We welcome to our St. Clement of Rome family
our newly baptized member: Mariana Lucia
Mendieta, daughter of Jhonatan and Ana Mendieta.
Many people have been on our prayer list for a long
time and may have already had their prayers
answered or are no longer in need of remaining on
the list. If you want your name or a family
member’s name that you placed on the prayer list to
remain, please contact the Parish Center. Starting
with the July 5th bulletin, all names will be
removed except for those we have heard from. In
the future, names will remain on the prayer list for
a period of 6 months unless you request otherwise.
This will allow us to have room to add new
intentions.
FIRST FRIDAY SACRED HEART DEVOTIONS

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION
The premier poet of the English language, Geoffrey
Chaucer, introduced one of his most beloved characters, the “Wife of Bath,” by this telling remark:
“Husbands at church door she had five.” Four times
widowed, she was setting off on a pilgrimage, notably
without number five. The church door is a curious
detail, pointing to the fourteenth-century wedding
custom of marrying on the porch of the parish church.
The goal was to give maximum publicity to the consent of the groom and bride, and so consent was
moved from the bride’s home to a public venue. The
priest would stand in the doorway and begin by sprinkling the couple with holy water. He needed to make
sure they weren’t too closely related and give them
some instruction. He would direct the groom to pay
the bride’s family a dowry, and then announce the
monetary amounts to the interested passersby. Only
then would the guests enter the church for the wedding Mass, during which the bride and groom would
hold lighted candles. The gradual move from home to
church and the shift from the bride’s father to the
priest’s authority helped to protect the freedom of
brides who weren’t quite as confident as the Wife of
Bath.

Living Stewardship Now
Physical illness is not always the worst that can happen to a person. Pray that sick friends, family members,
and parishioners may “touch the hem of Jesus’ garment” and be healed in ways they need it most.

Jesús le pregunta tres veces: Peter, do you love me?
Pedro le responde: Lord, you know that I love you,
nuestra vida.

WHY IS IT
A man wakes up after sleeping
under an ADVERTISED blanket
on an ADVERTISED mattress
and pulls off ADVERTISED pajamas
bathes in an ADVERTISED shower
shaves with an ADVERTISED razor
brushes his teeth
with ADVERTISED toothpaste
washes with ADVERTISED soap
puts on ADVERTISED clothes
drinks a cup
of ADVERTISED coffee
drives to work
in an ADVERTISED car
and then . . . .
refuses to ADVERTISE
believing it doesn’t pay.
Later if business is poor
he ADVERTISES it for sale.
