Christian men to walk with. Together
we can grow in our faith, grow closer
to God, and help each other live
Christ-centered lives. The group will
meet for breakfast on Wednesday
mornings, with the first meeting on
February 25th, during the first week
of Lent. If you are interested in participating, contact Ralph Benedetto at

Thank you for your generosity and
your Stewardship of Treasure. You
are living the Beatitudes when you
assist the Society with their work with
those in need.
Lent, the Church's annual prebaptismal retreat, prepares us to gather around the Easter font, renew our
baptismal vows, and receive new life
from the water as the elect are
plunged into Christ's death and resurrection. This core meaning is more or
less available, depending on whether
we journey with catechumens in the
parish and on the vigor of our liturgical celebration of the Triduum. Some
persist in seeing Lent as a lonely journey in the wilderness; yet this week
we enter the Lenten fast in solidarity
with one another. The smudged foreheads you will spy throughout Ash
Wednesday on buses, street corners,
and supermarket aisles remind you
that you are hardly alone in your desire to enact a spring cleaning regime
for your spiritual life.
Long ago, this kind of repentance was
available to Christians only once.
Ashes and sackcloth were not raiment
for a day, but permanent habits for
public sinners. Fasting became a way
of life, and if they sinned severely
again, there was no hope of restored
communion. Happily, this system did
not endure. It produced reluctant
Christians who even held back from
baptism, like St. Augustine did, out of
fear. Today we have recovered an
ancient tradition that conversion and
repentance are constant themes on
life's journey, and that Lent is an annual opportunity to revive our baptismal identity, both as individuals and
communities.

In preparation for the next Synod of
the Bishops, Pope Francis has requested that all Bishops make a broad consultation on matters of the Vocation

Abortion in America
"America you are beautiful and
blessed. The ultimate test of your
greatness is the way you treat every
human being, but especially the weakest and most defenseless. If you want
equal justice for all and true freedom
and lasting peace, then America, defend life". - Pope John Paul II
• America was founded upon the "selfevident truth" that all humans are endowed with the unalienable right to
LIFE. Yet a baby is aborted every 23
seconds in the U.S. Over 4,000 babies
are aborted every day. About 57 million babies have been aborted since
the decision of Roe v Wade in January 1973. Abortion is truly "America's
holocaust".
• As a result of Roe v Wade and sister
case, Doe v Bolton, America has
some of the most liberal laws on abortion in the world, effectively allowing
abortion on demand throughout the
whole nine months of pregnancy.
• The abortion rate in the U.S. is higher than Western Europe and Canada.
It is not as high as the rates in China,
Cuba and the former Soviet Union
countries which have reached epidemic levels.
• Teenagers constitute around 20% of
all abortions in the U.S. About 55% of
minors who have abortions do not tell
their parents.
• 17 states use public funds to pay for
abortions, so about 15% of all abortions in the U.S. are paid for with
public money. Our tax dollars fund
Planned Parenthood, the nation's largest abortion provider and promoter of
casual sex and abortion.
