Garbage, Government, and Public Health in New York
Wednesday, July 22 • 7:00pm • Program code: SAAHSC7
By the end of the 19th century, New York was one of the filthiest cities
in the world. Mortality rates from preventable disease rivaled those of

this decades-old crisis was ignored – until 1896, when an unlikely leader
transformed the city. Dr. Robin Nagle will share the story of a Civil War
officer named George Waring, Jr., and the broom-wielding army he marshaled
to bring about a new day for New York. In his success, Waring improved
the health and well-being of all New Yorkers and permanently altered our
expectations of a city’s role in maintaining basic standards of public health.
Dr. Nagle teaches anthropology and environmental studies at NYU and is
“anthropologist-in-residence” for the NYC Department of Sanitation.

Ask for Nature Kits at the Children’s
Reference Desk.

Math) learning and creative enjoyment.
Each kit has a theme and combines
library resources and physical objects.
There are five kits available: Circuits,
Bridges, Draw, Bongo & Rhythm, and
Simple Machines. Ask for a Maker Kit at
the Children’s Reference Desk. LIMIT ONE
KIT PER FAMILY.
1,000 Books Before
Kindergarten
The concept is simple, the rewards are
priceless. Spend quality time with your
children and encourage pre-literacy skills
so they will enter kindergarten ready to
read, listen, and learn! Although 1,000
may sound like a lot of books, if you read
10 picture books a week, you could be
done in less than two years. The program
is self-directed and no registration is
required. We’ll provide sheets to track
your progress as well as incentives along
the way. Get started today!
