defended its activities in the
South China Sea as restrained
and responsible Friday after the
U.S. intelligence chief called
its expansion of outposts in the
region an “aggressive” effort to
assert sovereignty.
Chinese Foreign Ministry
spokesman Hong Lei said the
country’s activities on shoals and
in surrounding waters it claims
are “reasonable, legitimate
and legal” and that its attitude
has been one of “restraint and
responsibility.”
China says it has historical
claims to a huge swath of the

Es un grupo de salsa fundado en 1981 en Cali
Colombia por Jairo Varela y Alexis Lozano. Varela
fue director del grupo hasta su muerte en 2012, así
como su productor, compositor y vocalista. Alexis
Lozano, quien tocaba el trombón y era arreglista,
dejó la agrupación para formar la Orquesta
Guayacán.
El Grupo Niche es considerado una de las
agrupaciones salseras más importantes de América
Latina. Tanto nacionales como internacionales. El
primer álbum de Grupo Niche “Al Pasito”, fue
lanzado en 1980, aunque esta producción se vio
eclipsada por el éxito que sostenía la agrupación
Fruko y sus tesos.
Al año siguiente el grupo encontró el éxito
con su segundo álbum, “Querer Es Poder”, sobre
todo con el sencillo “Buenaventura y Caney” que
cosechó gran éxito a nivel nacional y logró una
repercusión notable en otros países de América
Latina.
El grupo se trasladó en 1982 a Cali, lugar que
se volvió la casa de la agrupación. Después de
grabar dos álbumes más, el Grupo Niche lanzó
“No Hay Quinto Malo” en 1984, que contó con
la canción “Cali Pachanguero”, homenaje a la
“capital mundial de la salsa”, tema con el que
Niche se convirtió en la principal agrupación de
salsa de Colombia.
En 1986, la banda incorporó al cantante
puertorriqueño Tito Gómez, quien había trabajado
previamente con el grupo puertorriqueño La
Sonora Ponceña y con Ray Barretto, el Padrino del
Jazz Latino.
Más tarde ese año, el Grupo Niche lanzó “Me
huele a matrimonio”. Después, otro puertorriqueño
se unió a la agrupación, el pianista Israel
Tanenbaum, que eventualmente abandonaría el
grupo para unirse a una agrupación paralela de
Niche, la Orquesta Guayacán.
El Grupo Niche es conocido tanto por su música
de baile rápido y vigoroso, como por temas de corte
romántico de ritmo más lento. Entre sus éxitos más
conocidos están “Cali Ají”, “Del Puente p’allá”,
“Sin sentimiento”, “Una Aventura”, “Etnia”,
“Gotas de Lluvia”, “Han Cogido la Cosa”, “Mi
Pueblo Natal”, “Hagamos lo que diga el corazón”,
“Duele más”, “Nuestro Sueño” y la cumbia
“Canoa Rancha”.
Su canción más famosa es “Cali Pachanguero”.
En Canada y sus alrededores fue muy notable en
Montreal Julio 21 2001 y15 de Julio de 2006 para
la celebración de la independencia de Colombia, el
8 de Mayo del 2010 en celebración de lods 30 años
de Aniversario, de la Banda. Octubre 11 del 2008

is a salsa group founded in 1978 in Cali, Colombia. Currently based in Cali,
Colombia, it enjoys great popularity throughout Latin America. It was founded
by Jairo Varela and Alexis Lozano.
Varela remained with the group until his death in 2012, becoming producer,
director, songwriter, vocalist and guiro player. Alexis Lozano, trumbone player
and arranger later left to form Orquesta Guayacán. It also included Nicolas
Cristancho, on the piano; Francisco Garcia, on the bass; Luis Pacheco, on
the congas; as well as vocalists Jorge Bazán and Hector Viveros.World salsa
capital” catapulted Niche as one of the top salsa bands of Colombia.
Grupo Niche played in Montreal on July 21, 2001 for a party to celebrate the
independence of Colombia (July 20). Grupo Niche was also accompanied that
night with another band called Balmore Estrada y su Nueva Sensacion, who was
formed in the late 1980s by Balmore Estrada.
Grupo Niche also played again in Montreal, on July 15, 2006, in the
festival colombiano, October 2008 and on May 8, 2010 to celebrate the 30th

Domestic Violence happens at many
levels from all walks of life,
Culture,Age and incomes. Financial
burden, broken homes, Religion,
Alcohol -Drug Addiction, DivorceCustody,Child Abuse are just some
of the main roots causes and lingers
for years.
There are many Agencies involved
in trying to help, but often barriers
they face are language, legal and fear
from those who are victims not wanting to
come forward because of isolation, ridicule
and not believed.
The discussions among agencies and those
who just come for their self information and
any solutions presented and implimented by
Law is one more Victory up the Ladder.
The Round Table had each group moving
from table to table giving ideas to each of
the presenters and at the end each presenter
gave an over all review of what they heard as
being meaningful.
Many who are aware of Domestic Violence
like friends,neighbours do not report because
they do not want to get involved and seeing it
as internal family issue and cases can drag on
and on if they are reported and those reporting
to trying to help at times gets victimize by the
abusers extended family or others.

Boko Haram attacks force Canadian
withdrawal in Niger

ttawa (AFP) - Canadian special forces
participating in military training in
southeast Niger, near the border with Nigeria,
were ordered to withdraw recently to avoid
battling with Boko Haram Islamists, the
military said Thursday.
The troops had been posted to the town of
Diffa, where the government of Niger declared
a state of emergency on February 11 following
attacks in the region that borders Boko Haram’s
stronghold in northeast Nigeria.
The Canadians are participating in USsponsored counterterrorism training that
started on February 16 and is due to wrap up
on March 9.
The annual program has 1,300 troops
from 19 countries training militaries in five
African countries in shooting, movement,
communications, and mission planning.
DNA tests have confirmed that the older
girl is the daughter of Celeste and Morne
Nurse, who was snatched from Groote
Schuur hospital as a three-day-old baby
named Zephany in April 1997, local media
reported. The parents, who later had three
more children, have celebrated Zephany’s
birthday every year since she was kidnapped,
never giving up hope that their first-born
child would come back to them someday, the
Cape Argus said.

country and flag as their own and

remarked thatthis love and recognition
of the Canadian flag extends beyond
our borders.
The celebration hosted by uTurn
Project was hosted at the Genesis
Centre.

secretary remarked how a simple
act of holding up the flag along with
other Canadians can feel and make
a difference as suddenly everyone
in that place is united irrespective of
background, faith and colour! Sam

mentioned that this is the fourth year
they have organized this event and
each year has been unique as we
hosted this in various parts of the city.
This year, right after Valentine’s Day,
the love affair will continue to engage new
Canadians as well as those that can trace
a longer history of calling Canada their
home. Several members of the provincial
and federal government including, Deputy
Mayor Jim Stevenson, MLA Moe Amery
were present and MLA Linda Johnson
brought the keynote address on behalf

China’s latest survey finds increase in wild giant pandas

EIJING (AP) — Wild giant
pandas in China are doing
well.
According to a census
by China’s State Forestry
Administration,
the
panda
population has grown by 268
to a total of 1,864 since the last
survey ending in 2003.
Nearly three quarters of the
pandas live in the southwestern
province of Sichuan. The
remaining pandas were found
in the neighboring Shaanxi and
Gansu provinces.
China began surveying its
giant pandas in the 1970s. The
latest census began in 2011 and

took three years to complete.
The number of giant pandas
in captivity grew by 211, more
than double the previous survey
figure, according to the census
released Saturday.
The administration said China
has set up 27 new preservation
areas
for
giant
pandas,
contributing to the growth in their
numbers.

found 319 hydropower stations
