This Sunday’s Reflection
- Father Stephen.
Our first reading from the book of Exodus opens with a
list of laws the people were called to obey. In today’s
Gospel a lawyer asks Jesus which commandment in the
law was the greatest. Jesus tells him and us that the
greatest and the first commandment is to love God. The
second commandment is to love your neighbour as
yourself. These two commandments are the foundation of
our faith. Jesus concludes that the whole law and the
prophets depend on these two commandments. If we
observe them, then even the gates of hell will not prevail
against us. If one looks at all of church history — not just
at the last sixteen or seventeen hundred years — the
reforming bishops of Vatican II didn’t create anything
new. They simply asked us to return to the teachings and
practices that the earliest followers of Jesus would have
been comfortable with. This gives me the opportunity to
share with you some of the basic teachings of our church
which you may not have heard for quite some time.
These teachings are as valid
today as they were when first
taught many centuries ago. Our
Church has five precepts which
we are all called to live. One:
You shall attend Mass on
Sundays and holy days of
obligation and remain free from
work or activity that could
impede the sanctification of
such days. Two: You shall
confess your sins at least once
a year. Three: You shall receive
the sacrament of the Eucharist
at least during the Easter
season. Four: You shall observe the days of fasting and
abstinence established by the Church. And five: You shall
help to provide for the needs of the Church. Our Church
also calls us to works of mercy. The works of mercy are
charitable actions by which we come to the aid of our
neighbour in his spiritual and bodily necessities. We all
know that sin exists, that it is the failure to love. Some sin
is less offensive which we call venial sin. Some sin is
grave which we call mortal sin because it breaks our
relationship with God and each other. The Church
identifies seven capital sins also referred to at times as
the seven deadly sins. They are: pride, covetousness,
lust, anger, gluttony, envy and sloth. When all is said in
done we must consider the four last things: death,
judgement, hell and heaven. We pray in our Apostles
Creed that Jesus, “is seated at the right hand of God the
Father almighty; from there he will come to judge the
living and the dead”. From that judgment it will be
determined where we will spend eternity, heaven or hell.
That Judgment will be based on how well we, “loved the
Lord our God with all our heart, with all our soul, and with
all our mind,” and how well, “we loved our neighbour as
our self.”

Nuestra primera lectura, tomada del libro del Éxodo se abre
con una lista de las leyes que llamaron al puebo a obedecer.
En el evangelio de hoy un abogado le pregunta a Jesús cuál
mandamiento de la ley era el mas grande. Jesús le respondió
a él y nos dice a nosotros que el mayor y el primer
mandamiento es amar a Dios. El segundo mandamiento es
amar a tu prójimo como a ti mismo. Estos dos mandamientos
son la base de nuestra fe. Jesús concluye que toda la ley y
los profetas se fundan en estos dos mandamientos. Si
cumplimos estos, entonces incluso las puertas del infierno no
triunfaran contra nosotros. Si uno mira toda la historia de la
iglesia, en los últimos 1600 o 1700 años atrás, la reforma de
los obispos del Concilio Vaticano Segundo no crearon nada
nuevo. Ellos simplemente nos pidieron que volvieramos a las
enseñanzas y a las prácticas con las que los primeros
seguidores de Jesús habian cumplido. Esto me da la
oportunidad de compartir con ustedes, algunas de las
enseñanzas básicas de nuestra iglesia, que posiblemente
ustedes no han oído hablar desde hace bastante tiempo.
Estas enseñanzas son tan válidas hoy como lo fueron
cuando se enseñaron por primera
vez hace muchos siglos. Nuestra
Iglesia tiene cinco preceptos que
todos estamos llamados a vivir. Uno:
Asistir y oir la Misa entera los
domingos y demas fiestas de
precepto, y descansar de aquellas
ocupaciones o trabajos que puedan
impedir esa santificación de estos
días. Dos: Confesar los pecados al
menos una vez al año. Tres: Recibir
el sacramento de la Eucaristía al
menos
por
Pascua.
Cuatro:
Abstenerse de comer carne y ayunar
en los días establecidos por la
iglesia. Y cinco: Ayudar a la iglesia
en sus necesidades. Nuestra Iglesia
también nos llama a las obras de
misericordia. Las obras de misericordia
son acciones
caritativas, mediante las cuales socorremos a nuestro
prójimo en sus necesidades corporales y espirituales. Hay
siete obras de misericordia corporales: Dar de comer al
hambriento. Dar de beber al sediento. Dar techo a quien no
lo tiene. Vestir al desnudo. Visitar a los enfermos y a los
presos. Enterrar a los muertos. Todos sabemos que existe el
pecado, que es la falta de amor. Algunos pecados son
menos ofensivos a los que llamamos pecado venial. Algunos
pecados son graves a los que llamamos pecado mortal,
porque rompen nuestra relación con Dios y con los demás.
La Iglesia identifica siete pecados capitales que también se
refieren algunas veces a los siete pecados mortales. Ellos
son: La soberbia, la avaricia, la envidia, la ira, la lujuria, la
gula, la pereza. Cuando todo está dicho, nosotros debemos
considerar las cuatro últimas cosas: muerte, juicio, infierno y
el cielo. Nosotros rezamos en nuestro Credo de los
Apóstoles que Jesús, "está sentado a la diestra de Dios
Padre todopoderoso; desde allí ha de venir a juzgar a los
vivos y a los muertos ". En dicho juicio se determinará donde
pasaremos la eternidad, en el cielo o en el infierno. Esa juicio
se basará en la forma de como nosotros "amamos al Señor
nuestro Dios con todo nuestro corazón, con toda nuestra
alma y con toda nuestra mente," y tambien si, "nosotros
amamos a nuestro prójimo como a nosotros mismos."

First Communion and Confirmation:
Students attending our parish school of St. John’s are
prepared for First Communion in grade two and for
Confirmation in grade seven. Parents of students
attending public schools are asked to contact Father
Stephen in September of the school year in which your
child is to make their First Communion or be confirmed.

Father Stephen please notify the office.

It is very desirable that a Funeral Mass for those who
have died be held in the church, with their body present.

Catholic Women's League Quilt Raffle Tickets: CWL Councillors, please collect and return your tickets (sold or unsold) by November
7th. If you wish you may put the ticket stubs and money in the collection and put CWL and your name on the envelope.
On Saturday November 1st is the day of prayer for 40 days
for Life assigned to the parish of St. John's and Our Lady of
Guadalupe. You can register your name on the schedule
that fits more easily, from 6:00 am to 9:00 pm and can find
the sheets on the tables at the entrance of the church.

Bazaar & Schnitzel Dinner: Friday, November 14th in the Parish Hall, from 2:00 to 8:00 pm. The
Schnitzel Dinner will be served from 4:30 to 7:00 pm. Cost of $14 per person. We are still looking for
volunteers to help with our event. We also need donations of new items for the Toonie Table, and
nearly new items for the Nearly New Store (ie. Puzzles, books, costume jewelry, glassware, small
appliances, toys, small household goods). (Please no clothing or shoes). For the Country Store and
the Bake Table, we need knitting, crochet, sewing, crafts, and all kinds of baked goods. Items may
be dropped off at the parish hall on Tuesday, November 11th and Thursday, November 13th after 7:00
pm. On Friday, November 14th, the ladies will be in the Parish Hall all day. This would be a good
time to drop off desserts for the Dessert Table, and pies for the Dinner. For further information call

Campaign: Under the slogan "Sow Much Love",
the goal of the campaign is to educate Canadians
about the role of family farmers as stewards of
the world's seeds, and to call on Canadians to
take action to support the rights of farmers in the
face of the growing threat of corporate control of
seeds. By supporting small family farmers in their
struggle to maintain the world’s seed biodiversity,
we will ensure that they can continue to feed their
families, and play a major role in fighting global
hunger. Take action, and sign the petition when it becomes
available.
Book of Life: November is the month when we pray for our dead,
we encourage you to write the names of family members who
have died in "The Book of Life," which will be in the sanctuary
during the month November to pray for the repose of these souls.
