In his convocation address,
Rush said, “I have been privileged
to serve as the president of CSU
Channel Islands and I'm honored,
more than I can say, to have held
in trust—for the once and future
students and the good people of
Ventura County and the region—
this marvelous idea of a university.
Over the past 15 years, I have been
honored to work with innovative
faculty and staff, creative students,
and engaged alumni. In addition,
I am tremendously grateful for
the support that the university has
received from the community.”
As the first president of CSU
Channel Islands, Rush hired the
faculty and senior administrative
team, oversaw the creation and
implementation of the university’s strategic, academic, fiscal
and physical plant master plans,
as well as the infrastructure, road
improvements and the acquisition
of land for campus expansion. He
also led the university’s efforts
to achieve initial accreditation
from the Western Association of
Schools and Colleges, as well as
the most recent re-accreditation of
the university.
“President Rush will forever
be memorialized for his role in
establishing and building the reputation of our newest campus,”
said CSU Chancellor Timothy P.
White. “He is leaving a lasting
and living legacy of academic
excellence that has not only made
CSU Channel Islands the campus
of choice for graduating high
school seniors and community college transfer students in Ventura
County but also across the state. I
credit President Rush’s character,
charisma and passion for students
and learning for the caring culture
at CSU Channel Islands. He has
fostered a strong collegial spirit
supported by a deep commitment
to shared governance. His involvement in the community, coupled
with the strategic partnerships that
he has initiated and nurtured, will
benefit many future generations of
students. I will personally miss his
wit, optimism and sound counsel
as we have worked together to
expand access to underserved
students and increase degree completion rates.”
Rush built the academic program and helped the campus bring
in more than $16.4 million in federal grants, expanding outreach and
access to underserved students
in the region. During his tenure,
the campus was also designated
as a Hispanic Serving Institution,
(with more 25 percent of its students self-identifying as Latinos)
making the campus eligible for
federal funding. One hallmark of
his 15-year tenure as president is
the number of strategic partnerships he forged to expand research
opportunities for faculty and
undergraduate students. Through
his work with local community
colleges and K-12 school districts,
he has worked to support increased high school graduation and
college admission rates.
Rush has also actively worked
with the business community to
ensure the relevancy of the curriculum and expand internships and
service learning opportunities for
students. He created a partnership
with Cottage Hospital to offer the
first bachelor’s degree of nursing
program in Santa Barbara County.
With the Channel Islands National
Park, he launched the Santa Rosa
Island Research Station to expand
undergraduate research across various academic disciplines. In concert with a Nobel Peace prize laureate, he established the California
Institute for Social Business to
foster social enterprise efforts and
expand service learning opportunities for undergraduate students.
Moreover, he has helped the campus garner nearly $49 million in
contributions to support student
scholarships, micro-grants for
research and scholarly activity for
faculty, and academic programs.
Rush has been recognized
for his leadership and character
with many national and regional
awards. Beloved by students,
Rush was twice named the President of the Year by the California

Meanwhile, another passerby,
Bill Vazquez, said that Mexico
is entitled to ask for a passport
as we do to foreign nationals
entering the United States.
"I do not know that they were
about to ask for passports, but I
understand their motives, I just
hope that after a while the rows
don’t get longer," he said.

ruling out endorsing one of the
candidates in the 2016 Democratic presidential primaries,
White House spokesman Josh
Earnest said.
"I wouldn't rule out the possibility of an endorsement in the
Democratic primary," Earnest
said, adding that - regardless
of who he might endorse in the
primaries - whoever winds up
being the Democratic presidential nominee will enjoy the
president's full support.
Earnest was responding to a
question about reports that Vice
President Joe Biden may decide
to mount a presidential campaign
for the third time in his life, having
made bids for the party's nomination in 1988 and 2008.
If Biden decides to run - something that he is said to be considering but about which he had made
no public decision as yet - this
would constitute a very serious
challenge to former Secretary of
State Hillary Clinton, the current
front-runner for the Democratic
nomination.
Both Biden and Clinton competed against Obama for the 2008
Democratic nomination, but
they wound up serving in key
posts in his administration, respectively as vice president and
secretary of state, although the
former first lady stepped down
from that post in 2013.
If both Biden and Clinton run in
the primaries, Obama will find
himself torn between supporting his loyal vice president or
the party's current front-runner.

Rush came to CSU Channel
Islands from Minnesota State
University, Mankato, where he
spent nine years as president. He
was specially chosen to build the
newest CSU campus given his
experience—he played a key role
in the founding of CSU San Marcos, where he served as the vice
president-in-charge, and later as
the executive vice president. Prior
to that time, he was a professor of
English Literature, director and
dean at San Diego State University, North County, which later became CSU San Marcos. He began
his career in higher education at
San Diego State, where he was an
assistant and associate professor.
Rush holds a bachelor’s in
classics, English and philosophy
from Gonzaga University and a
master’s in English literature, as
well as a Ph.D. in English renaissance literature, from University
of California, Los Angeles. He
also attended the Institute for Educational Management at Harvard
University.
In the coming months, the CSU
Board of Trustees will begin a
national search to select a new
campus president.

Exhibit explores local’s
Mixtec origins

Paintings that explore an Oxnard resident’s Mixtec origins
are on display through Sept. 26 at
California Lutheran University.
A reception for “Hüicho!”,
which features art by Hüicho
Lé, will be held at 7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 4, in the Kwan Fong
Gallery of Art and Culture on the
Thousand Oaks campus.
Lé combines contemporary
imagery with themes and colors from indigenous Mexico.
He paints to bring respect and
honor to his people and to build
bridges. His paintings depict the
beauty he sees in his life, with an
emphasis on family and friends.
Born to immigrant farmworkers in Watsonville and raised
in Oxnard as a member of the
community of Mixtecs from the
Mexican state of Oaxaca, Lé
has loved creating art since his
kindergarten teacher asked him
to make a tempura painting.
After high school, he joined
the Marines. A sergeant in an
infantry division, he served
two tours in and
near Iraq as a
machine gunner.
After he returned home,
drawing and
painting helped
him cope with
post-traumatic
stress disorder
and a traumatic brain injury.
In particular,
painting self-portraits allowed
him slow down and focus on
healing mentally and physically.
Through the GI Bill, Lé graduated from The Art Institute of
California - Los Angeles with a
bachelor’s degree in multimedia
and animation. Later, he attended
Cal Lutheran through the Yellow
Ribbon Program and completed
bachelor’s degrees in art and
Spanish in 2012. With the mentorship of associate professor of
art and Kwan Fong Gallery curator Michael Pearce, Lé gained

took executive action to expand
an existing program and establish
a new one that would offer work
permits and deportation relief to
an estimated 5 million unauthorized immigrants. The actions
- which are on hold because of
a lawsuit by 26 states - would be
open to unauthorized immigrants
who were brought to the U.S.
illegally as children, or who are
parents with a child who is a U.S.
citizen or legal permanent resident, as long as they meet certain
requirements.

An estimated 11.3 million unauthorized immigrants lived in
the U.S. in 2014, according to a
new preliminary Pew Research
Center estimate based on government data. This population has
remained essentially stable for
five years after nearly two decades
of changes.
The recent overall stability
contrasts with past trends. The
unauthorized immigrant population had risen rapidly during the
1990s and early 2000s, from an
estimated 3.5 million in 1990 to
a peak of 12.2 million in 2007.
It then dropped sharply during
the Great Recession of 2007-09,
mainly because of a decrease in
immigration from Mexico.
The overall estimate has fluctuated little in recent years because
the number of new unauthorized
immigrants is roughly equal to the
number who are deported, leave
the U.S. on their own, convert to
legal status, or (in a small number
of cases) die, according to the Pew
Research analysis. The new unauthorized immigrant total includes
people who cross the border illegally as well as those who arrive
with legal visas and remain in the
U.S. after their visas expire.
Pew Research estimates that,
since 2009, there has been an
average of about 350,000 new
unauthorized immigrants each
year. Of these, about 100,000 are
Mexican, a much smaller share

78 años de casados: La pareja
casada por más tiempo
¿Quién puede decir que es nieta
de una pareja que ha cumplido 78
años de casados? ¿Quién puede
decir que conoce a alguien que
tenga tantos años de casado?
Dicen que con tantos divorcios,
hoy en día puede ser difícil poder
conocer o encontrar a una pareja
con estas cualidades. Sin embargo,
Mary Ann Edwards y su familia
puede afirmar todo lo contrario.
El domingo, 16 de agosto, la
familia de Mary Ann Edwards
tuvo una celebración muy especial
en la Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de
Guadalupe en Oxnard, en la que
ella y su familia celebraron los
setenta y ocho años de casados de
sus abuelos, Jesús y Soledad Hernández. A esta celebración asistieron cinco generaciones diferentes
ya que Jesús y Soledad tienen 7
hijos, 18 nietos, 26 bisnietos y 11
tataranietos quienes expresaron
tener una gran felicidad de poder
tenerles todavía. Una de sus nie-
tas, Mary Ann Edwards dijo que
es una verdadera bendición poder
compartir con ellos y el tenerles
en la familia. La familia se sentía
llena de emoción y felicidad de
compartir un momento como este.
Jesús y Soledad han vido en Oxnard la gran mayoría de sus vidas
y son originarios de Puruandiro
y Janamuato Michoacán respectivamente.
El Señor Jesús cumplió 100
años de edad el pasado 13 de agos-
to y es el mayor de 7 hermanos y
la Señora Soledad cumplirá 98
años el 17 de septiembre y es una
de cinco hijos. Marylou Sandoval,
quien es la hija menor de Jesús y
Soledad y madre de Mary Ann, comentó que a la celebración asistie-
ron amigos y familiares de todas
partes de California y México, por
ejemplo Palm Springs, el Condado
de Orange, Mexicali y Tijuana. El
Obispo (retirado) Jesús Madera
fue quien celebró la misa y comentaron que es un amigo cercano de
la familia. Javier y Dolores Ocho
se sienten muy orgullosos de poder haber sido padrinos de sus 75
años de casados. La Señora Ochoa
dijo que es un orgullo y algo muy
especial porque nadie espera ser
padrino de alguien que tenga
tantos años de casado. Asimismo,
mencionó que la linda pareja fue
reconocida en mayo pasado por la
Marriage Wealth y por el mismo
presidente Obama quien les envió
una carta de felicitaciones por
cumplir tantos años de casados,
al igual que el Papá Francisco.
También fueron reconocidos por
el Condado ya que son la pareja
que más años llevan de casados
y se les reconoció en la Feria de
Ventura. Después de la misa, la
familia siguió con la celebración
en el Elks Club de Oxnard, donde
celebraron en grande el hecho de
tener a esta feliz pareja casada por
ya más de 78 años.

La obesidad en los tejidos
favorece el cáncer de mama
Las células precancerosas que crecen en tejidos grasosos tienen más probabilidades
de convertirse en un tumor maligno que las que crecen en tejidos con menos grasa.
El efecto de la obesidad en los
tejidos de los pechos favorece el
desarrollo del cáncer de mama,
del que ya se sabía que era un
factor de riesgo para esta enfermedad, según un estudio publicado
en la revista "Science Translational Medicine".
El incremento de la rigidez en
los tejidos de grasa de las mamas
modifica la comunicación química entre las células y esto favo-

jóvenes "ni-ni" de raza blanca, el
porcentaje fue en 2014 superior
al de los niveles previos a la recesión, al pasar del 10% de entre
2004 y 2007 al 12% de 2014.
La mejora del dato entre los
jóvenes hispanos se explica
principalmente porque la caída
del desempleo fue más rápida
entre latinos que entre blancos
o afroamericanos, al pasar del
32% de 2010 al 19% en 2014
entre aquellos de edades comprendidas entre 16 y 19 años.
Además, más hispanos que
nunca se matriculan en centros
de educación superior y universidades, mientras que los índices
de fracaso escolar en secundaria
han caído a su mínimo histórico.
Un alto porcentaje de "ni-ni"
es visto como un preocupante
adelanto de personas con persistente desempleo o condenadas
a trabajos mal remunerados y
con pocas garantías de mejora
económica.
Son menos los jovenes que
ni estudian ni trabajan
rece el crecimiento de tumores,
según concluye la investigación,
elaborada por expertos de tres
instituciones de Estados Unidos.
Los científicos estudiaron el tejido mamario de personas obesas
y de personas con peso sano, así
como tejidos mamarios de ratones
con obesidad.
En la investigación, algunos ratones a los que se les puso a dieta
experimentaron la desaparición
de algunos de esos efectos, pero
esto no se ha comprobado con
personas.
Los científicos determinaron
que las células precancerosas que
crecen en tejidos grasos tienen
más probabilidades de convertirse en un tumor maligno que las
células que crecen en tejidos con
menos grasa.
El diagnóstico para las pacientes con cáncer de mama que son
obesas suele ser peor que para el
de las mujeres que tienen un peso
normal.
Sin embargo, muy pocos tratamientos contra el cáncer de mama
están dirigidos especialmente a
las mujeres con obesidad.
De ahí, sostiene esta investigación, la importancia de conocer
lo que sucede a nivel celular para
poder desarrollar tratamientos
más efectivos.
Los responsables del estudio
proceden de las universidades
Cornell University y Weill Cornell Medical College y el centro
de investigación del cáncer Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer
Center, todos ellos situados en
Nueva York.

Ramón Ayala hará una colaboración
con el reguetonero Daddy Yankee
Ramón Ayala confesó además que le gustaría trabajar con Paquita la del Barrio y con el grupo
Voz de Mando, con quienes también ya ha tenido varios acercamientos.
El acordeonista mexicano Ramón Ayala aseguró que entre sus
próximos proyectos se encuentra
una participación especial con el
reguetonero puertorriqueño Daddy Yankee.
"Tengo un tema para él y muy
pronto lo grabaremos juntos", dijo
el conocido músico mexicano en
rueda de prensa.
Ayala, abierto siempre a cualquier tipo de fusión, se mostró
feliz de poder colaborar con Daddy Yankee, quien curiosamente
también se llama Ramón Luis
Ayala Rodríguez.
El acordeonista confesó además
que le gustaría trabajar con Paquita la del Barrio y con el grupo Voz
de Mando, con quienes también ya
ha tenido varios acercamientos.
El reconocido "rey del acordeón" se mostró muy satisfecho
con los logros que ha tenido a lo
largo de su vida artística y comentó que no ha pensado en el retiro
y de manera categoría aseguró:
"Mientras tenga salud, seguiré
adelante".
Dijo que ya está preparando una
película en la cual abordará varios
de los momentos y situaciones con
los que se ha enfrentado en estas
cinco décadas de trayectoria.
"Esta película será de mi vida,
desde que era chiquillo y comencé a tocar el acordeón. También
abordaré la época en la que formé
parte del grupo Los Relámpagos
del Norte".
Asimismo, la cinta incluirá
algunos de los momentos desagradables por los que ha atravesado,
como cuando fallecieron sus padres y no pudo estar con ellos por
"motivos de trabajo".
Ramón Ayala es uno de los principales exponentes de la música
norteña, género musical que ha
visto cómo en los últimos tiempos
los espacios para su difusión se
han visto reducidos debido al gran
número de bandas sinaloenses que
están surgiendo.
Este hecho ha generado competencia entre ambas corrientes
musicales del género regional
mexicano, aunque Ramón Ayala
se mostró confiado en el futuro de
la música norteña.
"La música norteña no es de
ahora ni de ayer, es de muchos
años. Las nuevas generaciones se
inspiran con nuestra música y así
seguirá siendo. La música norteña
tiene su lugar", dijo.
El intérprete destacó que muchos grupos surgieron gracias a
la influencia de su música: "Intocable se hizo con mi música y su
primer éxito fue un tema de mi
hermano. En este género, yo he
sido padrino de muchos artistas
como Invasores de Nuevo León,
Barón de Apodaca y Carlos y
José".
Ramón Ayala actualmente promueve su 113 producción discográfica, disco que lleva por
título "Como el topo", del que se
desprende el sencillo homónimo.
Paralelamente, el artista está
lanzando al mercado la marca
de tequila "Tragos amargos", en
referencia al popular éxito de su
repertorio musical.
Ganador del Grammy y Grammy Latino, Ramón Ayala actuará
el 11 de septiembre en Las Vegas
(Nevada) para continuar al día
siguiente en Coachela (California)
y un día más tarde en Madera, en
el mismo estado.

Hallan 350 monedas de oro
valoradas en 4.5 millones
Submarinistas de una compañía "cazatesoros" de Florida han
recuperado del fondo marino de
Vero Beach, en la costa este del
estado, 350 monedas de oro valoradas en 4.5 millones de dólares y
procedentes de un galeón español
de principios del siglo XVIII,
informó la empresa.
Menos de un mes después de
que una familia recuperara, utilizando un detector de metales, 60
monedas de oro valoradas en más
de un millón de dólares, la compañía 1715 Fleet-Queens Jewels,
poseedora de los derechos sobre
varios lugares del naufragio de la
llamada Flota Española de 1715,
ha hecho el anuncio de este nuevo
hallazgo.
"Unas 350 monedas de oro,
incluidos nueve reales valorados
cada uno en 300,000 dólares, fue-
ron recuperadas los pasados 30 y
31 de julio", señala la compañía en
su web, donde también aparecen
fotografías de los submarinistas
exhibiendo las monedas.
El tesoro está compuesto por
"cientos de escudos, doblones y
reales" que formaban parte del
cargamento de oro que transportaba la Flota Española de 1715,
que zarpó desde La Habana rumbo a España, pero once naves se
hundieron en las costas de Florida
debido a un huracán que se cobró
la vida de un millar de personas.
Una parte del oro, la plata y
otros objetos que quedaron diseminados por el suelo marino fueron recuperados tras la tormenta,
pero los historiadores y "cazatesoros" creen que millones de dólares
en plata y oro permanecen todavía
en el fondo del mar.
Los arqueólogos mexicanos hallaron un altar de cráneos prehispánico denominado "Huey Tzompantli" de Tenochtitlán en
el Centro Histórico de la Ciudad de México.

Arqueólogos mexicanos hallaron un altar de cráneos prehispánico en el Centro Histórico de la
Ciudad de México, denominado
"Huey Tzompantli" de Tenochtitlán, reveló el Instituto Nacional de
Antropología e Historia (INAH).
El altar aparece en dibujos del
Códice Durán y en el Códice Matritense, los cuales corresponden
a la segunda mitad del siglo XVI
de la Nueva España.
El primero, que relata la historia
de los mexicas, fue escrito por
el fraile dominico Diego Durán,
mientras que el segundo reúne
parte de la investigación etnográfica que realizó fray Bernardino
de Sahagún.
"El interés de este hallazgo radica en que las fuentes históricas
nos mencionan y hacen alusión al
tzompantli y su función", dijo el
arqueólogo Eduardo Matos, uno
de los encargados de la investigación.
Recordó que el tzomplantli "era
una estructura cuya función era
