battle: Alzheimer’s

This year our dad was di­
agnosed with advanced Al­
zheimer’s.
“Alzheimer’s disease is a
form of dementia (or loss of
brain function) that affects
memory and thinking, as well as
behavior. Alzheimer’s tends to
worsen over time,” the resource
“Understanding Alzheimer’s: A
Guide for Caregivers” explains.
“There are two types of Al­
zheimer’s: early onset (where
symptoms appear before age 60)
and late onset (where symptoms
occur after age 60). Early onset
is less common than late onset.
While older people are more
likely to develop the disease,
it’s not a natural part of aging, ac­
cording to the National Institutes
of Health (NIH). The causes of
Alzheimer’s remain unclear, but
researchers believe that genetic
and environmental factors may
play a role,” the guide also said.
Our father, who most readers
know as “Tino” struggled with the
news and diagnosis. The family
sought out other medical opin­
ions in hopes that maybe doctors
were wrong. That was not to be
the case. Every doctor we saw
confirmed the diagnosis.
We met as a family to discuss
how best to help him, our mother,
and the family business. Our
father did not want his condition
to be made public (at the time)
because he was concerned about
how people in the community
would respond, and he did not
want anyone to feel pity for him
or to think any less of him.
He decided to take it day by
day and let time and his condi­
tion determine when the news
should be made public.
“I was watching the Spurs
win their championship when
I received a call from my mom
and there was urgency and
trembling in her voice,” said
David Duran, one of Tino’s
sons. “It was obvious she was
crying. I knew tears were run­
ning down her cheeks and she
was trying hard to hold onto her
emotions.”

Children’s hospital brings
happiness as healing

It might be a little early, but for
Rosa Torres, it was nice to cele­
brate Halloween at the Children’s
Hospital of San Antonio with her
18-year-old son Roberto Diaz.
Rosa and Roberto have been in
the hospital since Aug. 25, when
Roberto was diagnosed with an
extremely rare cancer. Roberto’s
chances to live were low, and
Rosa sacrificed everything to
ensure she would be by his side.
“I have other other kids at
home, and it’s hard,” Rosa said.
“I leave only in the mornings to
take them to school, and then
come back. I go to pick them up,
get them something to eat, and
then come back.”

respiratorias reinan durante esta
época del año.
La gripe, influenza, neumonía,
bronquitis y ahora el reciente
brote del enterovirus D68 amena­
zan la salud de niños en todo el
país.
Según los Centros de Control
y Prevención de Enfermedades
(CDC), en los últimos dos meses
780 personas en los Estados Uni­
dos, la mayoría niños, han presen­
tado una enfermedad respiratoria
causada por este enterovirus.
Hasta la fecha, Texas ha confir­
mado 14 casos, uno de ellos en el

de niños con infecciones respira­
torias agudas.
El aparato tiene como nombre
Oxigenación Extracorpóreo de

me dijo que
era un gusto

pero hasta ahí. Estiré mi mano
y ella no estiró la suya. Luego
vino su explicación: Acababa
de llegar de África y aprendió a
saludar sin darse la mano. Eso
salva vidas, me dijo.
La doctora, amablemente,
se me acercó y juntó su codo
derecho con el mío. Después,
lo empujó suavemente, como
en un juego. “Así se saludan en
Nigeria”, me dijo. Y luego me
enseñó otro saludo. Cerró su
mano derecha en un puño y me
pidió que hiciera lo mismo. Acto
seguido, acercó su puño al mío,
pero sin tocarlo. Es el saludo
“Bluetooth”, me dijo, refirién­
dose a la tecnología que permite
conectar aparatos electrónicos
sin un cable.
Marty es una doctora como
de película. Nació en Cuba, es
especialista en enfermedades in­
fecciosas, da clases en la Univer­
sidad Internacional de la Florida
en Miami, y la Organización
Mundial de la Salud la manda
a los lugares más peligrosos del
planeta para tratar de controlar
epidemias. Fue así que pasó 31
días en Nigeria.
¿Cómo se inició la epidemia
de ébola?, le pregunte. “Nadie
sabe por qué o cómo llegó el
ébola a esa parte de África”,
me explicó. Luego especuló
sobre una teoría, imposible de
comprobar, de murciélagos
contaminados con ébola. Los
nigerianos comen murciélagos,
y posiblemente se comieron uno
que no estaba bien cocido. Eso
realmente no lo sabemos. Lo que
sí sabemos es que miles de afri­
canos en Sierra Leona, Liberia y
Guinea están infectados, muchos
han muerto y que el resto del
mundo está aterrado de que le
pase lo mismo.
En Nigeria, la doctora Marty
estuvo encargada de establecer
un sistema en aeropuertos y
fronteras para impedir que al­
guien contaminado con el virus
del ébola entrara o saliera del
país. Y lo lograron. “En Nigeria
lo logramos extinguir”, me dijo
con una enorme sonrisa.
Los problemas comenzaron
a su regreso a Estados Unidos.
Viajó de Lagos, Nigeria, a
Fráncfort, Alemania, y nadie
la revisó al aterrizar. Hizo una
conexión y voló de Fráncfort a
Miami. Y ahí tampoco nadie la
revisó. Ni siquiera le hicieron
una pregunta.
“A mí no me revisaron”, me
dijo entre molesta y sorpren­
dida. “Nadie. Yo puse – en la
tarjeta de llegada– que estuve
en Nigeria y a nadie le importó.
Salí como si nada. Eso me preo­
cupó.”
Eso explica perfectamente
cómo se dio el primer caso de
ébola en Estados Unidos. El li­
beriano Thomas Duncan llegó a
Dallas, contaminado por el virus,
y nadie lo detuvo, lo examinó o
le hizo alguna pregunta. Nadie.
Entró como quien llega a su casa,
y poco después se murió.
Estados Unidos reaccionó tar­
de y mal, pero reaccionó. Aquí
no quieren prohibir los vuelos
que vienen de las naciones con
más infectados. Solo tomarán la
temperatura a pasajeros. Pero al
menos hay plena conciencia del
peligro del ébola y el presidente
Barack Obama lo ha catalogado
como una prioridad de seguridad
nacional. No es el caso en Lati­
noamérica.
En América Latina “no están
preparados” para enfrentar casos
de ébola, me dijo la doctora. “La
preparación es cosa de muchos
niveles. Nivel número uno es
darse cuenta que una persona
tiene ébola. Número dos, hay
que tener los remedios para
curar a la persona, proteger a
los médicos y enfermeras que
tratan a esas personas, y preparar
el cuarto que vas a utilizar”. Y
luego vino un juicio estremece­
dor: “Las últimas veces que yo
he estado en América Latina no
he visto que estén preparados”.
En otras palabras, tuvimos
suerte. Si Duncan hubiera ate­
rrizado en México, en Cen­
troamérica o en el Caribe en
lugar de Dallas, podríamos estar
frente a una epidemia letal de
enormes proporciones. Pero el
riesgo sigue presente.
La doctora Marty aprendió a
no confiar en la suerte. “Antes
de entrar a mi casa llevé toda mi
ropa a la lavandería y la lavé con
cloro”, me contó. Todos los días
se toma la temperatura al menos
dos veces –la fiebre es la primera
señal de posible contagio por un
virus– y evita saludar a la gente
de mano. “Eso reduce todo tipo
de enfermedades infecciosas”.
Su objetivo es poner de moda
el saludarse con los codos. De
eso nadie se ha muerto.

is one issue being decided right
now in federal court that will
decide whether all who want to
vote are able to do so—voter ID.
Texas passed one of the most
stringent photo voter ID laws in
the country and it was rightly
challenged by the Department
of Justice in federal court.
I agree with Corpus Christi’s
District Judge Nelva Gonzalez
Ramos, who recently held that
this law acts like an illegal “poll
tax.” She forbid it from being
enforced. Unfortunately, the
appellate court then blocked her
decision from being enforced,
so the unconstitutional voter
ID law will stay in effect for

Nov. 4 election. This is a greatly
disappointing result. Democ­
racy thrives when all citizens
can voice their concerns. We
should be making voting easier,
not harder.
The present debate over Voter
ID in Texas illustrates the differ­
ence between words and deeds.
To guarantee everyone equal
protection of the law and the
right to vote, the Constitution
was amended after the Civil
War, yet these noble sentiments
remained mere words on a piece
of paper for almost a century.
It took brave men and women,
such as César Chávez, Dr. Mar­
tin Luther King, Jr., and Dolores
Huerta to transform words into
deeds. This heroic struggle gave
birth to such laws as the Voting
Rights Act. I am a sponsor of
legislation to correct the Su­
preme Court’s undermining of
the Voting Rights Act.
Texas has already been found
guilty of intentional discrimina­
tion with too many of our offi­
cials seeking to suppress voting,
rather than expanding access
to the polls. We must remain
vigilant to ensure that the rights
bravely secured, should not be
whittled away.
I will continue to fight for
reform. Civic action is the
catalyst for change. Recently,
I have sought to increase the
minimum wage, fund unemploy­
ment benefits, and encourage job
growth. Unfortunately, many
in Congress have ignored these
vital issues, preferring instead
to grant more tax cuts to mul­
tinational corporations, while
cutting funds to help children
and advance education.

the best way to avoid the Voter
ID hassle is to vote by mail. If
you have voted by mail dur­
ing this year already, you will
automatically receive an ap­
plication to request a ballot for
the November election. If you
have not voted this year, you can
secure an application by calling
(210) 335-0362 or at bexar.org/
elections website.
Be sure to turn in your ballot
request before Oct. 24, and mail
in your ballot as soon as you get
it, as your marked ballot must
be received by 7 p.m. on Elec­
tion Day.

San Antonio is Ebola
free, but we’re prepared
to deal with it
It’s not a pandemic, so we may
rule out epidemic. Yet for whatever
reason it seems Ebola has created a
new disease, Panic Fever.
There hasn’t been this much
misinformation on a matter since
the tragedy of the shootings at
Sandy Hook Elementary or Boston
Marathon bombing.
It appears that local leaders be­
lieve in the adage of “strength in
numbers.” Earlier this week they
held a news briefing to get the word
out that residents are safe and need
not fear Ebola.
There were more local officials
on stage at the City’s Office of
Emergency Management to ease
concerns about Ebola in San Anto­
nio than there were in Dallas when
the Ebola diagnosis on Thomas
Eric Duncan was announced.
It needs to be said, the Ebola sit­
uation in this country is important.
Yet it’s not at the crisis level many
believe. Three people in a country
of approximately 312 million have
contracted Ebola. Let me state that
again, three people in a country of
approximately 312 million have
contracted Ebola. This is like a
drop of water in the ocean.
Nonetheless, a Regional Ebola
Preparedness conference was held
by at the City’s Office of Emer­
gency Management. Each said the
same thing in a different way to
assure everyone we are safe.
Gov. Rick Perry’s Texas Task
Force on Infectious Disease Pre­
paredness and Response is calling
for travel bans from Ebola outbreak
countries.
Among the initial recommenda­
tions being made by the task force
to enhance our state’s prepared­
ness and response to infectious
disease are:
• Establishment of two Ebola
Treatment Centers in Texas
• Establishment of specialized
patient transport teams
• Expanded training of infectious
disease protocols for health care
workers
• More testing labs for infectious
disease
• Increased authority for DSHS
chief to issue Enforceable Control
Orders.
The facts bear out one truth. As
mentioned before only three indi­
viduals have contracted the Ebola
virus. Thomas Eric Duncan was
the first; followed by Dallas nurses
Nina Pham and Amber Vinson,
respectively. Other than Ebola,
the only common denominator is
Texas Health Presbyterian Hos­
pital in Dallas. Of the three, only
Duncan has died.
Pham is presently being treated
in Bethesda, Maryland at the Na­
tional Institute of Health facility.
Her condition has changed from
good to fair.
Vinson is at Emory University
Hospital. At last word treatment
continues.
Both nurses charged that proto­
col was not followed at Presbyte­
rian Hospital. Here in San Antonio,
Dr. Bryon Alsip, of University
Hospital System, said protocol is
followed there. A medical team has
been setup at University Hospital
to treat any patient suspected of an
infectious disease. Thereby, allow­
ing everyday medical staffers to
deal with hospital patients.
The symptoms of Ebola are easy
to recognize:
• Fever (greater than 101.5°F)
• Severe headache
• Muscle pain
• Weakness
• Diarrhea
• Vomiting
• Abdominal (stomach) pain
• Unexplained hemorrhage
(bleeding or bruising)
The incubation periods are from
two to 21 days after Ebola expo­
sure. The average however is eight
to 10 days.
Ebola, which is a hemorrhage
fever, the Centers for Disease
Control and Prevention explain the
transmission of Ebola.
When an infection does occur,
the virus can be spread in several
ways to others. Ebola is spread
through direct contact (through
broken skin or mucous membranes
in, for example, the eyes, nose, or
mouth) with
• Blood or body fluids (includ­
ing but not limited to urine, saliva,
sweat, feces, vomit, breast milk,
and semen) of a person who is sick
with Ebola.
• Objects (like needles and
syringes) that have been contami­
nated with the virus.
• Infected animals
• Ebola is not spread through
the air or by water, or in general,
by food.
• However, in Africa, Ebola may
be spread as a result of handling
bushmeat (wild animals hunted
for food) and contact with infected
bats.
• There is no evidence that mos­
quitos or other insects can transmit
Ebola virus. Only mammals (for
example, humans, bats, monkeys,
and apes) have shown the ability to
become infected with and spread
Ebola virus.
As an aside, Enterovirus D68
is more of a problem, but no one
is talking about it. To date there
have been 780 confirmed cases,
a majority of whom are children.
Six deaths have been recorded, all
children.
In Texas, 14 such cases and been
reported. One is in Bexar County.
All are well.
In San Antonio, there are no
reported cases of Ebola.

as things progress,” Amelia “Mil­
lie” Duran said of her husband of
60 years.
“I listened to my mother as she
described what she was experi­
encing and how painful it was
for her to see my dad hurting and
feeling the hopelessness that is
typical of what this disease brings
with it,” David recalled. “I heard
her heart breaking with every
word as she tried to explain how
the disease is daily taking its toll
on him.”
For many of you who have ex­
perienced the same thing in your
own families in the past or cur­
rently, you certainly understand
the pain.
It’s heartbreaking to watch any­
one go through this. Our father,
who was always in command of
things, confident and strong, now
finds himself struggling with daily
challenges that most of us take for
granted. Anyone who is going
through this knows that the life
of a caregiver is just as difficult
and uncomfortable for someone of
age. Our mom gets overwhelmed
by it all, and we know it will only
get more challenging as time
goes on.
We recently asked our father
some questions about his condi­
tion and the following is what he
had to say:

TD: My family and the scholar­

yes, helping young people go to
school means that much to him.)
Q: What do you want people to
know about Alzheimer’s?
He laughed and replied …
TD: It’s very scary!
Q: Do you have any fear going
through this?
TD: Yes, I fear what I am put­
ting your mom through and the
impact it has on her. I love her
too much to hurt her, and I don’t
want her to suffer because of me.
She does not deserve this. I also
fear losing her while I am going
though this. I need her, she is ev­
erything to me, I would not want
to live a minute longer without
her, that would be my biggest fear.
I pray at night for God to please
take me first and let her live a full
life. I’m not afraid of dying; I’m
more worried about being alive,
and even though I am alive, I am
no longer living life.
Q: What encouragement can
you give others going through the
same thing?
TD: Pray, pray, pray! Ac­
knowledge Christ as savior and
leave the rest to Him!
Q: How has your faith helped
you?

TD: When I remember it,
it makes me feel like I can do
anything. If this is the road God
has for me then I will go. But,
I ask God to please never leave
me alone.
Q: What has been the most dif­
ficult for you?
TD: Facing all the different
constraints I now have. I can’t
drive and do other things I love
to do. There are so many things
that have restraints now.
Q: What hope do you have for
La Prensa and the family run­
ning it?
TD: That the community would
continue to support La Prensa as
they have all these years and to
see it grow and prosper and be a

Tino Duran grew up on the
West side of San Antonio, lost his
father when he was 4, was raised
by his mother until she later mar­
ried. He grew up poor with very
little; living day-to-day to get by.
Our grandmother loved him
very much and desperately want­
ed her son to have a better life
and did everything she could to
help him. He believed in himself
and pushed hard in challenging
circumstances.
He graduated from Lanier High
school in 1954 at the top of his
class, served as Student Council
President and Drill Team Com­
mander. He went on to St. Mary’s
University where he received his
BS and Master’s degree in Politi­
cal Science.
Over his career he has held
numerous positions in local and
national administrations, includ­
ing holding the position of Presi­
dent of the National Association
of Hispanic Publications for five
years.
Together, Tino and Millie re­
vived La Prensa in 1989 and it has
become their legacy. Prior to this
they owned a Spanish newspaper
in Ft. Worth called El Informador
Hispano.

S.A. Rotary creates 21st century change

Rotary Clubs are often seen as
out-of-date organizations repre­
sented by out-of-touch individu­
als. Until the late 1980s, Rotary
was literally a “boy’s club,” ban­
ning women from membership.
When Jacqueline Parsons,
Ph.D., LPC, joined the Stone Oak
Rotary Club in 2002, she expected
opposition from its members, but
instead, she found a surprisingly
modern community organization.
“I have three research agen­
das: LGBT, motherhood, and
relational neuroscience. Honestly,
when I first approached the ro­
tary, I thought they’d run away
screaming, but they completely
embraced it. I am so proud to be
a part of the rotary and this move­
ment,” Parsons said.
Today, Rotary International is
active on six continents, and rep­
resented by a growing number of
women and minorities who help
address the issues facing local and
global communities.
Ten of those women, including
Parsons, shared their passion for
positive change during the “Rota­
ry Women In Action” event, held
last week at the White House.
“It was an honor, and I’m very
proud of what we’ve done at
#5840. The entire experience was
memorable, and it was wonder­
ful to be a part of the group that
was being recognized,” Parsons
added.
Janet Livingston, the Rotary
International District Governor
for #5840, nominated Parsons as
an outstanding female leader for
her work with the Rotary Club.
Hundreds of women were nation­
ally nominated for their work, but
Parsons was the only individual to
represent Texas.
“There was history all over the
walls, it was unbelievable. I was
so proud that they recognized
these women of action in D.C.,
and it was significantly unique
that San Antonio had this recogni­
tion,” Livingston said.
The “Women In Action” pre­
sentation was held in the Eisen­
hower Room, and concluded with
a special tour of the East Wing of
the White House.
Parsons, an adjunct professor in
the College of Education and Hu­
man Development Department of
Counseling at UTSA, has always
fought to improve the educational
standards and opportunities in
her community. Her FLAG (Fit­
ness, Literacy, Attendance, and
Grades) program provides incen­
tives for kids to attend school, and
recognizes the positive work they
do each year.
In the last year, FLAG helped
raise Walzem Elementary’s
achievement from an “F” to a
“D” in achievement, and noted the
fourth highest attendance rate in
the NEISD area. Parsons is confi­
dent that the school’s learning and
attendance levels will continue to
improve in 2015.
Although the Obama Adminis­
tration has made women’s rights
a priority, Parsons believes that
San Antonio should be a part of
that initiative.

8 City Councilman Ron Niren­
berg presented Parsons with a
special citation for her services to
Rotary International on Wednes­
day, where Parsons encouraged
the mayor to create a coalition
dedicated to women’s research
and progress.
“Being a female, wanting to
support other females, I think it’s
time to start working on this. We

With the community donating
to the Salvation Army, children
that would have otherwise not
have been given a Christmas
present are now looking at a
better ending to their year.
Many families are now able to
register for the Angel Tree Pro­
gram so they may put presents
under their Christmas tree to fill
their children with joy.
Betsy, a mother of four chil­
dren, received help from the
Salvation Army’s Angel Tree
Program this week.
“It helps me when Christmas
time comes around being as (sic)
I can’t purchase as much as I
would like to for my children,”
Betsy said. After she lost her
job, Betsy was desperate for
help.
Betsy’s children Lisha (1),
Jasmine (5), Floyd (7) and
Selemar (10) were not going to
receive presents this Christmas.
She needed to do something.
“I was very frustrated,” Betsy
explained.
After losing hope in her chil­
dren’s Christmas, Betsy re­
ceived information about the
Angel Tree Program and im­
mediately went to the Salvation
Army and registered.
“This makes my children
overjoyed that they will have
gifts under the tree,” Betsy said.
This is her first year partici­
pating, and she’s very thankful
that it is possible.

Project QUEST receives $6M grant

Expect to see a lot more ad­
ditions to San Antonio’s work­
force in the near future.
The US Department of La­
bor (DOL) has endowed Proj­
ect QUEST with a $6 million
grant that will focus on training
people for well-paying infor­
mation technology jobs, which
are sorely lacking in the Alamo
City.
The grant will train 500 peo­
ple, and add four more years of
existence to Project QUEST in
a project is called the “Home­
grown IT” project.
“The workforce has adjusted
over time. Businesses have
changed what they need,” Con­
gressman Joaquin Castro said.
“We have moved further into the
digital age so this grant will be
instrumental in making sure we
can prepare more San Antonians
to enter the information technol­
ogy field.”
It’s part of the Labor Depart­
ments “Ready to Work Partner­
ship,” a larger $150 million
grant that is disbursed to various
businesses, colleges, and work­
force programs across the nation
to help those facing unemploy­
ment, or those that haven’t had
a job for the past six months.

Project QUEST already is,”
Congressman Lloyd Doggett
said. “If we have the qualified
workforce in all levels and
skills, we will continue the
economic expansion that is cur­
rently underway.”

Food bank begins Food4SA Million Pound Challenge campaign
Just a Thought:
Central Catholic grads

In 1960 when
I graduated from
St. Gregory the
Great Catholic
School in Bal­
cones Heights,
I was thrilled
Steve Walker to have learned
I had been ac­
cepted to attend Central Catholic
High School downtown San Anto­
nio. That was the good news, or so
I thought.
Unfortunately, I received the bad
news that rocked my world just two
weeks before school. I was devas­
tated to learn that my family would
be moving to some foreign country
called Massachusetts. Springfield,
Massachusetts to be exact.
Needless to say I had never heard
of Springfield, Massachusetts much
less wanted to move there and dis­
rupt my teen years and totally ruin
my life since all my male classmates
for four years from St. Gregory’s,
were accepted.
Of course, my female classmates
would assuredly attend Providence
High School as well. Just one big
happy family. Granted, I may have
sounded a bit over dramatic at the
time, but the pain and anguish has
never left me.
Needless to say I was not a happy
teenager. My world, as I saw it, was
ruined and in disarray. For my 14
year old self, it was Armageddon and
the Apocalypse combined.
Ironically, I did not return to San
Antonio until 1972 after a tour of
sunny Viet Nam and Germany. On
arrival I was hired as an English
teacher at Krueger Middle School
in the North East ISD. With 26 years
of teaching under my belt over the
years, I honed my skills from North
East, Edgewood, SAISD and Har­
landale that held me in good stead.
Along the journey I met numerous
Central Catholic graduates who I
should have known back in the 60s.
Since I have been back, I have
re-united with some of those gradu­
ates. The first one who comes to
mind is former San Antonio Mayor
and former HUD Secretary, Henry
Cisneros. I have written about him
for La Prensa as a local icon. In 1980
when he ran as the first Hispanic
Mayor of San Antonio, my govern­
ment class at La Memorial and I
stuffed envelopes and blocked for
him in his bid for mayor.
Another well-known Central
Catholic alumni is former Congress­
man Charlie Gonzalez who was
pulled out his senior year by his
father the late Congressman Henry
B. Gonzalez to attend another high
school. I have written about him
as well. In fact, we both ran for his
father’s seat when he retired. We
know how that turned out although
he supported me in my successful
bid for Pct.2 JP.
Then there is the nationally fa­
mous Sonny Melendrez who is
now a motivational speaker and also
frequent stand-up comedian. I have
been told by many from Central
Catholic he was a funny guy even
as a high school student. I have
covered numerous events where he
served as the master of ceremonies
and motivational guest speaker with
a little comedy mixed in. Over the
years Sonny has made us laugh and
also bring us to tears in a good way.
Then there is Oscar Zaldivar, my
long-time buddy who became the
first Hispanic President of the San
Antonio Junior Chamber of Com­
merce in 1980-81 at the same time
Henry Cisneros became the first
Hispanic Mayor of San Antonio. I
was privileged to follow Oscar as
president. For a year Oscar was also
my roommate.
With this year being Central
Catholic High School’s 50th class
reunion, the students who should
have been my classmates raised over
$25, 000 for the school which was
matched by one member of the class.
Had my father not uprooted us
and unceremoniously whisked us
away to that foreign land of Mas­
sachusetts, I would have been a part
of the recent reunion of many of my
almost classmates.
As always, I write “Just a
Thought.”

We’ve heard
it before; small
business is the
backbone of
America.
We are still
Henry Cuellar the midst of a
recovery from
the worst economy in history since
the Great Depression and we now
depend more than ever on the
creativity and innovation of people
from all sectors to help the United
States restore its reputation in having
the best economy in the world. That
can only happen if we help existing
small business owners and make it
easier for aspiring entrepreneurs to
open up shop.
Eleven million jobs were sup­
ported by trade in the United States
in 2013. In Texas, a total of 40,737
companies were dependent on ex­
ports -- 93 percent of which were
small businesses with 500 or fewer
employees. Small business created
and sustains a modern and vibrant
Texas.
As a former small business own­
er, I know the feeling one gets when
you have a great idea for a service
or a product. With the right drive,
planning and support, you may be
able to turn a small investment into
something grand and fulfill your
own American dream.
The federal government should
do all it can to facilitate business
startup and expansion, not stifle
it with red tape and bureaucracy.
America was founded on the dreams
of people who had limited funds, but
great visions. That is why I support
small business owners and advocate

owners become established. It’s no
secret that when business thrives, so
do our communities.

court’s misguided ruling will be
overturned on the merits. The U.S.
Supreme Court has already ruled
that voter ID laws are a legal and
sensible way to protect the integ­
rity of elections,” Lauren Bean, a
spokeswoman for Attorney Gen­
eral Greg Abbott said.
Abbott has long spoken against
voter fraud, most recently in a
debate against Sen. Wendy Davis,
where he argued, “Voter fraud is
real and the voter IDs is the only
way to stop it.”
However, recent court evidence
found only two cases of in-person
voter fraud among more than 62
million votes in Texas elections
since 2000.
“This falls in line with the
historic disenfranchisement in
Texas. First you had to be an
Anglo to vote. Then you had to
be able to read and write, pay a
poll tax; now you have to present
a specific photo ID with your ex­
act name on it,” Manuel Medina,
chairman for the Bexar County
Democratic Party said.

Local program works to prevent childhood diabetes and obesity

Fifteen 3- and 4-year-old chil­
dren at Tynan Early Childhood
Education Center are seated at a
table in their classroom ready to
eat lunch in a “family-style din­
ing” setting, meaning they will
serve themselves from today’s
menu of fish nuggets, macaroni,
mixed vegetables and milk.
Ginger Mullaney, project man­
ager with the Social and Health
Research Center (SAHRC), asks
them: “Who has carrots on their
plate?” “What color are carrots?”
“Are they hot or cold?” and “What
are carrots good for?”
“It allows us to see if they
comprehend what fruits and veg­
etables are,” Mullaney later ex­
plains. “We’re incorporating
what they’re already learning
and also helping them build their
vocabulary.”
Even more important, these
15 children, or rather 260 total at
Tynan, are part of a pilot program
called the Preschool and Parent
Health Project (PPHP), funded
by a $750,000 grant from the
University Health System for
three years. The PPHP is designed
to prevent diabetes and obesity
in preschoolers because of San
Antonio’s rising diabetes rate in
kids, most notably in children liv­
ing in households within or near
poverty levels.
“We work to improve the nutri­
tion, physical activity and health
education in 3- and 4-year-olds
to reduce their risk of developing
Type 2 diabetes,” said Dr. Roberto
Treviño, director of the SAHRC,
which oversees the pilot project.
“We really need to get parents
involved in their child’s health
education, so we’ll be doing home
visits and phone calls.”
The project, he adds, is also
part of the Eastside Promise
Neighborhood to improve educa­
tional achievement and revitaliza­
tion of the community. “There’s a
lot of high poverty in this area,”
Treviño said. “We want to bring in
resources through evidence-based
health education materials and
curriculum.”
The curriculum is based on the
successful Bienestar/NEEMA co­
ordinated school health program
created by the SAHRC 18 years
ago. It has been implemented in
27 school districts reaching more
than 600,000 school children. Bi­
enestar has been recognized by the
Agency for Healthcare Research
and the National Cancer Institute
for decreasing obesity and glucose
levels, as well as increasing fitness
levels and fiber intake in elemen­
tary and middle school children.
“This is our first experience
with 3- and 4-year-olds,” Treviño
said. “Health behaviors are being
conditioned from uterus to age 5,
so we need to catch them early.”
The curriculum works with
PE teachers, health educators,
food service workers and parents
to help achieve student goals.

magical instruction manual for
kids. As a working mother, I can
attest that parenting isn’t easy. I
suppose I’m not an expert, she’s
only six, but having a first
grader is a little easier than
having a newborn. Every
stage of her development
has proven to be both mi­
raculous and challenging.
Being responsible for an­
other life is tough, but I have
a great support system in my
life that helps. My parents and
siblings are who I turn to when
I have a question or even when
I need to take a break. My hus­
band is also the glue that keeps
everything together for me, both
professionally and personally.
I’ve also learned that it’s nice
to have other people outside of
family to talk to about everyday
parenting struggles and suc­
cesses.
New and experienced parents
often need someone to talk to
and someone to let them know
their worries are normal. Having
a warm and caring person to help
encourage you to be the best
parent you can be is like having
a life coach. At The Children’s
Shelter these life coaches come
in the form of Parent Educators.
In 2012, we launched the iParent
SA program to support parents
of any age with children ages
0-17 years old. The purpose
of the program is to provide
services that fit a parent’s need.
Parents meet with a Parent Edu­
cator to complete an intake and
parents can choose from five
service tracks. Service tracks
include home visitation or group
classes. We also have services
that last as short as 10 weeks to
as long as two years.
iParent SA pairs a caregiver
with a Parent Educator who is
trained in providing parent edu­
cation, case management, and
support. Most of the services are
provided in the home or in an
alternate location depending on
the caregiver request. Home vis­
its are about 1 to 1 ½ hours and
provided weekly, bi-weekly, or
monthly depending on the need.
Parent educators assist families
with accessing resources and
support to include food, utility
assistance, and housing. In ad­
dition, we invite families once
a month to our Family Fun
Night, where families have the
opportunity to meet other
families with children. iPa­
rent SA is open to families
of any income and best of
all free.
In addition to providing
parent education, iParent
SA offers relief (respite)
services and a 24/7 crisis
line. Relief care can be utilized
by caregivers when faced with
a crisis or needing to take a
break to alleviate extreme stress.
Relief is offered for a couple of
hours to overnight depending on
need. We provide fun and safe
care for children at our location
or a partnering child care center.

idea is that they will be having

Food service workers serve
family-style meals, so that chil­
dren can serve themselves and
will be encouraged to eat more
fruits and vegetables. And parents
will receive home visits and be
screened for hypertension and
diabetes.
“We find these young parents,
20 to 25, with high blood sugars
and high blood pressure, and that
behavior is emulated at home,”
the director said. “The purpose is
to make parents conscious about
improving health and nutrition
at home.”
Preschool children will have
their height, weight and body
mass index tested at the begin­
ning of the school year and again
in May. Objectives are to reduce
children’s obesity rates by 10 per­
cent, increase physical activity in

steps by 10 percent and increase
dietary fiber intake in grams by
10 percent.
“Diabetes and obesity is easier
to prevent than fix,” Treviño said.

ing prevent Type 2 diabetes and
obesity in 3- and 4-year-olds par­
ticipating in the program.
“This program is needed to
assist out student population
because not only will it give the

Lacey Lucio, quien a sus tres años
de edad disfruta de ir a su chequeo
dental cada seis meses.
Según su madre, Leticia Lucio,
Lacey ha visitado la Clínica Dental
Pediátrica Ricardo Salinas, ubicada
en el oeste de la ciudad, desde que
tenía 18 meses y siempre ha tenido
una experiencia positiva.
“Todo el personal siempre es muy
amable y a Lacey le encanta venir a
la clínica”, comentó su madre. “No
es como yo que siempre estaba
nerviosa antes de ir al dentista”.
Aparte de contar con un equipo
amable, la clínica es asequible y
conveniente para los residentes
del oeste de la ciudad, algo que la
familia Lucio aprecia.
De hecho, la clínica es la única en
la ciudad que cobra dependiendo del

was infectious, and Rosa couldn’t
help but smile, too.
“There is a very good chance
we won’t be home for Halloween,
so the fact that the hospital hosts
a celebration for the kids means
so much to me,” Rosa said.
In partnership with the Spirit
Of Halloween stores, an annual
tradition has begun at the hospi­
tal. The stores donate costumes,
treats and host a party for the
young patients who won’t be
able to go home to celebrate the
holiday.
Many patients were filled with

wigs.
Things have been hard for
Rosa, a mother of eight, but she
remains positive, as well as her
son.
“Roberto gets so excited see­
ing all this stuff,” Rosa said. “It
makes him happy. It makes me
happy. It feels good.”
Since August, Roberto has
been doing better, and the doctors
say he is going to get through the
cancer. Rosa is convinced that the
love and support she and Roberto
receive from the hospital has
something to do with his speedy
recovery.
“That amount of support they

have given us here is so astound­
ing,” Rosa said. “The staff has so
much love and caring here. It’s a
support system.”
Roberto has become somewhat
of a celebrity at the hospital.
His smile is infectious, and staff
know him by name. Roberto is so
loved, that the Ninja Turtles, Bat­
man, and even San Antonio Spurs
player Danny Green have come
by his room for a surprise visits.
“We went from him not mak­
ing it, to him getting much better,
and I think a lot of that has to
do with the amount of love and
enthusiasm the hospital gives,”
Rosa said.

The Texas Rangers hired Jeff Banister
as their next manager. The Houston native spent 29 seasons involved with the
Pittsburgh Pirates organization, in which
he held various roles. The Rangers were
67-95 this season, and finished last in the
AL West for the first time since 2007.
San Antonio Spurs D-League affiliate the Austin Toros have been
renamed the Austin Spurs. SWBC has
been named the first-ever presenting

NASCAR honra al ingeniero veracruzano Eddie Troconis

Por ser de gran importancia la
tradicional celebración Mes de
la Herencia Hispana, el circuito
NASCAR presenta a los lectores
de La Prensa de San Antonio la
segunda de una serie de preguntas y
respuestas a hispanos involucrados
en la extensa industria de las carreras
automovilísticas.
En esta edición se enfoca en la
persona de Eddie Troconis, quien
es el ingeniero en jefe del taller
Kyle Busch Motorsport y equipo
del popular piloto Kyle Busch, que
se encuentra compitiendo en la
tradicional NASCAR Nationwide
Series 2014.
Pregunta: ¿Cómo te llamas, que
edad tienes y a que te dedicas?
Respuesta: Mi nombre es
Eddie Troconis, tengo 35 años de
edad y trabajo para los equipos de
NASCAR. Actualmente soy el
ingeniero de carreras en el taller
Kyle Busch Motorsports.
P: ¿Dónde naciste y qué es lo que
más te gusta de tu ciudad?
R: Nací en Tuxpán, Veracruz
(México) un pueblo pequeño. La
ciudad más grande alrededor es
Veracruz, la capital del estado, pero
la verdad es que me crié en México,
Distrito Federal (D.F.) y ahí es a lo
que yo llamó “My Home Town,
Mexico City”.
Lo que más me gusta de Veracruz
es su folclor con todo su sabor, como
La Parroquia y Malecón. Del D.F.,
pues todo, ya que es la ciudad más
grande del mundo.
P: ¿Cuándo llegaste a la
NASCAR?
R: Fue el 2005 y en el 2006
cuando la Busch Series, que es
ahora la Nationwide, fue a correr
a México, en ese entonces conocí
lo que era la serie NASCAR y
nos pusimos en contacto con los
equipos. Yo contraté con un equipo
como piloto para manejar los “road
courses” como México y Watkins
Glen con equipos pequeños. Y de
ahí me fui un día a un pueblito en
Kentucky, que es donde el equipo
se localizaba. Llegué con un par de
maletas, nunca pensé que me fuera a
quedar. Era ir por un mes a conocer
todo y al final se alargó de un mes,
a siete meses. De ahí al siguiente
año salieron ofertas de trabajo y
decidí quedarme. Así empezó un
proyecto que ni yo lo tenía pensado,
ni lo esperaba, ni mucho menos lo
planeé. Yo me había ido de mi casa
con dos maletas pensando que iba a
una carrera y terminé haciendo una
carrera y una vida aquí en Estados
Unidos con la Serie NASCAR.
P: ¿Entonces tú eres piloto e
ingeniero?
R: Fue piloto hasta el 2006. De
ahí, obviamente por presupuesto
me di cuenta que no era lo mío.
Entonces surgieron ofertas para
quedarme a trabajar como mecánico
a partir de ese momento se me dio
la oportunidad de ascender. Como
todos, desde los equipos pequeños,
aunque yo tenía título de ingeniero
y más conocimiento, tuve que
empezar desde abajo como limpia
coches, mecánico, aprender los
“settings”, todas las mañas y de ahí
fui subiendo hasta que en el 2007 fui
el Jefe de Autos de Brad Keselowski
en la Nationwide Series.
P: ¿Cuál es tu recuerdo favorito
de la NASCAR?
R: Han sido varios, uno de ellos
cuando uno de los equipos grandes
como el del piloto Kevin Harvick
Team, finalmente me hablaron
para contratarme y ofrecerme el
puesto de Jefe de Ingenieros, siendo
donde logré ayudar a lo que para mí
fue la primera victoria en la pista
de Atlanta en las camionetas con
Kevin Harvick. Al siguiente año,
que fue el 2011, fue ganar mi primer
campeonato de las camionetas con
la No.2 de Kevin Harvick.
P: ¿Qué es lo que más te gusta de
la NASCAR o del automovilismo
en general?
R: Lo que más me llamó la
atención de la NASCAR, cuando
cambie mi carrera de México de
los fórmulas a la serie NASCAR,
fue el nivel de competencia y la
cantidad de personas y elementos
que son necesarios para elaborar
un equipo de carreras. Y luego lo
fascinante que es que cada fin de
semana estás en diferentes plazas
corriendo, entonces todo se vuelve
una gran familia. Todos en el garaje
son como una gran familia y eso me
recuerda mucho a las tradiciones
de México, de que uno siempre
se mantiene en contacto con toda
la familia y la familia es grande.
Para mí la NASCAR es una gran
familia. Todos son amigos y todos
conocidos. Aunque hemos tenido
nuestros altercados, pero aún así
seguimos siendo una gran familia.
Todos nos apoyamos y todos nos
damos la mano.
P: ¿Cuál es tu pista favorita y
por qué?
R: Son muchísimas. Una,
impresionante es el ovalo de Bristol,
cualquier persona que nunca haya
ido a Bristol tiene que ir. Es el
último coliseo, la construcción
es impresionante, el sonido, la
velocidad y el peralte que tiene.
Dos, sería Watkins Glen, el “road
course” más famoso, porque además
tuve la fortuna de manejar y correr
en la Busch Series y la última, lo
más nuevo, es que nunca habíamos
corrido en una pista de tierra,
famosísimo ahora, Eldora, nuevo
para nosotros y o haya ido, la dos
Watson Glen más famoso favorito
y tuve la fortuna de ganar este año
con la camioneta No.2.
P: ¿Hay algo especial o único que
haces antes de las carreras? ¿Quizá
Tom Rowe: “Rampage arrancó fuerte”

Con dos victorias consecutivas
ante los visitantes Wild y Barons en
su apertura de la temporada 201415 de la American Hockey League
(AHL), el equipo Rampage, bajo
la dirección del entrenador en
jefe Tom Rowe, arrancó fuerte
y superó el comienzo de las dos
últimas campañas, sumando a su
récord 9 victorias por 4 derrotas
en partidos de apertura.

R: En verdad no. Porque la
verdad ni tiempo hay porque al estar
en la Nationwide y en las Trucks
solo tengo un par de semanas libres,
aunque algo que podríamos llamar
pasatiempo es que disfruto mucho
viajar cada fin de semana y conocer
las ciudades que visitamos, ir a los
restaurantes o ciudades cercanas
a las pistas para conocer un poco.
Entonces, el pasatiempo sería ese,
manejar y conocer.
P: ¿Cuál es tu canción favorita en
este momento?
R: Como todo mundo, me gustan
las canciones favoritas de siempre y
las de ahora que escuchas mucho.
Una canción que escucho ahora
cuando estoy de malas o tengo
muchas presiones es una nueva de
Capital Cities que se titula “One
More Minute”, que me calma y me
pone un poquito más tranquilo. La
he escuchado mucho este año (y
como no si es un tema relajante y
romántico, que ya casi le pega a los
dos millones de visitas cibernéticas
gratis).
P: ¿Cuál es tu película favorita?
R:…la verdad, pero cualquier
comedia. Me la paso viendo
programas comediantes porque me
causan risa. Trato de usar el tiempo
libre para reír, disfrutar y despejar la
mente del trabajo.
P: ¿Háblanos sobre el nivel de
competencia en las diferentes series
automovilísticas en las que has
participado? ¿Cómo compararías el
nivel y la intensidad?
R: La competitividad fue lo
más que me llamó la atención
al venir a hacer este serial. La
verdad es impresionante ver que
de los 43 vehículos, al menos 30
o 35 van corriendo dentro del
mismo segundo o hay veces que
los primeros 10 están dentro de la
misma décima de segundo. Y todo
es porque las pistas son muy básicas
a pesar de que existen muchos
reglamentos están muy lineales.
Por ejemplo, la Fórmula 1 puede
ser muy competitiva y es muy difícil
andar adelante, pero se requiere de
muchísimo dinero. En cambio en la
NASCAR, aunque sí cuesta mucho
dinero, yo creo que facilita mucho
más para los trabajos y con equipo
preparado y sencillo puedes andar
muy bien y ser competente. Es el
diseño de los coches, las pistas,
los reglamentos que la hacen tan
competitiva.
P: ¿Qué consejo le darías a
jóvenes a quienes les interesa la
NASCAR o el automovilismo pero
no saben cómo comenzar?
R: Muchos alumnos se acercan
a la escuela de la NASCAR con
sede en Mooresville, Carolina del
Norte, y se desalientan porque no
tienen experiencia en cualquier
nivel de carreras y se regresan a
casa, entonces lo que yo les digo
es que si de verdad tienen pasión
por el automovilismo, no esperen
que al día siguiente les den un
trabajo en Hendrick o Gibbs o los
equipos primarios. La verdad es

of the San Antonio community’s
most innovative leaders.
On Tuesday, Oct. 14, the
Hispanic Chamber of Commerce held its Fifth Annual
Women’s Awards Luncheon:
Making a Mark on the World,
in the Omni Hotel’s ballroom.
The event recognized eight
women who make an impact in
the community.
Those honored were: Mayor
Ivy Taylor (Norma Martinez
Lozano Leadership Award);
Rosa Santana from Integrated
Human Captial (Patricia Pilego
Sout Entrepreneur Award);
Donna C. Normandin from
Frost Bank (Maria Elena Torralva-Alonso Community Voice
Award); Cecilia Elizondo Herrera from The Cisneros Center
(Hope Andrade Legacy Award);
Martha Tijerina from Catholic Television of San Antonio
(Barbara Gentry Innovation
Award); Dr. Harriett D. Romo
from UTSA (Gisela Girard Innovation Award); Sylvia Rodriguez
from Valero Energy Co. (Norma

Lee, compared each woman to a
form of art before they accepted their
award. Each woman honored paid
homage to the woman in which the
award was named after and touched
on the female influence of the honorees in there respected fields of work.
“When I walk in the halls, I see
that 60 percent of our students are
female, and I see a little bit of myself
in them,” Dr. Maria Hernandez Fer-
rier said, referring to Texas A&M
San Antonio during her acceptance
speech. “We are there for them the
way others were there for me when
I was their age.”
According to a report by the New
York Times in April, since 1979
working-age women with a full-time
job has increased more than 12 percent. The Times also reported that
for mothers that number is over 15
percent. The advances women have
achieved in education, participation,
health, and other areas, over the past
50 years continue to grow, especially amongst Latinas. Statistics show
that Latinas in the United States will
increase from 16.4 percent today to
25.7 percent in 2050.
“These women have proven
to be both impressive and inspiring,” Hispanic Chamber of Commerce President and CEO Ramiro
Cavazos said in a news release.
“They represent a dynamic, passionate group of female icons

The closing prayer was conducted by resident Msgr. Tom
Murphy, who previously served

The service began with a wel-
come by J. Michel Belz, president
and CEO of Catholic Life Insurance, who also served as on Casa
de Padres Board of Directors.
Belz also chaired the committee
that helped to raise funds for the
residence 25 years ago.

US archbishop urges both
sides to cool down at Vatican

After two days of fighting between happy liberals and angry
conservatives, the Vatican on
Wednesday (Oct. 15) dispatched
a leading moderate from the U.S.
church to tell both sides to temper
their expectations about impending changes in church doctrine.
Archbishop Joseph Kurtz of
Louisville, Ky., president of the
U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, stressed that a working document on family issues released on
Monday (Oct. 13) is simply that
— a draft document still subject
to amendment by about 200 bishops and lay delegates meeting at
Vatican City.
Monday’s midpoint report from
the two-week Synod on the Family raised expectations that the
Catholic Church was poised to
revolutionize its teaching on homosexuality, divorce and cohabitation, saying gays and lesbians
have “gifts and qualities” to offer
the church.
On Wednesday, Kurtz, flanked
by Spanish Cardinal Lluis Martinez Sistach and Italian Arch-
bishop Rino Fisichella, urged
both sides to take a breath.
“The working document is an
important moment, but it is a
moment,” Kurtz told journalists.
“It’s at the surface of the synod
discussion. I see the synod as a
process. My focus is going to be
on the document that will be the
fruitfulness of the whole process
and that includes our amendments.”
Kurtz was vague on what kind
of changes the bishops may or
may not approve by the time they
head home this weekend. The
synod is just a kickoff to a followup summit in October 2015.
Even so, both sides continued
to maneuver for and against
changes that have been called
nothing short of an “earthquake.”
Conservatives led by American
Cardinal Raymond Burke and
German Cardinal Gerhard Mueller have been leading a strenuous
pushback.
Cardinal George Pell, a conservative who is one of Pope Francis’
closest advisers, told The Tablet
he thought the document was
“tendentious and incomplete.” He
said it needed to be “enhanced and
corrected.”
Meanwhile, liberal German
Cardinal Walter Kasper appeared
to inflame the debate after telling Catholic agency Zenit that
a “growing majority” of synod
delegates support allowing Communion for Catholics who divorce and remarry without an
annulment.
“I hoped there would be some
opening and I think the majority
is in favor,” Kasper told Zenit.
“That is the impression I have,
but there is no vote. But I think
some opening would be left [to
happen]. Perhaps it would also be
left to the next part of the synod.”
New York Cardinal Timothy
Dolan told CBS This Morning
the synod would find common
ground that would satisfy hardliners, including Burke.
“All of this is almost like antipasto to help the Holy Father
arrive in a fresh new way to teach
the timeless teachings of the
church on marriage and family.”

Lea Thompson, periodista y reportera gráfica, celebró el éxito de

El Concilio No. 2 de LULAC
presentó en Neiman Marcus (La
Cantera) un elegante desfile de
modas a beneficio del programa
de becas de esta institución que
anualmente distribuye entre estudiantes de high school más de
200 mil dólares de becas para
educación superior.
Los fondos colectados son el
producto de la campaña de capital
que realiza el Rey Feo y la Reina
de la Feria de Las Flores. Quienes
ocupan estos cargos y dedican una
gran parte de su tiempo en visitar
escuelas y, sobre todo, solicitar
fondos que son distribuidos entre
alumnos que requieren cierta
ayuda para continuar estudios
superiores.

Pumpkin pastries for every palate

As we approach the Thanksgiving Holiday, there is one thing that
comes to mind: pumpkin season.
Expect to see it in all things from
candles, coffee, pastries and everything in between.
Seizing the opportunity, I have
compiled a list of a few notable
pumpkin spice flavored delicacies
around the town.
Bill Miller’s Bar-B-Q: No
pumpkin treat list can be complete
without this staple. Bill Miller’s has
us spoiled with the notion that we
have access to pumpkin pie any
given day. (Within the season, of
course.) On that note, looking for
a ready-to-eat, in stock pumpkin
pie isn’t as easy as it sounds; at
least this early in the season. Locals
anticipate the coming of this festive
treat months prior. Be aware, it sells
out fast so you must go early to nab
a slice. Don’t forget the whipped
cream.
Bird Bakery: Like I said before,
prepared pumpkin pie isn’t something easy to find. Most bakeries
require you call in advance and
make a special order. Not Bird
Bakery. Located on 5912 Broadway
in Alamo Heights, you can get a
personal-sized pie, or a whole pie.
It’s a very natural flavor, not overtly
sweet. The filling of the pie is a little
drier as well. The crust is soft and
crumbly. This is a perfect pie for
those that prefer a subtler taste. The
place has other treats, and they are
all good.
Another treat from Bird Bakery is
the Pumpkin Cupcake. Okay, okay.
These are some of the tasty pumpkin treats you can find around San Antonio to get your pumpkin

It’s not pie. It is, however, cute and
delicious, to boot. Just looking at it
tempted me to buy it. Biting into it
was even better. The frosting is light
and fluffy and not unlike a cloud.
The cake part is warm and nutty,
with a hint of clove. (Actually, the
stem was a clove). It was so cute, I
regretted biting into it. The flavor
quickly changed my mind.
La Panaderia: This bakery is a
little up the road from Bird Bakery
on 8305 Broadway, closer to 410.
Their rendition of pumpkin pie is a
little different. Served in a tiny little
dish, it is adorned with whipped
cream, dark chocolate, nuts and a
sprinkle of cinnamon and nutmeg.
The chocolate really sets it apart
from the standard and is an excellent
alternative for those cocoa lovers.
Here’s one more suggestion,
and a barrio favorite: empanadas.
Before discrediting the idea, hear
me out. These stand out from what
you expect from a typical empanada
de calabaza. Panaderia’s calabaza
empanadas are flaky, and the filling
has kick of citrus, a contrast to the
typical cinnamon.
Kate’s Frosting: I strayed from
pie altogether. But these tiny cupcakes are perfect for those with a
major sweet tooth and are fun to
share with friends. Kate’s features
special seasonal flavors. This time
around, it’s Pumpkin Cheesecake.
Biting into this little cupcake is like
eating three treats at once: cheese-
cake, pie and cake. The cupcakes
are garnished with graham crackers crumbles, and cream cheese
frosting. It’s savory, and the cream
cheese frosting gives it a contrast.
What really seals the deal is the
center. It’s a lighter cream, but it
packs a punch. A fun idea is buying
a half dozen and sharing them with
co-workers or friends.

Síndrome Moscow, rock español en expedición por la Unión Americana

No son moscovitas, son de
Valencia (España). Son jóvenes
músicos queriendo hacerse camino
en el creciente mercado hispano de
Estados Unidos. Son una banda
de rock cuyo más reciente single
“Besos Suicidas” fue censurado
en YouTube (aunque allí está)
porque, vale decirlo, está visualmente cortante para algunos
paladares. La canción habla de
cómo dejamos perder a una persona porque “si no nos supimos
querer es que lo hicimos muy
mal”, dice el coro. Y su anterior
single “Ciudad Esmeralda” es
un homenaje español a la serie
“Breaking Bad”, que incluso fue
mostrado en el NYC Independent Film Festival esta semana.
Solo tres miembros de la
banda, Alex y Ángel y Miguel
vinieron a la gira americana.
Tocaron en Los Ángeles con
famosos en el mundo hispano
como Rata Blanca, Panteón Rococó y Ángeles del Infierno. Y
en Texas, Alex y Ángel hicieron
una parada en San Antonio, antes
de un concierto en Austin, para
contar a La Prensa sobre su esencia como banda y su expedición
musical por tierras en la Unión
Americana.
La Prensa: Debe haber alguna idea por la cual se llamen
de una forma tan particular.
¿Es que sus padres militaron
en el partido comunista?
Alex: No, no, no va por allí
(ríe). Quisimos salirnos un
poco de la seriedad que supone poner el nombre de una
banda, que siempre es algo muy
trascendental, muy serio, con
mucho significado, y decidimos
tomárnoslo un poco a broma,

Tenía mis dudas. Estaba estresada y no sabía si irme a meter
a una haunted house después de
un pesado jueves de trabajo era
la mejor manera de relajarme.
Pero bueno, 13th Floor en Commerce Street había anunciado que
tendría por primera vez a La Llorona, ese personaje mitológico de
México que llora en el río por sus
hijos ahogados. Todavía le texteé
a una amiga: “Con lo cansada
que me siento al rato me siento
a llorar con ella (y de paso me
desestreso)”.
¿Y vienes solita?, me preguntó
la chica de 13th Floor. “Pues
sí”, así que me ubicaron junto a
una pareja que para mi suerte me
antecedió en ese túnel del terror.
¡Ay! ¿Viste The Texas Chainsaw Massacre? Quedas impregnada, el ruido aserrucha los
oídos, el escalofrío se siente
subir serpenteante por el cuello.
Sigues caminando, algo te pasa
por los pies, está oscuro, no lo
ves, la chica que me antecede
grita, grita y de seguro mete las
uñas en el brazo a su novio (quien
ríe nervioso). Sigues caminando
sinuosamente, está frío. ¿Te gus-
tan las casas viejas? Se va la luz
y sientes que alguien te susurra al
oído, algo cuelga en la esquina y
oyes un ruido filoso. ¡Ay!, pienso
“¡Ya vi demasiadas películas de
terror!”, logro gritar ¡por fin!,
las paredes se cierran a tu paso
¡Como de pesadilla! ¿Quién me
está tomando del pelo, literalmente? Creo que era el instinto
humano de miedo, de querer encontrar a alguien en la oscuridad
(¡de la persona que venía detrás
de mí!). Ay, no un elevador…y
el piso se mueve, y por fin, por
fin, se oye el río y ella que llora,
llora, llora…
Por supuesto, hay muchísimas
más sensaciones en el recorrido

sé lo que es pero no me acuerdo.
LP: ¿Y en qué momento
deciden ser músicos?
Alex: Empezamos la carrera
desde jovencitos. Yo personalmente empecé con 15 o 14 años
siendo autodidacta, cogí mi
primera guitarra y a tocar, tocar
y tocar por mi cuenta, meterme
en bandas, bueno estuve hasta
el año 2011 en una formación
fija, tocando en muchos grupos,
sacando discos, pero me aburrí
y cerré esa formación y abrí esta
nueva.
Angel: Sí, llevamos siendo
músicos desde los 14 y cada
uno con proyectos diferentes
hasta que un día de estos surgió
el amor y nos juntamos y bueno
por fin pudimos llevar a cabo de
realizar nuestro sueño de venir a
Estados Unidos y hacer una gira
de esta envergadura.
LP: ¿No han tocado en México o Latinoamérica todavía?
Alex: No, hicimos una gira
pequeñita por Estados Unidos
como año y medio dos años,
como una gira de clubs, con la
primera intención de probar el
ambiente aquí, un pequeño desembarco, más pequeñita. Nuestra primera gran gira es esta.
LP: ¿Y qué tal les fue en
esa gira?
Alex: Bien, lo que decidió que
decidiéramos probar aquí, porque
vimos una buena respuesta de la
gente, entonces nos dimos cuenta

125 mil dólares para sostener
los diversos programas de tres
importantes instituciones que
integran la columna dorsal de
la cultura, no solo de la ciudad
de San Antonio, sino porque
son benéficas para la cultura regional: San Antonio Symphony
Orquestra, Ballet San Antonio y
Opera San Antonio.
El recientemente inaugurado
Tobin Center for the Performing
Arts sirvió de escenario para la
presentación de los fondos en
una breve ceremonia el martes
pasado, presidida por el Juez
del Condado de Bexar, Nelson
Wolf, y el comisionado Paul
Elizondo, con la asistencia
de representantes de las tres
entidades, cuya existencia dan
carácter a la ciudad de San
Antonio.

died from cerebral damage caused
by lack of oxygen in her blood, a
“predictable complication” during a medical procedure, the New
York Chief Medical Examiner’s
Office announced Thursday.
The popular comedienne, performer and TV host died in New
York on Sept. 4, a week after undergoing a minor throat operation
that required her to be admitted
on an urgent basis to Mount Sinai
Hospital.
According to the medical examiner’s office, Rivers was anesthetized with Propofol - which
was also implicated in the death
of Michael Jackson - during a
procedure to try and repair damage to her vocal cords.
The actress’s personal physician is at the center of the
investigation after supposedly
performing a biopsy on Rivers’
vocal cords for which he did not
have the patient’s signed authorization or the hospital’s permission, several U.S. media outlets
have reported.
The medical examiner’s report, however, does not assign
any negligence in the matter and
calls Rivers’ death a “therapeutic
complication.”
Rivers, 81, got her start in
television in 1965 as a writer for
“The Tonight Show,” obtained
her own TV show - “The Joan
Rivers Show” - in 1993 and in
recent years had hosted “Fashion
Police.”

Feminism, the new F Word

Earlier this week, I had the
pleasure of attending the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce’s annual Women’s Awards Luncheon
where they honored women in
the San Antonio community doing outstanding things. Among
the honorees was of course, our
mayor Ivy Taylor who is the first
African American female to be
the mayor of a large scale city
(San Antonio may seem small but
we’re the seventh largest in the
United States believe it or not).
It seems that the word “feminism” and the meaning behind
it has been in shambles. Just
recently, I stumbled across a
Twitter account called “Females
against Feminism” which is
absolutely ridiculous, but sadly
has made valid points. Recently,
it has seemed that feminism has
been border line misandristic like
girls saying things such as, “Just
sitting around drinking men’s
tears out of a coffee cup.”
It’s one thing to exude confidence, because every human
being should, but statements
like that are condescending and
hypocritical. The blurring lines
of misandry and feminism are
creating confusion for young
girls and deriving from the whole
underlying message, equality.
However, being there surrounded by those women being
honored and listening to their
stories made me feel a sense of
pride, not only for the outstanding women being awarded in that
room but for other women that
I’ve had heard about in recent
weeks.
For example, Emma Sulkowicz, a Columbia student who
was raped and instead of waiting around for a trial or letting
the shame of the situation get to
her, she is lugging her mattress
around all around campus with
her until her accused rapist is
expelled. It’s a statement and performing arts piece that has gained
national attention and shed light
onto the entire situation.
Or, the three Irish teenage
school girls that recently won the
global science research competition at the Google Science Fair
2014 in San Francisco with their
research on the effects of the
bacteria diazotroph, an organism that sucks nitrogen from the
atmosphere into the soil, which
speeds up the germination of
cereal crops that is going to help
the global food crisis.
It also got me thinking about
everyday women in our community, and how they should be
proud of their accomplishments.
With that being said, there are a
few events going on this month
that are girl power driven.
Mujeres Mercados has two
events this month, unfortunately
the first was Oct. 18 but there will
be another on Oct. 25 from 3 p.m.
– 11 p.m. at Main Plaza. Mujeres
Mercados is a marketplace of
lovely ladies who will be selling
many crafts, art and homemade
drinks and even on hand healers.
The Sweet Peach Collective
is a community of very talented women identified as artists
who come together to create art
shows. The last one of the year is
Nov. 1 and is Dia de los Muertos
themed at the Highwire starting
at 6 p.m.
And last but certainly not
least, artist Isabel Castro and
other ladies have come together
to present St. Sucia, a zine dedicated to “exposing what it’s like
to be a mujer and dating in a
contemporary society” and is accepting submissions that can be
sent to [email protected] and
a release party is set for Nov. 13
at Hi-Tones.

It has almost been a year since
Xbox One’s release, but in that
time they have managed to slowly
build their all-in-one entertainment
console to be more all-in-one.
When it was launched there were
barely any entertainment apps, it
didn’t read flash drives and it didn’t
stream DLNA content from media
servers. It was pretty bare with
only a handful of apps like Netflix
and YouTube holding up its frail
entertainment skeleton.
But one at a time the updates
that they have rolled out have
added plenty of streaming apps like
Showtime, Encore and Starz and
added little bells and whistles here
and there that have made it a more
rounded out system.
The October update has finally
given Xbox One gamers some of the
content that was promised at launch,
but better late than never, I guess.
The DLNA update now gives you
the ability to stream movies, photos,
and music from your laptop or entertainment server. This gets Xbox
360 owners one step closer to being
able to remove the dusty console
from their shelves and strictly rely
on their new and much less dusty
Xbox One.

Esmeralda” tiene como una
espina dorsal? ¿Un concepto?
¿Qué géneros?
Alex: Va de todo… nos gusta
que sea un poco variado, y creo
que todo eso hace el contexto de
“Ciudad Esmeralda”, puede ser
un poco un bolero estilo moscovita, luego tenemos baladas,
canciones más de rock, tenemos
un poco de todo, lo que nos sale
a la hora de componer.
LP: ¿Quién compone?
Alex: Generalmente lo compongo todo yo, generalmente
hago yo todas las letras, las músicas, pero somos individualistas a
la hora de componer… las grabo
en un pequeño estudio que tengo
en casa, las maqueto, y luego nos
juntamos un poco para ver qué
parte puede funcionar mejor con
la batería, el bajo, los arreglos,
pero en general no somos una
banda de juntarnos todos para
componer.
LP: Ustedes le ponen bastante énfasis a los videos…
“Ciudad Esmeralda” está impregnado con la atmósfera de
“Breaking Bad”…
Alex: Nos gusta mucho trabajar los videos como se trabajaba
en los ochenta, que parecía es
haciendo una pequeña película,
que lo que hacía es que quisieras
ver en qué terminaba el vídeo.
Hoy en día creo que se ha perdido
la magia de los vídeos, porque
es una banda tocando y sabes
que vale, y a lo mejor que los
componentes son muy guapos
pero sabes que nada va a pasar al
final más que acaba la canción,
entonces a nosotros no nos importa salir, de hecho en el video
“Ciudad Esmeralda” salimos
muy poquito, pero no le damos
importancia, porque creemos que
debe predominar la historia de la
canción y que la gente se sienta
enganchada a esos 3 o 4 minutos
de película que hemos creado.
LP: ¿Y en el de “Besos Suicidas”?
Alex: Es el más reciente, pero
realmente se grabó antes que
“Ciudad Esmeralda”, ese se grabó
en la primera gira que hicimos
en Estados Unidos. Quisimos
aprovechar la oportunidad de
estar en Los Ángeles, y estando
en Los Ángeles ¿cómo no vamos
a grabar un video? Entonces
vamos a grabarlo, y luego se
utilizó como segundo single, lo
hemos tenido como año y medio
guardado como un secreto y lo
acabamos de sacar.
LP: En YouTube hay una
versión censurada ¿Es verdad
o no es verdad?
Alex: Sí, sí, YouTube censuró
el video. Nosotros lo subimos y
apenas en un día teníamos 40 mil
visitas, y entonces YouTube nos
lo quitó y lo dejó por allí y ahora
hemos vuelto con él….
LP: Es que aquí en Estados
Unidos los parámetros para
televisión y video son diferentes
que en Europa.
Alex: Pero es chocante porque
en el mismo YouTube hay cosas
más fuertes.

content without a cable or satellite
subscription.

- toward online video subscriptions
prompted HBO’s decision.
“It’s time to remove the barriers to
those that want HBO,” CEO Richard
Plepler said Wednesday during a
meeting with investors in parent
company Time Warner, highlighting
the incipient market of households
that have high-speed Internet but no
cable or satellite TV subscription.
An estimated 10 million U.S.
households fit that description and
access their entertainment content
online.
“That is a large and growing opportunity that should no longer be
left untapped ... so, in 2015, we will
launch a stand-alone, over-the-top,
HBO service in the United States,”
Plepler said.

are 80 million homes in that country
that do not have HBO, adding that

Te voy a contar mi historia que
creo les va a parecer increíble.
Soy una mujer sola en mis sesentas. Tengo una hija de un
matrimonio que no duró nada.
Ahora ella está casada y tiene dos
niños. Mi hija y su familia se vino
a vivir conmigo a la casa que me
dejó mi madre. Yo le puse la casa
a su nombre y al de su esposo
ya que si vivíamos juntos, pensé
que era lo mejor en caso de que
algo me pasara. Pues Nina, quiero que sepas que hemos tenido
muchos problemas. Mi hija tiene
un trabajo de 12 horas al día y mi
yerno tiene un dizque trabajo de
6 horas al día, cuatro días a la semana. Yo trabajo y él se encarga
de cuidar a los niños. Hace poco
decidieron comprar una casa más
grande en una subdivisión cara
y pues como yo vivía con ellos,
yo ayudaba con los pagos de la
casa. Mi hija sigue trabajando
mucho y él trabaja poco por lo
que él cuida a los niños. Lo que
a mí no me gusta es que él les
grita mucho y les pega. En una de
esas yo me enojé porque le estaba
pegando al niño más chiquito
y resulta que me dijo que si no
me gustaba que la puerta estaba
muy ancha. ¿Crees que me estaba
corriendo de mi propia casa?
Yo me aguanté para no hacer el
problema más grande, pero cuando le dije que iba a reportarlo
con Child Protective Services,
me dijo que tomara mis cosas y
que me fuera de la casa. Lo peor
de todo es que mi hija estuvo de
acuerdo y ella también me quiere
fuera de la casa. Nina ¡ésa era
mi casa, cómo es posible que me
corran! Pues lo hicieron. Ahora
yo vivo en un departamento,
pero lo que me preocupa ahora
es que esos niños se quedaron a
la merced de ese mal hombre que
tiene manipulada a mi hija. ¿Qué
hago? ¿Los reporto o me quedo
callada? Espero tu respuesta.

No puedo creer lo que me dices. ¿Cómo es posible que hayas
puesto tu casa a nombre de tu hija
y de su marido? ¡Eso no se hace!
¿Por qué no pensaste que esto te
podía pasar? Ya no hay remedio
para tu situación. Ellos se quedaron en tu casa y tú te quedaste en
la calle. Yo te recomendaría que
hablaras a Child Protective Services, porque si no lo haces, tal
vez muy pronto ocurra una desgracia. La verdad es que no sé ni
que más decirte, porque todavía
no lo puedo creer. En cuanto a
tu hija, pobrecita. Está ciega y
cuando abra los ojos va a ser demasiado tarde. Tú cumpliste con
tu hija y hasta te pasaste. Sólo me
da tristeza que tu hija va a pagar
lo que hizo y tal vez el mismo
marido sea quien la haga pagar. O
si no, cuando esos niños crezcan,
de seguro que la van a botar y la
van a dejar en la calle. No se lo
deseo, pero todo en esta vida se
paga. Encomiéndate a Dios y que
todo te salga bien...
