Foundation “Juan de la Cosa”
The Foundation for Research and Development in Latin America and Europe “Juan de la Cosa” (FIDALE) is a private non-profit
institution registered in Spain and Mexico, that seeks to to promote economic and social development by stimulating international
cooperation among institutions, social organizations, and the governments of sovereign states and subnational administrative units.
Since its founding in 2004, FIDALE has actively sponsored international conferences and academic exchanges on a series of vital
questions regarding economic and social issues in Latin America, and has been a pioneer in promoting direct forms of international
cooperation between local governments in Spain, Mexico and other countries in the region.
Objectives of the Foundation
The Foundation “Juan de la Cosa” carries out activities related to the following general objectives:





Promoting the creation and diffusion of knowledge and mutual understanding among governments and institutions in Latin
America and Europe, as well as improving the channels of cooperation between their respective public and private
institutions.
Developing permanent forums for the analysis and debate of economic, social, political and democratic issues of mutual
concern, to create bridges between the scientific and academic communities of both continents.
Advancing joint projects between public and private institutions and social organizations in Latin America and Europe
engaged in or promoting specific research and development initiatives.
Encouraging and supporting liaisons and exchanges between academic institutions in both continents.
Supporting the elaboration of methods to monitor and guarantee the appropriate use of European funding in development
projects in Latin America.

Fundación para la Investigación y el Desarrollo de América Latina y Europa “Juan de la Cosa”. Juan de la Cosa was a Spanish
navigator and cartographer who produced the first map including both Europe and the newly discovered American territories. He
was also the owner and captain of the Santa María, one of the ships that accompanied Christopher Columbus on his first two
voyages to the West Indies.
