Bulletin - Cathedral of Christ the King

NOvEMber 2, 2014
All souls’ day
Dear Parishioners,
Christ the King’s 2015 Stewardship of Treasure Drive takes place this
weekend, November 1 and 2. A letter and pledge envelope were mailed to all
registered parishioners and extra pledge envelopes are available in the pews.
This is a time to make a commitment to return to God a portion of the many
blessings He has bestowed on us. It is a time to pray, reflect and make a
commitment to support Christ the King parish for the year 2015. Pledges are
fulfilled through donations to the parish offertory - whether they be through
the first collection at weekend Masses, through on-line donations or through
gifts of stock to the Cathedral.
2699 Peachtree Road, NE
Atlanta, Georgia 30305
404-233-2145

Please bring your completed pledge envelope to the Cathedral in the coming
weeks or mail it to the Church. It will take the financial efforts of each of us to
continue the mission of Christ the King parish – “To Know, Love and Serve as
Jesus Did”.

All Souls' Day is a day of prayer for the dead, particularly but not exclusively
one's relatives. In Western Christianity the annual celebration is now held on
November 2 and is associated with All Saints' Day (November 1) and its vigil,
Halloween (October 31). In the liturgical books of the western Catholic
Church (the Latin Church) it is called The Commemoration of All the Faithful
Departed, and is celebrated annually on November 2, even if this date falls on
a Sunday.
The readings and prayers for this celebration find their origins in our funeral
rite. It is one of the most beautiful and expressive in the Roman Missal and is
of very ancient origin. In pre-Apostolic times the Jews prayed that the
immortal souls of the just might have requiem aeternam (“rest eternal”), and
sources from the 2nd century mention this celebration of the Eucharist. All
Souls Day, the feast for the commemoration of the dead, was instituted by
Saint Odilo, fourth abbot of the famous Benedictine monastery at Cluny, in
998. In its actual form the Requiem Mass can be traced back to the 8th and 9th
centuries. The texts of the Mass, though ancient, continue as vital, living
expressions of consolation for the present and hope for the future.
The Cathedral will hold a Remembrance Mass on November 5. Please see Page
7 for details.

Christ the King is proud to sponsor the 2014 Adopt-AFamily Program. We hope you can take part in this
wonderful program that offers you the opportunity to share
your blessings with others. This is one way you can reach
out to those in need! We work with Catholic Charities, the
St. Vincent de Paul Society, and Hispanic Ministries. All
families participating in this program have been screened and are in need of your
help.
Hope to see you on site!
Here’s How It Works:
Once you have decided to adopt a family, please email the size family you would
like to adopt. You will then receive an information sheet via email on the family
you adopted.
The information sheet will include the names, ages and special requests of both
the parents and children.
Word of God
Charismatic Prayer
Group
Please join us from 7-8 pm each
Wednesday night for prayers of praise,
silent prayer, and intercession. We
meet in the nursery, just past the main
receptionist desk to the parish offices.
We begin promptly at 7 pm, so try to
arrive a few minutes before the
starting time. If you are going
through a difficult time and you need
the prayers of others, we offer such
prayers immediately after each
meeting. If you can not join us, but
you have a prayer need, you may
email us at [email protected].
You will also receive packing instructions, suggested gift items, and delivery
times.
We ask that you, the sponsor family, provide 2-3 gifts per family member and a
food gift certificate. We estimate $50 -$75 per family member plus the food gift
certificate.
All gifts need to be dropped off at the back of the Cathedral in the school
parking lot on Thursday, December 11 (4:30 -7:30 pm).
You may join us on Saturday, December 14 (12:30-2:30 pm) to distribute the
gifts to some of the families at the Cathedral in the back parking lot.
This year we will be looking for volunteers with SUV’s who could help on
Saturday to deliver gifts directly to individuals that have difficulty arranging
transportation. (At the time you request your family, please let us know if you can
help.)
You can help make the holidays a great time for those families less fortunate. The
Adopt-A-Family program is a way to get your entire family involved in sharing
your many blessings with those in need. Last year, the program helped over 950
families throughout Metro Atlanta. We hope to exceed that amount this year.
Thank you for considering adopting a family this year and helping us reach our
parish goal of 400 families.
There are two family sizes – Small (families with 2-4 family members including
parents) and Large (families with 5 or more members including parents)
For those interested in adopting a family or if you have specific questions about
the program, email your request to the following:

Queridas familias,
