudadanos responsables en el seno
de un pueblo, no como masa arrastrada por las fuerzas
dominantes. Recordemos que «el ser ciudadano fiel es una
virtud y la participación en la vida política es una obligación
moral». Pero convertirse en pueblo demanda algo más, y
requiere un proceso constante en el cual cada nueva generación
se involucra. Es un trabajo lento y arduo que exige integración y
aprendizaje para desarrollar una cultura del encuentro en una
pluriforme armonía.
221. Avanzar en la construcción de un pueblo en paz, justicia y
fraternidad, requiere cuatro principios relacionados con
tensiones constantes propias de toda realidad social. Brotan de
los grandes postulados de la Doctrina Social de la Iglesia, y
constituyen «el primer y fundamental parámetro de referencia
para la interpretación y la valoración de los fenómenos sociales». A la luz de ellos, quiero proponer ahora estos cuatro
principios que orientan específicamente el desarrollo de la
convivencia social y la construcción de un pueblo donde las
diferencias se armonicen en un proyecto común. Lo hago con la
convicción de que su aplicación puede ser un genuino camino
hacia la paz dentro de cada nación y en el mundo entero..

Friends of the Poor Walk at Bethpage Community Park to help end poverty on Long Island. There is

CAMP ST. LUKE VBS 2015
We just finished another successful week of the summer bible camp at St. Luke’s
Church. There were 136 children and 86 teenage counselors who learned, sang,
and acted in bible stories that reinforced God's Plan 2 Make Us, 2 Be With Us, 4 Us
2 Know Him, 2 Save Us, and 2 Love Us 4-Ever!
This week would not have been possible without many people helping. Fr.
Cristobal (special thank you for always being there no matter how busy you are and for your continued generosity!), Fr.
Lugo, Fr. Carlos, Brother Carlos Lindao (thank you for all you do for the youth of our parish!) & Brother Pjeter Nilaj,
Debby Cristaldo, and I, the coordinator for Camp St. Luke, want to thank: Our maintenance crew who helped keep the
church safe and clean; Edith Ramos and Mily Samayoa, our church secretaries for their patience and help; Kevin Carroll,
Jasmine & Yasmine Jones, and Jeri-Ann Ramos in Arts and Crafts; Aggie Johnson for the
beautiful music; Carmen Casiano, Gilma Medrano, Manuela & Samantha Barajas, and

from living holiness already in this life. What is more,
the poor, the ignorant, those who have nothing to lose,
are invited, or as the book of Proverbs affirms: “Let
whoever is simple turn in here; to him who lacks
understanding I say, come, eat of my food, and drink of
the wine I have mixed!” This indicates the universal call
to sanctity, to which no one is excluded: except he who
wishes to be excluded. To live a life of holiness, the
Christian possesses one most efficacious instrument: the
Eucharist, a clear sign of the great hope, of the new
heavens and of the new earth in which justice reigns (cf
2Pt 3:13). In effect, each time that this mystery is
celebrated, “the work of redemption is realized” (LG 3)
and, as St. Ignatius of Antioch states, “we partake of the
one same bread confers immortal health, antidote
against death, so as to live in Christ forever” (Eph 20:2).
Christ promises that he who receives him has eternal life
and resurrection: “He who feeds on my flesh and drinks
my blood has life eternal, and I will raise him up on the
last day.” Why do we lose the opportunity to receive
Christ? St. Paul reproves those who allow themselves to
be led astray by life’s folly: “Keep careful watch over
your conduct. Do not act like fools, but like thoughtful
men. Make the most of the present opportunity, for
these are evil days... try to discern the will of the Lord.”
Evil days are coming, and without spiritual strength we
will be unable to handle the situation. In the same way
that corporal nourishment serves to restore our lost
strength, we have another spiritual nourishment, the
Eucharist, that strengthens charity, which in daily life
tends to be debilitated. This living charity erases, as the
Council of Trent declares, venial sins: “Giving himself to
us, Christ restores our love and makes us capable of
breaking with the disorderly love of creatures so as to
be rooted in the Lord” (no 1394).

vivir ya en esta vida la santidad. Es más, están invitados
los pobres, los ignorantes, los que no tienen nada que
perder, o, como afirma el libro de los Proverbios: “los
inexpertos, los faltos de juicio que vengan a comer mi
pan y a beber el vino que he mezclado”. Esto indica la
vocación universal a la santidad, de la cual nadie queda
excluido: sólo aquel que quiere permanece fuera. Un
instrumento eficaz que poseemos los cristianos es la
Eucaristía, signo manifiesto de la gran esperanza, la de
los cielos nuevos y la tierra nueva en los que habitará la
justicia (cf 2 P 3,13). En efecto, cada vez que se celebra
este misterio, “se realiza la obra de nuestra
redención” (LG 3) y, como afirma, S. Ignacio de
Antioquía, “partimos un mismo pan que es remedio de
inmortalidad, antídoto para no morir, sino para vivir en
Jesucristo para siempre” (Ef 20,2) Cristo promete al que
le recibe la vida eterna y la resurrección: “El que come
mi carne y bebe mi sangre, tiene vida eterna, y yo lo
resucitaré el último día”. ¿Por qué perdemos la
oportunidad de recibir a Cristo? San Pablo amonesta a
aquellos que se dejan llevar de la insensatez de la vida:
“Fijaos bien cómo andáis; no seáis insensatos, sino
sensatos. Sabed comprar la ocasión, porque vienen días
malos… daos cuenta de lo que el Señor quiere”. Vienen
días malos y no sabremos dominar la situación porque
no tenemos la fuerza del espíritu. Y así como el
alimento corporal sirve para restaurar la pérdida de
fuerzas, tenemos otro alimento espiritual, la Eucaristía,
que fortalece la caridad que, en la vida cotidiana, tiende
a debilitarse; y esta caridad vivificada borra, como
declara el Concilio de Trento, los pecados veniales (DS
1638). O como dice el Catecismo: “Dándose a nosotros,
Cristo reaviva nuestro amor y nos hace capaces de
romper los lazos desordenados con las criaturas y de
arraigarnos en él” (nº 1394).

Con gran solemnidad se celebró
en nuestra parroquia de San
Lucas, el dos de agosto de 2015,
las fiestas patronales de El
Salvador del Mundo, con la
presencia del Padre José Luis
Mejía, venido del Salvador para
celebrar este evento con sus
compatriotas, autoridades civiles
de El Salvador residentes en
Long Island y de numeroso
público. Acabada la santa Misa se realizó la procesión a cargo de la Asociación de Veteranos Militares de El Salvador
hacia el lugar donde iba a tener lugar la transfiguración de Nuestro Señor. Recibida la bendición. Terminado el
momento de la Transfiguración se iniciaron los cantos y bailes y otras actuaciones que amenizaron una tarde muy
agradable para todos. Desde aquí damos las gracias a todos los que participaron en la preparación de este evento con el
que honramos a nuestro Señor.#
The festivities of El Salvador del Mundo
were held with great solemnity in the
parish of St. Luke, on August 2, 2015. We
were graced by the presence of Rev.
Father Jose Luis Mejia, who was the main
celebrant of the Holy Mass.
Civil
Authorities of El Salvador living
in Long Island honored this event attended
by many Salvadorian people. the
Association of Military Veterans of El
Salvador led the procession after the
Eucharist to the place where the image of
the Savior of the World was lifted high to be
seen by all, reminding us of our Lord´s
Transfiguration at Mount Tabor. Songs,
dances and other performances followed in
what became a very pleasant and spiritual experience for all. We thank all those who participated in the preparation
of this event in which we honor our Lord.#

Golden Wedding Liturgy Honoring
Couples Married Fifty Years or More
This fall, couples that have been married fifty years or
more will be honored at liturgies on Sunday, October 4th
at the Church of Saint Rose of Lima in Massapequa, and
on Sunday, November 8th at the Church of Christ the King
in Commack. Both liturgies will begin at 2:30 pm.
Couples may register for ONE liturgy. Registration forms
and complete instructions can be obtained at the rectory.
Registration must be received by the Office of Worship by
Sept. 18th for the October 4th liturgy and by October 23rd
for the November 8th liturgy. If you have any questions
