Pastor’s Letter
August 8/9
Letter from the Finance
Council
Dear Fellow Sacred Hearts Parishioners, Summer Friends, and Visitors,
Over the past two weeks our Pastor, Fr. Mike Vetrano, has been communicating with the parish community
about the important need to smooth out the wide swings in weekly collections. If you saw the graph in the
bulletin two weeks ago, you saw the hills and valleys of our weekly income from Sunday collections. These
unpredictable swings make it very difficult for us, the Finance Committee of Sacred Hearts Parish, and Fr. Mike,
to put together a budget each year - much less to plan for new ministry initiatives.
Equally important to smoothing out our income, is the critical need for each of us to plan our weekly giving in
advance. Many parishioners have made a concerted effort to regularly support Sacred Hearts on a weekly basis
year-round at a level that is in keeping with their means. For this we are most grateful. However, some of us
may put little thought into our weekly giving and are more reactive at collection time than is perhaps ideal. This
has the potential of resulting in a gift for which the church is very grateful, but a gift that may not reflect the
priority one places in their faith.
Each year we are able to balance our budget but can only do so marginally. The difference between ending the
year with a positive fund balance and a negative fund balance is sometimes only one or two week’s worth of
collections. This greatly hampers, indeed prohibits, us from beginning initiatives to reach out to our elderly,
homebound, and youth as well as initiatives to make Sacred Hearts a place that is a destination for our summer
residents, guests and year-round residents. The more we are able to do “outreach” and the more we are able to
expand the Parish’s programs, the better we will thrive as a community.
Therefore, in collaboration with Fr. Mike, we are writing to ask you to consider two important requests:
First, take the time to formalize your own personal contribution plan for your annual giving to Sacred Hearts, for
both weekly and Holy Day collections. Think about how much you give to Sacred Hearts. Does it reflect the
importance of your faith and Sacred Hearts Parish in your life? Please take time this summer to reflect on your
giving and decide in advance how you might best support the Parish’s weekly and Holy Day collections.
Second, consider signing up for First Fruits, the Basilica’s new automated giving program. This will allow you
to plan your weekly and Holy Day giving in advance and help you to meaningfully give your support to the
Parish each week, year-round. In the coming weeks, you will be given the opportunity to register for the First
Fruits program. Our hope is that every year-round parishioner, summer resident, and summer visitor will learn
about the First Fruits program and determine how this can enable you to formalize and simplify your support of
Sacred Hearts on a consistent basis.
If each of us plans in advance and selects the First Fruits giving method, our ability to initiate and implement
new programs for the community, as well as our summer and year-round residents and friends, will be greatly
enhanced.
Thank you in advance for your consideration and for your continued generosity and support of the Basilica
Parish of the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary.

Summer Appeal—Thank you for your generosity!
Our summer appeal is an important source of support for our community, especially
through the long winter months. I am happy to report that as of July 26th, our
appeal has reached almost $40,000.00 This is one of the most generous summer
appeals ever. With may new events planned for Sacred Hearts I am so grateful for all
those who took part. It is not too late to make a summer appeal donation. Envelopes
are in the back of our church or donations can be sent to the rectory.
Summer Events
This fall our diocese, in conjunction with St. John’s University, will be
offering a series of meetings for East End parishes to help us plan for the
future. The information to be discussed includes changes in demographics,
economics, and patterns of church attendance, generosity, and activity. I
think this is an excellent opportunity. The sessions are offered through our
diocesan planning office and will be free to the parish and participants. For
us to take part we would need to have at least 8 people willing to
participate. Dates and times for the meetings are not set yet.
Altar Flowers

Catholic Ministries Appeal and Stewardship
Stewardship Happenings and Needs
One of the great ways that people support our parish is by donating skilled work. Just this past
week J Andreassi and Tony Tuscano arranged to reset and point the front steps of our
church. Many of you noticed that a couple of steps had become loose. Their team did the work.
Nick Feldmann of Eldor and Bob Sullivan of Sullivan Electric have done a super job of
installing new lighting, running cables, and fixing some electrical problems. Earlier this month Ed
Corrigan helped us with some landscaping needs around our rectory. Thanks to all! These are
just a few of the practical needs of our church provided by local families and businesses.
Here are some things we need now:
Concrete Work: There is a badly damaged apron in front of the
rectory garage (12” x 50”). It needs to be removed, regraded, and
new concrete poured. If you are able to help us with this project please
contact Fr. Mike at the rectory.
“Youth Ministry changed my life. I would not be the same person without Youth
Ministry; it molded me. I tell everyone the way to be the best you can be is to
give yourself fully to your Faith and soak up everything you can from your Parish Youth Ministry experience,” shared Joseph .
More than 6,000 young people participate in Youth Ministry Programs in our Diocese.
The Catholic Ministries Appeal is also important for so many other ministries and programs that
help our children grow in our faith, including religious education programs for more than 100,000 of
our young people in public schools as well as Campus and young adult ministry programs.
Your support helps to inspire our young people to live and love their faith.
Please know that I thank you most sincerely for your consideration of this special request to make a
gift to the 2015 Catholic Ministries Appeal. Please know that no gift is too small and every gift
makes a difference in the lives of our young people.

El Papa Francisco Habló en Ecuador - Me quiero
detener con José y María en Belén. Ellos tuvieron que
dejar su lugar, los suyos, sus amigos. Tuvieron que
dejar lo propio e ir a otra tierra. Una tierra en la que no
conocían a nadie, no tenían casa, no tenían familia.
