Danny Villanueva was the
kicker for the Los Angeles Rams
in the early 1960s and worked
on the side as a sportscaster at
KNBC Channel 4 and KMEX
Channel 34, at the time LA's
only Spanish-language television station. After he retired
from the NFL he became the
news director at KMEX. Villanueva hired the station's first
field reporter, rose to president of
KMEX and later had a role in the
founding of Spanish-language
media giant Univision. Along
the way, he became wealthy
and gave a lot of money back
to many communities in several
states, including many Ventura
County’s non profits organizations like El Concilio, Destino
2000, Ventura County Community Foundation to name a few.
Villanueva died last Thursday at Ventura County Medical
Center of complications from
a stroke that he had the week
before. He was 77.

Danny Villanueva
came the flagship of the Spanish
International Communications
Corp., the precursor to the national
Univision network. Villanueva
was part-owner of Univision when
Hallmark Cards bought a majority
stake in the network in 1988 for
more than $260 million.
"It just goes to show you how
much the Hispanic market has
grown," Villanueva told the Miami Herald in 2002. "It's one of
the great American stories."
During Villanueva's tenure,
KMEX went from a niche operation to a cultural force in Los
Angeles.
Born in Tucamcari, New Mexico to migrant missionaries,
Villanueva grew up mostly in
Calexico and graduated from
New Mexico State University
in Las Cruces.
Villanueva, who lived in
Somis for many years, was a
longtime booster for his alma
mater, having donated several
million dollars to the university.
Danny Villanueva was an outstanding man, a great football
player and a generous philanthropist. He came from a small
town in New Mexico and rose
to become a very successful
entrepreneur in both television
and real estate.
Villanueva co-founded the
investment firm Bastion Capital
in 1992 and co-founded Rustic
Canyon/Fontis Partners, an investment firm aimed at helping
family businesses.
In 1991, he established the
Danny Villanueva Scholarship
Endowment to recognize students who excel in leadership
and community involvement.

OPINION
"Jeb, Marco and the Donald"
By Raoul Lowery Contreras
What a week of contrasts in
American Presidential politics.
The bright side includes Jeb Bush
and Marco Rubio; then there is
ignorant bigotry. The bigotry burst
forth from the Black Hole of bigotry, that is, the mind of self-described “billionaire” Donald “The
Donald” Trump.
First, Miami-based Jeb Bush
pulled out all stops to make his
long-awaited formal announcement for the Republican Presidential nomination at Miami-Dade
College.

became one of them, he also became a Catholic making the “leap”
from his Yankee White Anglo

to join the hundreds of millions
of Latin Americans who are born
into the Church.
He also appeals to these Hispanics because as Florida’s governor,
the “Education” governor, he set
out to raise the educational level
of Black and Hispanic kids. It
worked. Florida Black and Hispanic kids led the nation under
Bush. He also implemented – despite teacher union lawsuits – a
school voucher that poor Black
and Hispanic kids can utilize to
attend better schools.
The crowd roared and standing
ovations, one after another, became frenzied when he switched

Bush but he was one of them.
The week ended with native-son
U.S. Senator Marco Rubio when
he showed up with his wife and
four children to the annual Lincoln
Day Dinner of the Miami-Dade
Republican Party. Miami-Dade
Republican Chairman Nelson
Diaz had invited Marco to address
the dinner a year ago, long before
Rubio set his candidacy for President in motion.
This was a rip-roaring sold-out
rubber chicken GOP fund-raising
dinner that turned out to be an
emotional collective endorsement of a home town boy that six
months ago was considered to be
a light-weight long shot for the
Republican nomination.
Marco Rubio lit up the ballroom.
Every single Cuban American in
the room roared their appreciation
for their “paisano,” even if they
support an old friend, Jeb Bush.

Marco! Marco! They chanted.
He joked about the New York
Times’ exposing his “luxury
speedboat” that masquerades
as “a fishing boat;” the crowd
laughed. He regaled them with:
He was one of them and like
them gave his parent’s credit for
coming to America with nothing
and building an American family
from which one is now running
for President of the U.S.A. Marco!
Marco!
Sure, Rubio gave a mostly
stump speech as did his friend Jeb
Bush a few days earlier. But those
speeches work when delivered
honestly and passionately.
Sandwiched between Bush’s
announcement and Rubio’s Miami speech, crafted as they were
for crowds heavily peopled with
Hispanic supporters and activists,
was the 45-minute Donald Trump
announcement that he was rich.
He also stated that he was smarter
than anyone who has ever “negotiated” a deal for the United States;
over and over he told us he was
“really rich.”
Like long-ago Senator Joe McCarthy and his famous “list of
known State Department Communists” that he never showed anyone, Trump brandished a piece
of paper around that he claimed
proved he was rich. Who has seen
that piece of paper that “proves”
Trump is rich?
Boorishly bragging that he is
“really rich” is one thing; Trump
always does that. What’s new is
his declaration that Mexico is our
enemy, that he will build a “Great
Wall” along the entire border to
end Mexico’s exploitation of the
United States. Not only that but
he would “make Mexico pay for
the wall.”
He told Fox’s Sean Hannity that
Mexico was not “sending us their
best.” Mexico, Trump claims, is
sending us drug people, murderers
and rapists, implying that that is
all Mexico sends us; no oil, no
cars, no air planes, no car parts,
no construction cement, no fruits
and vegetables, no seafood, no flat
screen TVs or more than 500,000
farmworkers who produce much
of our food. He ignores the fact
that as many as 14 million or more
Americans work in trade with or
from Mexico and Canada or in
manufacturing of cars ($20 billion
worth to Mexico alone in 2012)
and myriad products for sale to
Mexico ($240 billion in 2012,
15% of all U.S. Exports). U.S.
government stats, folks.
He would put an end to all that
with his “wall that Mexico will
pay for.”
Trump has teased us before
with political buffoonery but he
has never run for President. If he
does now, given Jeb Bush and
Marco Rubio, Hispanics have an
opportunity to help bury Trump
and “Trumpies” with ridicule,
for good.
Trump will never be nominated.
On the bright side, Bush or Rubio
can be.

) California Lutheran University
ohas received $2.28 million from
,the estate of an alumna’s parents
.to advance programs in three fields
that were important to the family
t– ministry, science and education.
l Darlene and Wilbert Carlson,
Camarillo residents who died in
e2013 and 2014 at the ages of 84 and
85, respectively, left $1.4 million to
eestablish an endowed chair in youth and family ministry, $584,700
ntoward the construction of a new
pscience building, $300,000 for a
summer research program in chemistry and $40,000 for an endowed
scholarship for aspiring teachers.
The $1.4 million gift provides
an endowment to help pay the ongoing cost of a faculty member to
lead the youth and family ministry
specialization within the theology
and Christian leadership degree
program. The program, currently
led by assistant professor of religion Colleen Windham-Hughes,
was launched six years ago in
response to demand for professionals to lead church programs. The
Carlsons were charter members of
Mount Cross Lutheran Church in
Camarillo.
The science center donation will
help the university eventually build
a facility that will connect to the
current Ahmanson Science Center. The new building will house
additional labs and classrooms for
the growing number of students
studying biology, chemistry, environmental science and exercise
science.
The $300,000 gift will enable
Cal Lutheran to reach its goal of
raising $1 million to establish an
endowed John Stauffer Research
Fellows Program in Chemical
Sciences. The John Stauffer Cha-
ritable Trust pledged a challenge
grant of $500,000, and the university has now raised the matching
donations required. The endowment will provide fellowships to
about 10 students each summer to
conduct original research full time
for eight weeks with mentoring
from faculty. It will also cover
travel costs for the students to present their research at professional
conferences.
Will Carlson’s focus within
the sciences was aerospace engineering. He graduated from the
Northrop Institute of Technology
and worked his way into upper management in the aerospace industry
in the San Diego area. In 1967, he
began working at Northrop Corp.
in Newbury Park and the family
moved to Camarillo. He retired
as the manager of manufacturing
and engineering in 1988. Darlene
Carlson worked for an electronics
manufacturing company and an
aluminum production shop.

mudarse a California y completar
su diploma. Enseguida vino Monica Carol Muñoz, quien puso
Ana Kelsey, estudiante venezolana
no dar marcha atrás, y aceptar
educativos superiores, o a puestos
laborales mejor pagados y más
prestigiosos.

Martin Luther King Jr., quien

a varios jóvenes. Asimismo, ella
menciono que se tiene que seguir
cambiando la vida de cada joven,
al igual que seguir educando a la
comunidad y seguir haciendo lo
que les corresponde hacer, que
hagan escuchar su voz por lo que
creen que es justo. El abogado
Gallardo, dio testimonio de cómo
DACA ha cambiado la vida de
varios individuos.
gracias a DACA varias familias
no fueron separadas. Cuando él
piensa en el éxito de DACA piensa
específicamente en la manera en
qué la vida de cada individuo ha
sido impactada. Asimismo, dio
