Jesus said to them again, “Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, so I send you.”
And when he had said this, he breathed on them and said to them, “Receive the Holy Spirit.
Whose sins you forgive are forgiven them, and whose sins you retain are retained.”

Domingo de Pentecostés
St. Mary Parish, Waltham
May 24, 2015
My brothers and Sisters in Christ,
The great solemnity of Pentecost has arrived. Fifty days
after Jesus rose from the dead and forty days after he
ascended to the heights of heaven, the Consoler, the
Paraclete, the Breath of Almighty God, the Power of the
Most High, the Spirit of burning, judgment, revelation,
holiness, truth, fear of the Lord, knowledge, understanding,
might, counsel, wisdom, adoption, prophecy, grace and life
came to the disciples in the upper room of Jerusalem. He
fulfilled the promise Jesus made to the disciples. We have
been living in the age of the Spirit ever since. The Holy
Spirit is the Lord the giver of the Life who proceeds from
the Father and the Son. With the Father and Son, He is
worshipped and glorified. Until Christ comes again, God
will continue to give us His very self through the Holy
Spirit, sanctifying and feeding us, changing bread and wine
into the Body and Blood of Christ. May the outpouring of
the Holy Spirit, first given to you at your baptism, fill you
with His grace so that, to paraphrase St. Paul, it is no longer
you who live, but Christ who lives in and through you.
Father Michael

ST. VINCENT de PAUL
Today as we celebrate Pentecost, the Holy Spirit wants to
make us advocates of God’s presence to bring new life to
others, especially those who do not know the love of God in
their lives.
When we give to the poor, God indeed pours his love, peace
and joy into our hearts, into our lives and into the hearts of
those who are poor. Please remember the poor as you leave
church today with your donation in the St. Vincent de Paul
Poor Boxes.
Seeking the grace of the Holy Spirit, we pray: Come, Holy
Spirit, That the winds of Pentecost may move us to deeds of
peace and justice. Come, Holy Spirit, That the fire of
Pentecost may breathe new hope into the hopeless, Come,
Holy Spirit. That we may listen in the silence of our heart to
people and events. Come, Holy Spirit. Amen.

CHILDREN’S GARDEN
You may have noticed the row of flowers on the side of the
ramp connecting the Church and the parking lot. This is a
part of the larger garden tended by the children in the After
School Program. The children are working together to care
for the large garden made up of vegetables, herbs and flowers. Many of the children also wanted to have a section of
the garden assigned just to them. So there are small sections
of flowers in the row along the ramp assigned to individual
children or pairs of them. During the week, they take care of
their section – weeding, tending, watering their flowers.
They are doing a great job. Some of them water their
friend’s garden if they are not at the program on a certain
day. They are learning a great deal of how life begins and
grows. They are learning to be responsible and to pay attention to God’s creation. Please take a look at the children’s
work when you have a chance.

God our Father, we thank you for
calling men and women to serve in
your Son’s Kingdom as priests, deacons and consecrated persons. Send
your Holy Spirit to help others to
respond generously and courageously to your call. May our community
of faith support vocations of sacrificial love in our youth and young
adults. Through our Lord Jesus
Christ, who lives and reigns with you
in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one
God, forever and ever. Amen.

SCRIPTURE OF THE WEEK
We encourage everyone to continue reading the Acts of the
Apostles this week …
ACTS OF THE APOSTLES – CHAPTER 21 PART 1
Arrival at Tyre. When we had taken leave of them we set
sail, made a straight run for Cos, and on the next day for
Rhodes, and from there to Patara. Finding a ship crossing to
Phoenicia, we went on board and put out to sea. We caught
sight of Cyprus but passed by it on our left and sailed on
toward Syria and put in at Tyre where the ship was to unload
cargo. There we sought out the disciples and stayed for a
week. They kept telling Paul through the Spirit not to
embark for Jerusalem. At the end of our stay we left and
resumed our journey. All of them, women and children
included, escorted us out of the city, and after kneeling on
the beach to pray, we bade farewell to one another. Then we
boarded the ship, and they returned home.

Q & A – LITURGY & SACRAMENTS
We continue with our “Question & Answer” series about
Liturgy and the Sacraments. The text is taken from the
Compendium of the Catechism of the Catholic Church.
What is the purpose of holy images?
The image of Christ is the liturgical icon par excellence.
Other images, representations of Our Lady and of the Saints,
signify Christ who is glorified in them. They proclaim the
same Gospel message that Sacred Scripture communicates
by the word and they help to awaken and nourish the faith of
believers.

Pentecost Sunday
