Pastor’s Letter
Dear Parishioners,
We thank you for participating in praying the Rosary during the month of October for peace in the world, our families and for human dignity to respect life (protecting life from the moment of conception to natural death). There are
many violent issues and concerns that make our family weak and we need much support from society and the culture
that we are living in. We need to pray to the Holy Family for support and obtain support from the Church's leaders
(to find a way to support our Christian family). We thank you for taking time to attend the Cornerstone Catholic
Conference at the Tacoma Dome. We thank you for engaging with the parish life by participating in different ministries of our regional parishes. We are trying to build up a strong faith community by inviting you to join us for the
month of November to pray for our ancestors, great great grandparents, grandparents, relatives and friends who have
gone before us. We thank them for giving us our life and we appreciate them for passing on to us our cultural life (by
introducing us to the Gospel, the Good News of Our Lord Jesus Christ and the sacraments to nurture our Faith. You
are cordially invited to join us for daily Mass and to participate in the parish ministries.
You have received the parish annual report for last year's budget and I hope that you take time to read the parish
report carefully, so we can appreciate what we have done for last year. You also will receive the letter to invite you
to participate in the parish stewardship campaign. Please take some time to pray over on how you can be a good
steward of God's gift to you and to the parish. Please complete your commitment card to assist the financial council
to assist me to work on next year's budget, so we can prioritize on what we want to work on. I met with the Long
Range Plan for Vision 2017 implementation. We need your support to complete the goal we all have decided as our
parish priority (the area we have chosen to do).
We thank you for your love and care for our parish. We have ordered some more tables at St. Ann Church's hall. We
also changed all the lights at the school building at St. Ann to save on the electricity bill. The school is cleaned up
and is used for many different events. We bought another lawn mower for the use at St. John of the Woods' Church.
Some people see the need for another one, so we have purchased it to use for the parish ground. We are struggling to
find the facility for to cater for many different programs from Sacred Heart's Church. We are working on the demolition of the old school building project and build a new building in its place for the use of the Faith Formation and our
parish's center for various activities. This project is a challenging project, but we have a group of leadership working
very hard to make this possible. It is taking a little longer than we have planned. Please keep us in your prayers and
thoughts and support us so we can bring joy and hope to this parish life.
When I was in American Samoan, I learned about white Sunday celebration. I thought that we should have this event
as one of our celebrations in our parish each year (on the second Sunday of October). The parents spent a whole
weekend to shop for their children and the children wear the best clothes and costumes to be in the Church's celebration and act out different stories of the Bible. This is a wonderful celebration for the children and some of us (adults)
can recall our childhood when we attend this celebration. The children are truly God's gift to the world and our Faith
Community. We congratulate the Samoan's community for taking time organizes this event at St. Ann's Church last
weekend.
We thank you for coming this weekend to celebrate our Faith with us. There is much information in our regional
parish bulletin and website that we cordially invite you to visit. We thank the parents, teachers, volunteers, and many
of you who assisted at the Children's Mass last weekend. It was a faithful celebration that we have for this year since
starting the CCD program and the Faith Formation. There are many different activities and events within our
regional parishes that I would like to invite
you to join us. You will find so much love
and care by engaging in the parish ministry!
May The Lord continue to bless upon you
and your family!
Sincerely yours in Christ,
Fr. Tuan Nguyen, D.Min.,

Religious Education Program
This past weekend our CCD students at St. Ann’s and SJOW had their 1st Children’s Mass in which to take a major
roll. The students did the first and second reading, responsorial psalm, carried up the gifts and sang their special
songs. Congratulations on a great job, students!
We thank the parents for their cooperation in getting the students to the 5:00 p.m Mass at St. Ann’s and the 11:00
a.m Mass at SJOW’s.
It is important for our students and their families to be at Mass on Sunday or Saturday night. We thank the teachers
for preparing the students.
We will begin our preparations for the Christmas Pageant.
The practices will start October 30th at St. Ann and November
1st at SJOW and will continue every week. We need permission slips and permission to take pictures of students. Every
student is encouraged to take part.

by Barbara & Clarence Leingang
The Catechism of the Catholic Church defines General Confession
and Absolution as: a communal form of the Sacrament of Penance
in which, in a case of grave necessity, a priest may give absolution
to all persons present at one time. However, this form of absolution can only be given to these specific persons after they have
made a general but not individual confession of their sins. For the
absolution to be valid, the faithful must have the intention of individually confessing their sins in their next individual reception of
the Sacrament of Penance. Absolution is an essential element of
the Sacrament of Penance. The priest, by the power entrusted to
the Church by Christ, pardons the sin(s) of the penitent.
(CCC1424, 1442, 1449, 1453, 1480, & 1483) The Church does
not have the power to replace or substitute personal confession
with General Absolution. However, the Bishops (USCCB) can
define when and how General Absolution can or may be used
when a serious necessity arises. This is called “complementary
norm” and fulfills the need when the faithful might be deprived of
the Sacraments and Holy Communion for a long period of time. It
was never intended to be used in the USA. Examples are Mission
Territories where opportunities for receiving the Sacraments
maybe for a very long duration due to shortages of priests. Another example would be outstanding danger of death such as war
time. There could also be a time when an extraordinary number of
penitents were waiting to have their confessions heard, excluding
Christmas and Easter. These decisions would be made by the local
bishop and not the parish priest. The regulations have been set in
Canons 960-963. During Pope John Paul II’s reign, detailed directions were specifically put into place to forestall any abuse in the
implementation of General Absolution. For a General Absolution
to be valid, an Act of Contrition must be made prior to absolution.
General Absolution forgives all venial and mortal sins when a
penitent is sorry. The general confession must be sincere and cannot be used as a stratagem to avoid individual confession. A Penitential Service that includes individual confession and absolution is
licit. Reference: Catechism of the Catholic Church, EWTN,

Do you know our volunteers?
Richard and Elaine Seeberger were married in Visitation Catholic Church in 1957. They joined
Sacred Heart Parish in 1958. Blessed with 2 sons and 1 daughter, 4 grandchildren & 7 great grandchildren. Their children attended Sacred Heart School. When they were students Elaine helped with
Mother’s Club, playground duty etc. Rich taught CCD and helped coach baseball. He also was a
member of Holy Names Society. When the parish council was established he served on the first
council for a number of years; Elaine was a member of the Liturgy committee.
More recently both have been Eucharist Ministers for 30+ years, both at Sacred Heart, and Rich at weekday morning Mass at
St. Ann’s and also altar server. Rich has been an active member of St. Vincent De Paul for 41 years; both are Monday morning
counters; Elaine does posting weekly, answers the phone and stuffs bulletins. Rich fills in when the need arises. “We are happy
to volunteer our time to the parishes and hope we will be able to continue to do so for at least a few more years.”
We truly appreciate their dedication and effort. We thank them for volunteering their time, talents and joyful service and may
God continue to bless them.
―O God, when I have food, help me to remember the hungry;
When I have work, help me to remember the jobless; When I have a home, help me to remember those who have no home at all; When I am without pain, help me to remember those
who suffer; And remembering, help me to destroy my complacency; Bestir my compassion,
And be concerned enough to help; By word and by deed, Those who cry out for what we take
for granted. Amen.‖
All Souls Day in November
This feast day is one of the most loving celebrations in all the Church's liturgy. It is the day that we especially remember all the faithful departed-those who have passed from this life into the next. We don't know
how long a particular individual who dies spends in purgatory. However, we do know that purgatory is real.
This month we remember all who have died. We especially pray for those who were related to us. We pray
for those who taught us good things. We pray for those who made sacrifices for us. We pray for those who
prayed for us while they were on this earth. We pray for the most forgotten souls. We pray for those who had great responsibilities while they were on earth.

Mission Statement: We, parishioners of St Ann Parish, are a Catholic faith community in the south end of Tacoma who
proclaim the Gospels and embrace our many cultures and the gifts we share. We come together as one faith community to
celebrate the Eucharist and the Sacraments. We are grateful to those who built this place of worship with faith, sacrifice and
sanctified it with their many years of devotion. We remain focused on our Roman Catholic traditions and promote an
environment of hope, where all can grow into the likeness of Christ.
It is at this time of year, that we are asked to think about our ‘stewardship’ of all those gifts that God has
placed in our trust, not just how we are taking care of those gifts, but how we are sharing those gifts, including with our parish. This future ‘focus’ on Parish Stewardship (over the coming weeks) asks us to consider are we ‘returning to the Lord’ through the Lord’s instrument on earth for the building up of the kingdom, the
church, a proper portion of the gifts God has placed in our care. Next Sunday we will be hearing from one of
our parishioners who will share with us a ‘Witness Presentation‘ – their story of how God has blessed them,
their gratefulness, and how they are sharing those blessings.

Stewardship Corner
Again, this year we are so blessed
with Teachers and helpers for our
Religious Education Program. There
are 63 students registered this year
from St. John’s. Classes began in
September and will continue through
the first of May (Blessed Mother
Mary’s tribute and crowning).
There were seven classes offered
this year: Pre-K, Kindergarten, 1st
grade, and 2nd grade have teachers &
helpers for each class. 3rd & 4th
grade, 5th & 6th grade, 7th & 8th
grade and older 1st Communion students have only teachers, and just
recently added to the program is preConfirmation class with teacher &
helper. During the school Year there
will be 3 children’s Masses where the
children are responsible for the Readings, Responsorial Psalm, Prayers of
the Faithful, Gift Bearers, Ushers, &
Altar Servers.
On December 27th (Saturday after
Christmas) there will be a Christmas
Pagent presented by the Religious
Education Children. The Pagent will
be in the Church at 4:00pm before
the 5:30pm Saturday evening Mass.
The parish Hall is being rented so the
scheduled Christmas Pagent will not
be in the parish hall as planned. Next
year we will be sure to have the Hall
available for this major event during
Christmastime. Please mark your
calendars as the time is coming fast!
We would like to express our
thanks to Sr. Theresa, the Teachers
and helpers for volunteering for this
very important program instructing
our children and for their future involvement in our Catholic Community.

fe) religión) Están cordialmente invitados a unirse a Misa semanalmente
