The Fruit of the Tree:
Sacraments and Service
On Good Friday, we gathered to remember the day that Christ was nailed to the
cross. Through Christ’s resurrection, the tree of death has truly become the tree
of life. During these 50 days of Easter, we now celebrate and receive the fruit of
the cross - the sacraments. At the Easter Vigil at St. Edward the Confessor and at
San Felipe de Jesus, forty men, women, and children received the gift of divine life
in Baptism, Eucharist and Confirmation. And the celebrations continue.
During the 50 days of Easter, 50 children will receive Baptism, Communion and
Confirmation at the 5:30pm Mass on April 25th , more than 200 children will receive their First Holy Communion, dozens of infants will be baptized, 165 teenagers will receive the Sacrament of Confirmation, and 15 couples will celebrate the
Sacrament of Matrimony. Indeed, the sacraments are the fruit of our risen Lord and his cross has become the
tree of life.
On Holy Thursday, we celebrated the institution of the Eucharist and, through the washing of feet, Jesus taught
us that the sacraments are lived out through prayer and service. In addition to our parish outreach ministries,
last week over thirty parishioners met at 4:30am and traveled to Tijuana to build a house for a family in need.
Before the final blessing last weekend, we were invited to share our time and money as we gather this Sunday
at 2 pm to pack 80,000 meals for the poor in Liberia. Last month, a student from our parish school, a representative from Catholic Charities, and Tim, a seminarian for our diocese, asked us to respond to the call of service by making our annual PSA contribution. Serving others is the fruit of the sacraments and a sign of our
Christian faith.
Please respond to the call to service by making your PSA contribution today and join us this Sunday at 2pm as
we provide food for the hungry, while having a lot of fun.
May Christ’s cross, the tree of life, bear much fruit through us.
Happy Easter!
-Fr. Brendan
Art Committee
As mentioned in an earlier bulletin, we will be acquiring a statue of the Holy Family which will be located in the niche between Mary’s Chapel and the “cry room”. I am also looking into the possibility
of commissioning an image of Mary and one of St. Joseph somewhere near the sanctuary. If you have
experience with art and are willing to be a member of an art committee,
please contact me @ [email protected].

Consider Becoming a Member of the Pastoral Council
Dear Fellow Parishioner,
The Pastoral Council of St. Edward the Confessor Church and San Felipe de Jesus Chapel is seeking four new
members.
The Parish Pastoral Council, which was formed in 2009 by Fr. Steve Sallot, is a consultative body consisting of
twelve members which strives to discern the movement of the Holy Spirit among God's people in the parish.
The Council develops and recommends parish pastoral plans and directions through a consensus process and
prayerful reflection.
Over the last two years, the Pastoral Council has advised me on such things as the Mass schedule change in
2014, the further integration of San Felipe Chapel and St. Edward the Confessor Church, the reorganization of
the parish preschool and elementary school, the renovation of the church, plant management considerations,
parish communication approaches, parish ministry planning, and a strategic outreach plan.
The council’s membership is reflective of the parish's rich diversity. The twelve current council members include men and women, young and old, new and long-term parishioners, married and single people, parish
school parents and Faith Formation parents, and those who primarily attend San Felipe and others who attend
St. Edward the Confessor Church. We are seeking to maintain a diversified council in our selection of new
members.
Criteria for memberships includes:



At least 18 years of age and a registered parishioner
Able to serve a three-year term beginning in July 2015
Able to meet on the first Tuesday of each month from 7-9pm
If you are interested in becoming a member of Pastoral Council, please complete and return your application
by April 30th, 2015. Applications are available at the parish office.
Applications will be reviewed during the first two weeks of May. The selection will be completed by the end of
May. Applicants are invited to attend the May 5th Pastoral Council. Selected candidates will be asked to attend
the July 7th meeting to be introduced to the council members.
We appreciate your willingness to consider this call to use your time and talent for our Parish. We invite and
encourage you to contact any current Pastoral Council member with questions you may have or if you would
like to know more about the Council and its service.

Prayer Breakfast
May 1st
7:30 –9:00 a.m.
When people think of the changes of Vatican II, they
usually think about the change from Mass in Latin to English. However, one of the watershed documents of the
Council was Nostra Aetate which addressed the Catholic
Church’s relationship to non-Christian religions. One of
the joys of my priesthood has been my relationship with
non-Catholic faith leaders.
As an expression of our desire for dialogue and friendship with those of other faiths, please considering attending the Interfaith Council of South Orange County
Annual Prayer Breakfast at Saddleback Memorial Medical
Center in Laguna Hills on
Friday May 1st from 7:30– 9 a.m.
The first eight people who register with me by
Thursday, April 16th are free. Register after April
16th is $20
