The 2015 Annual Catholic Appeal is “Called to be
Merciful” appeal. As disciples we are called to trust in
Jesus’ mercy. Jesus invites us to recognize him in the
poor, in those that suffer, and in those in need. We
encounter God’s love when we express mercy and
compassion, through stewardship, service, and sacrifice.
We are called to know Christ and sent to make him
known. The Annual Catholic Appeal supports service to
the poor and imprisoned, education for children in
Catholic schools and training of catechists, formation of
candidates for the priesthood, ministry to our youth and to
young people on university campuses, preparation of
couples for marriage, and support for parish development
in Imperial Valley. Please be generous and support our
parish and our diocese. Envelopes can be turned into the
Parish Office or dropped in the collection basket. Thank

Dear Friends,
“Early on the first day of the week, while it was still dark, Mary Magdalene went to the tomb
and saw that the stone had been removed from the entrance” (John 20:1).
Why did Mary Magdalene visit the tomb of Christ? Was it simply an act of sight-seeing? St
John doesn't tell us why, but the other Gospels tell us that the women went to anoint the body
of Jesus. They were taking the first opportunity to do so once the Sabbath had ended.
It was no act of curiosity, but an act of love. Mary Magdalen’s love for Jesus did not die when
he died on the cross. Like all true love, Mary's love drives her to serve the one she loves in the
only way she now can: by an act of tender reverence towards the body of Jesus.
It is love also that impels us Christians not only to pray for those who have died, but also to give
them a respectful funeral, to tend their graves, and to long for the day when we shall be with
them again. We Christians do not pretend that death is nothing. It is a profound tragedy, but
love is stronger and deeper than any tragedy.
Mary discovers the hard truth that stands at the core of our faith: He is not there. He has
risen.
Mary does not yet understand the significance of the empty tomb. She fears that his body has
been stolen. Her act of loving reverence for the body of Jesus will be frustrated. Her love
seems to have encountered a dead end. But we know what will happen next. She will encounter
the risen Christ in the garden, and he will call her by her name, and she will at last recognize
him. When this happens, she will know that her love for Christ is not ended but just beginning
again.
It is not that Jesus's body no longer matters. It matters all the more. Now this living, risen
body will be eternally life-giving. The oils and spices Mary brought with her to anoint his dead
body can now be left behind. The loving service that Mary Magdalene must now offer to the
body of Christ is one of apostleship. Not for nothing is Mary Magdalene called the ‘Apostle to
the Apostles’.
“Go and find my brothers and tell them.” The risen Christ calls Mary to a new act of loving
service. We also are called today and every day to go and find Christ's brothers and sisters and
to tell them that He is risen from the dead.
We must tell our brothers and sisters of the empty tomb. It matters that God so loved the world
that he sent his only Son to die on the cross. It matters that Christ was buried in that tomb two
thousand years ago. And it matters that the same tomb was empty on the morning of the third
day.
It matters because it is the ultimate proof that that there is one thing stronger than death. Love
is stronger than death. Easter is eternal. My Easter prayer for your all is that no challenge or
difficulty, not even death itself, will separate you from the love God in Christ Jesus. May that
love be in your hearts and minds now and for all eternity.

“Y el primer día de la semana María Magdalena fue temprano al sepulcro, cuando todavía estaba
oscuro, y vio que ya la piedra había sido quitada del sepulcro” (Juan 20:1).
¿Por qué María Magdalena visitó la tumba de Cristo? ¿Fue esto simplemente una visita? San Juan
no nos dice por qué, pero los otros Evangelios nos dicen que las mujeres fueron a ungir el cuerpo
de Jesús. Ellas tomaron la primera oportunidad de hacerlo cuando el sábado había terminado.
Este no fue un acto de curiosidad, sino un acto de amor. El amor de María Magdalena por Jesús no
murió cuando Él murió en la cruz. Como todo verdadero amor, el amor de María la lleva a servir a
su amado en la única forma que ella puede ahora: por un acto de tierna reverencia hacia el cuerpo
de Jesús.
Es el amor el que nos impulsa también a nosotros los cristianos no solamente a orar por quienes
han fallecido, sino también a darles un funeral respetuoso, a cuidar sus tumbas y anhelar el día
cuando estemos con ellos nuevamente. Nosotros los cristianos no pretendamos que la muerte no es
nada. Es una profunda tragedia, pero el amor es más fuerte y profundo que cualquier tragedia.
María descubre la dura realidad que se presenta en el corazón de nuestra fe: Él no esta allí. Él ha
resucitado.
María aún no entiende el significado de una tumba vacía. Ella teme que su cuerpo haya sido
robado. Su acto de reverencia amorosa por el cuerpo de Jesús se verá frustrado. Su amor parece
haber encontrado un final sin salida. Pero nosotros sabemos lo que pasará después. Ella se
encontrará con el Cristo resucitado en el jardín, y Él la llamará por su nombre, y ella por fin lo
reconocerá. Cuando esto pase, ella sabrá que su amor por Cristo no ha terminado sino apenas
empezado de nuevo.
No es que el cuerpo de Jesús ya no importe. Importa tanto más. Ahora en esta vida, el cuerpo
resucitado será eternamente vivificante. Los aceites y las especias que María trajo para ungir su
cadáver pueden ahora ser dejadas atrás. El servicio amoroso que María Magdalena debe ahora
ofrecer al cuerpo de Cristo es un apostolado. No en vano es María Magdalena llamada el “Apóstol
de los Apóstoles”.
“Ve y encuentra a mis hermanos y diles”. El Cristo resucitado llama a María a un nuevo acto de
servicio amoroso. También estamos llamados hoy y cada día para ir y encontrar a los hermanos y
hermanas de Cristo y decirles que Él esta resucitado de la muerte.
Debemos decirles a nuestros hermanos y hermanas acerca de la tumba vacía. Importa que Dios
amó tanto al mundo que envío a su único Hijo para morir en la cruz. Importa que Cristo fue
enterrado en esa tumba hace dos mil años. E importa que la misma tumba estuviera vacía en la
mañana del tercer día.
Esto importa porque es la prueba definitiva de que hay una cosa más fuerte que la muerte. El amor
es más fuerte que la muerte. La Pascua es eterna. Mi oración de Pascua para todos ustedes es que
ningún reto o dificultad, ni incluso la muerte misma, los separará del amor de Dios en Cristo Jesús.
Que el amor esté en sus corazones y sus mentes ahora y por toda la eternidad.
