Thirty-third Sunday in Ordinary Time
Sursum Corda + Lift Up Your Hearts
On November 16, 1989 ( 25 years ago this weekend – today) six Jesuit priests, their housekeeper and her daughter
were brutally killed at the University of Central America (UCA) in El Salvador. During the country’s civil war, 19801992, the Salvadoran army used a strategy called “depriving the fish of water”. Entire villages were destroyed and
people fled either across the border to Honduras or into the capital of San Salvador where Catholic Churches granted
asylum. In 1986 the people decided to return home doing so at great personal risk. The Jesuits addressed the needs of
both the returning refugees and internally displaced persons.
Why were the Jesuits of UCA targeted?
Father Ignacio Martin-Baro published findings showing the effects of poverty and war on the mental health of the
nation. Father Segundo Montes revealed by way of his writings how many people had been displaced within El
Salvador. The president of UCA, Father Ignacio Ellacuría, sought some dialogue between the government and the rebel
coalition. He wanted both sides to sit down at the table and talk about the issues that surrounded the violence. The
housekeeper and her daughter were murdered because the general who ordered the massacre said, “I want no witnesses”.
The former Superior General of the Jesuits, Father Pedro Arrupe, stated: “ Our main educational objective must be to
form women and men for others…men and women completely convinced that a love of God which does not come from
justice for others is a farce”. When we talk about Catholic Education isn’t that the ultimate goal – to form people for
others.
On December 2, 1980 Dorothy Kazel, Maura Clarke, Ita Ford and Jean Donovan were savagely murdered by the
Salvadoran military for their work and dedication to the poor. Their lives were dedicated to supporting and encouraging
children and families who were victims of violence. Dorothy Kazel was an Ursuline Sister from Cleveland. Jean
Donovan, also from Cleveland, was a lay missioner. Ita Ford and Maura Clark, both New Yorkers, joined the Maryknoll
Sisters. Their lives are a living testimony of the direction that Pope Francis wants the Church to take. The blood of the
martyrs is the seed of the Church, yesterday, today and tomorrow. Preaching the Good News to the poor is our call both
here at home and abroad.
And what about Dorothy Stang, a Sister of the Notre Dame! She was killed in 2005 in Brazil because she stood with
the farmers against the loggers. A poor, frightened farmer witnessed her death. Her assailants asked for her weapons.
The only weapon she said she had was the Bible which she produced and began to read from the Beatitudes. She was
shot at point blank range.
Archbishop Oscar Romero was shot on March 24, 1980 as he elevated the chalice during the celebration of Mass.
Romero’s pastoral transformation opened his eyes to the plight of the least of the brothers and sisters among us. As he
continued to challenge the regime, he knew he was in their crosshairs. Romero once said; “As a Christian I do not
believe in death without resurrection. If they kill me, I shall rise in the Salvadoran people.” That is exactly what
happened!
I don’t know why, but it seems that at each year at this time I am reminded of the modern martyrs who reawaken with
me a sense of mission and renewed purpose in my priesthood. This time of year leading up to Christmas is filled with
the remembrances of martyrs – in the early Church and in the Church of every age – even present day. A martyr is a
witness. My prayer is to be a faithful and faith-filled witness to the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Won’t you join with me in
this important work! May we join hands together in the solidarity of our Baptismal Grace and our common vocation.
Pax et Bonum + Peace and all that is Good.

Sewers Needed
During the administration of the Sacrament of

the priest says “you have been clothed in Christ.” This
garment is very simple and usually looks like a small
stole about 24 inches long and 3 inches wide.
We would like to establish a small ministry of sewers
who would see that we always have sufficient Baptismal
Robes for the newly baptized.
Material will be provided as well as a pattern. If you
are interested in helping, please call Msgr. Deliman at the
rectory. This is something that you can do at home and
just drop off your good work at the rectory.
Formation of a Men’s Prayer Group
Coming in 2015
We would like to form a prayer group for men. Men
of any age 18 and up are invited. I guarantee no hugging,
hand holding or the like. Just a 45 minute quiet time to
either break open the Bible, talk about men’s issues, or
what may be troubling you about the Church. It can take
any shape you want, meet at your discretion, frequency
determined by participants. Why not give it some
thought. If you’re interested in helping me get it started,
please call me at the rectory.
